Did you know the crusades were primary caused by political / economic gain? The Crusades were a series of eight Christian military journey fought against Muslims for the Holy Lands between the years of 1096 and 1270 C.E. I personally think that The Crusades were primarily caused by political / economic gain but other people might argue that they were primarily caused by religious devotion because people say that it was because of documents. The crusades were primarily caused by political and economic gain, rather than religious devotion because they have desire for more power and more opportunities for trade. The crusades were primarily caused by political and economic gain. There was a desire for more power. There was a desire for more power because you would have more luxuries and have more than you ever did. A quote from document 4 states, “Now God has reserved the merit of its recovery for one house, the house of the sons of Ayyub {Saladin's family}” This helps support the desire for power because it is explaining that Saladin want so bad to rule Jerusalem. Another quote is from …show more content…
There was more opportunities in trade. There were more opportunities in trade because someone would want something get it, it would spread and more people would want the same thing but they would raise the prices and people would get mad about it. A map from document 5 shows that Jerusalem was one of the major trading cities, they traded things like cloth, wine, soap, horses, sliver, and metalware. All of those items were sold to people/cities in Asia. A quote from document 6 is “When crusaders returned to Europe, they brought back such things as silk, sugar, and spices.” I used thing quote because it is explaining that jerusalem wanted more and more luxuries. The crusades were primarily caused by political and economic gain, rather than religious devotion because they have more opportunities for
Another aspect that contributes to the statement that the crusades were not motivated by religious factors is that the crusaders wanted more land. Many Crusaders wanted to govern their own piece of land in a new area, so they decided to fight being guaranteed a piece of land; in this era land equaled money, the more land you had, the wealthier you were—religion didn’t get you very far. By having a new plot of land, in a new area the Crusaders would be able to rise above their social status and experience a newfound wealth that would be next to impossible back in their homeland. Through this, we can see the prime motivation of the Western European’s commencement of the crusades was their aspiration for land. Even Pope Urban II, an example and leader for all the people, wanted to fight just to get the Holy Land back. So if the prime example for the people, a leader that everyone looked up to was demonstrating greed and voracity then it would only be natural for his people to follow. Not only did Pope Urban II and officials express tremendous amounts of self-indulgence, but they very well knew what was going on beforehand; the selection mentions that they worked to “prepare” the people for a crusade by changing conditions within their society and economy. The changing of economic aspects portray that the Crusaders were unhappy with their current state of wealth and the easiest way to fix that was to
The Crusades took place in the Middle East between 1095 and 1291. They were used to gain a leg up on trading, have more land to show hegemony, and to please the gods. Based upon the documents, the Crusades between 1095 and 1291 were caused primarily by religious devotion rather than by the desire for economic and political gain.
There were numerous motives for the purpose of the Crusades, such as religious, economical and commercial, and territorial reasons.
The main objective of the first crusade was overcome by a secondary objective which later became the reason why we call it the First Crusade. The initial objective was to respond to the Byzantine Emperor who requested western volunteers to help fight against invading Turks. In The reconquest of jerusalem and the holy land soon became the main objective of the Crusade. Pope Urban in 1095 called upon his people telling them to go jerusalem and liberate the church of God out of devotion and not for honor and wealth. Calling the crusade increased the popes standings in a papacy which was struggling at the time due to the investiture controversy. During this time, religion was very important and people took it very seriously. Jerusalem was the
Around the late eleventh through thirteenth centuries there were nine wars that were and are called the Crusades. The Crusades had positive and negative effects on the people that were involved. If you have ever heard about the Crusades? If so what do you think? Did you know that the Christians left religious hatred when, they did not defeat the Crusades.
The Crusades had some religious hatred behind them. They would sometimes turn their fury against Jews. They had an economy that was built up to be better. Some Crusaders attracted people by the adventures, estates, and commercial opportunities. They had a negative impact on the 4th crusade, because they sacked the city and destroyed it.
It was a war to recover the Holy Land power, land, boost up social status' and obtain great amount of money. Source 15 and 16 prove the point of the crusaders wanting treasure and gold. Source 15 is a painting that demonstrates when the crusaders were rampaging through the city. It was thought that the crusaders were only coming to execute the Muslims and take back the Holy Land but instead they were looting the gold stealing the Muslims treasures and possessions. Source 16 is also another source that displays about how the crusaders only came to take the riches of the Holy Land, but why did they steal the gold weren’t they supposed to just kill all the Muslims and free the Holy Land.
