When we think of minor characters of a story we think that they aren’t important or contribute anything towards the development of the plot. We usually think of them as background extras or unrelated plot to make the story longer, however that's not the case, minor characters are very important in advancing the theme or plot. They can have a major impact as in changing how the main character feels or act, or develop the story even further. Even if they don’t have a tremendous effect to the main character or story. Minor character plays certain roles to bring the story together. In this essay I will show three examples of minor characters in three different stories. The first minor character I am going to introduce is Mrs.Alexander from “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” by Haddon. Mrs.Alexander is Christopher’s (main character) neighbor. An old lady who offers snacks to Christopher and chats with him. She is an important minor character in the story because in Chapter 97 Mrs.Alexander confesses to Christopher that his mother wasn’t really dead and she was with Mr.Shears. The minor character Mrs.Alexander is important because she reveals that Christopher's mom isn’t really dead. Later on …show more content…
The minor character, Dr.Watson also plays a huge role in the story. Dr.Watson is the sidekick of Sherlock Holmes, who spends most of his time in trying to solve a difficult case for his master. Dr.Watson is a necessary character in advancing the plot. He is the narrator of our story and tells us everything from his point of view because if the story was written in Holmes point of view the story would be very hard to understand. For instance, Holmes sees the tiny details and the big picture at the same time, he doesn’t think nor act like other people so therefore the story would be very difficult to follow. Dr.Watson is pretty much the middle man between society and Holmes
The minor characters lay the basis of the book by supporting the main characters throughout their activities. The minor characters that undoubtedly progress the book are Scythe Faraday, High Blade Xenocrates, and Scythe Volta. Scythe Faraday is pragmatic and compassionate. He never forgets about the feelings of others. Furthermore, he also is a realist doing whatever is expected of him even if it is arduous for him. High Blade Xenocrates has more of a weak personality. He is constantly being convinced into doing things that hurt him or the society. Though he is the High Blade, or leader, of all of the Scythes he is most like a follower (130). He is influential to the story because he, being blackmailed, lets many bad things happen to

In a novel, minor characters are never the focus of the plot. Minor characters are present in a novel to affect the major characters and help the character development of the major characters. Minor characters influence the major characters in many ways. One of these ways of supporting the major characters, is the victimization of the minor characters. Two excellent examples of minor characters that impact the major characters of the novels due to the minor characters being victimized is Nacha in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel and Monica in Silence by Shusaku Endo.
The minor characters in a story can play such a major role. In the novel, “The Strange Case of Dr .Jekyll and Mr.Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson, the readers are introduced to several minor characters, such as Lanyon, Enfield, Carew, and Poole, who help advance the plot. Hastie Lanyon was an old friend of Jekyll who wrote a letter to Utterson about what he witnessed, Richard Enfield told the story of the door , Sir Danvers Carew was murdered by Hyde, and Poole was Jekyll’s butler who got Utterson for help. These minor characters play a major role in the plot.
‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ by Mark Haddon efficiently presents an internal unique view of a person with a disability, also the complexity of human emotions and relationships. Also, the effective demonstration of Christopher’s complicated everyday life results from his lack of understanding human emotions and social conditions. This is comparable to the challenging distinct disagreements between Christopher’s family members because of his behavioural problems. Haddon effectively highlights Christopher's disability throughout the first person murder mystery novel, which is also revealed in the language and structure of the book. The distinctive ideas present diverse concepts throughout the novel that relates to Christopher’s