I agree that the Crusades were the best mistake in history. The Crusades involved several groups of Christians trying to conquer the holy lands at Palestine from the Muslims. As these groups of people were traveling to Palestine they met and interacted with people who were different from themselves. These dealings with Muslims allowed European Christians to learn about Aristotle's works, "Arabic" numerals, and techniques of paper production. Since Arabic numerals came from India and Muslims learned paper production from China, Europeans are finally being involved in cultural diffusion. Crusaders also were introduced to luxury goods, such as sugarcane, on their way to Palestine. Once western Europeans had a taste of these luxury goods they were
During the time of the Crusades land was considered of much value and symbolized power. More land someone owned the more powerful that person became. Pope Urban called the first Crusades because it was an opportunity to gain control of the holy land of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is located next to seas and waterways making it perfect for trade. The map shows Jerusalem located next to the Mediterranean Sea. (document 7) Gaining control of lands near waterways meant more money gained from trade. This would boost economy. According to Chronicles of Fulcher of Chartres “for those who were poor there, here God makes rich. Those who had few coins, here possess countless besants...who had not had a villa, here, by the gift of God, already possess a city.” (Chronicles of Fulcher of Chartres, document 3) The people in the East were blessed with riches and land. According to the Jewish chronicler, Solomon bar Samson “...Frenchmen and Germans...passed through the towns where Jews dwelled…” (Jewish chronicler, Solomon bar Samson, document 5) The Christians passed through many different lands on their way to Jerusalem. This was an opportunity to conquer the people of the foreign lands and take their money. Easy way to increase their economy. This motivated the Crusaders to keep on
Root of the crusades in November the pop presented a spell in France it was a call to princes, knights and Clarks to wedge the war of the Catholic Church. Tens and thousands of men and women family’s and cities has joined the pope urban’s crusade. Pope urban told people that the crusades is a ticket to heaven. Many of the people believed that the crusade is a spiritual war and going to clear their soul of sins, the religion is what drove them. The Pope’s sermon pushed Cristian’s teaching in his war. Many had the power to by blessing ignore the sixth commandment thou shall not kill. They wanted soldiers to fight but to be rewarded instead of going to hell and suffer in the afterlife. In the year of 1096 after a whole year of the pope sermon armies from France, Germany, and Italy went out to meet Cristian’s from Muslim rule the fight for Jerusalem.
Religious factors in the first crusade were significant and can be argued as a reason for the campaign’s success. However, it is more down to a combination of different factors to why it was so successful, when compared to the later more unsuccessful Crusades. The time of the First Crusade, medieval Europe was a place of hardship, with frequent famine and plagues with many wanting to escape the idea of normal life. With the start of the First Crusade many responded with extreme enthusiasm and it really highlighted the religious hysteria in Europe at the time. What was to follow was a campaign built upon the foundations of Christianity, which would lead to the persecution of another religion and the deaths of thousands of Muslims, Jews and Christians alike. Religious factors are the reason for the success of the Crusade and can be seen to be the reasons for continuous successes throughout the campaign.
" The Crusades were more then just a war, it was a world changing event that lead to the recovers of many ancient texts, lead to the golden age of prosperity, and it tested the power of the Church. Men went on Crusades for many reasons such as pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the fear of the ongoing spread of Islam, and protection of the Holy Land. For all of those reasons to fight Christian men were united and fought
The main goal of the First Crusade was just to assist Emperor Alexios and his struggling empire, as already discussed, the motives were a promised place in heaven and all sins forgiven. To many people it was just seen as a bonus that accompanied their dreams of fame and fortune, as at the time Europe was struggling economically and thinning out the population meant more to go around. And as time went on, religious piety motives began to slowly die off, however the Crusades were going stronger than ever, therefore proving religious devotion played an inferior role to the other reasons
he Crusades was not a rational movement that could easily be explained purely because of it economical or territorial ambition, neither would it be explained due to a clashing or rights and interests. Both the Christians and Muslims were fueled by myths and passions that were far more effective in getting people to act than any political matter would. And so the years of war have followed. The main spark to this prodigious war was when Emperor Alexis I of the Byzantine Empire requested assistance to Christian nations in order to defend its capital city of
Most people think about the Crusades, they probably think about the Europeans winning, kind of a righteous war, for Christianity. The word Crusade literately means to “take up the cross”. Were the Crusades really wars for faith, or were they wars to get land, money and power? Many examples from the crusades have pointed out the atrocities that the crusaders and Muslims committed are against their religion, such as the Christian commandment “Thou shall not kill’, or the fact that Islam is based on defending and not attacking but their whole empire was based on conquest.
