At the beginning of the year, I was uncomfortable. I felt like I would not be able to learn as much because of the different environment I was faced with. Little did I know it would be the complete opposite; I would end up learning more than I ever had before in a traditional English class. I was a little uneasy about the classroom setup, rolly chairs usually formed in a circle, and typically a student led class. As the year progressed, I realized that the mobility of the chairs and the opportunity to openly participate in class discussions led to me becoming more comfortable in the classroom and also led to me learning more about how to become a better reader, writer, and thinker. I accepted the challenge of learning in a unique environment. …show more content…
He truly tries to be comfortable in what he understands to be right in an environment that is uncomfortable with his opinions. Although while other people may have doubted Proctor’s decisions and the reasons behind them, Proctor kept making the decisions he felt were correct. Proctor understands what is actually happening within their society and why people are confessing, so he calls them out for this when conversing with Hale. “And why not, if they must hang for denyin’ it? There are them that will swear to anything before they’ll hang; have you never thought of that?” (Miller 69). John Proctor is saying that because the threat of death relies on whether those accused confess or not, many people in Salem will confess to being a witch and being associated with the devil for the sole purpose of saving their own lives. Although Proctor falters once and succumbs to what the people of Salem want him to believe, he ends up dying for what he believes him. John Proctor stays comfortable with what he conceives to be true and morally correct in a society that does not share the same views as him. As Proctor understands that he must die in order to do what is right, he says, “You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs.” John Proctor is saying that although he made a mistake in agreeing to confess to working with the devil, he realizes that him dying for what he believes is much more prideful than living knowing that he confessed to something he sees as morally incorrect. Proctor sticking with his gut and making decisions that he deems right and appropriate and dying for the decisions he makes show that he values doing what is honorable and being comfortable with those decisions even if others around you do not share the
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a rich and enticing play set in the late 1600’s describing the epic horrors and emotions through the events of the Salem witch trials. The Crucible, focuses primarily on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. The play begins with the discovery of several young girls and an African American slave, Tituba, in the woods just outside of Salem, dancing and pretending to conjure spirits. The Puritans of Salem stood for complete religious intolerance and stressed the need to follow the ways of the bible literally without exception. The actions of the women in

The Crucible is a complex and intriguing novel with events, characters and themes comparable to almost every period of human history. It is common for humans to fear change and what is unknown, in the play The Crucible this is witchcraft and the devil, in more recent times it can be seen in post World War Two and Cold War United States, through McCarthyism. The themes in the crucible are as important to people in the 21st century as in Salem in 1692. These include justice, reputation, hysteria, intolerance and empowerment. All of these are common themes throughout human history. The characters in The Crucible are also important to people of the 21st century as they can teach us a little bit about people around us and their reactions when
In 1952 a play was written by Arthur Miller, about events that happened in Salem in 1692. The play was about affairs, accusations, and innocent people being accused of witches. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail and Mary Warren are introduced as two separate people. Although people might see Abigail and Mary Warren as two separate people and nothing alike, they are more alike than meet's the eye. Abigail and Mary Warren have three things in common; they are both are deceitful, they both dishonest, and they are both apprehensive.
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” ( Dr. Seuss) “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” (Psalm 23:4) “God has given you one face, and you make yourself another.” (William Shakespeare) These quotes, found throughout many different time periods of history, all say the same: “Be who you are and don’t let anything change that.” These are great words to live by, but, in time of weakness, does one stay true? Can even the good be twisted? This is a theme that is represented throughout The Crucible many times. Characters such as Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor, and Reverend Hale had good intentions
The Crucible was a very emotional book in terms of plot. The plot was about a girl named Abigail who accuses many people of witchcraft. She also accuses Elizabeth Proctor, wife of John Proctor. Abigail uses her power of the court to get to her obsession, John Proctor, by trying to eliminate Elizabeth. She is unsuccessful in getting this done and ends up executing over twelve people including John Proctor. It is great to see all the different kinds of characterization and themes. This story really gets you thinking about many things, such as, lying and telling the truth, or most importantly, standing up for your beliefs even if you have to die for them. It also shows how envy, greed, hate, and jealousy can impact
As Vladimir Lenin once stated, “A lie told often enough becomes truth.” This quote indicates that if you constantly repeat a lie, eventually people will come to believe it. I definitely agree with Lenin. A lie won’t stay a secret forever. Lenin’s quote remains true and evident in Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible. There are many characters Miller uses to prove this quote true through the literary elements Characterization, Theme, and Setting. Some characters include Abigail, John Proctor, and Thomas Putnam.
The Crucible presents itself as one of the most controversial books of all time, seeing as its written by a man who got not just accused of communism, but asked by the FBI to change one of his screenplays because he got wrapped up the ‘witch hunt’ of his time. This books written not only to convey the messages and important lesson from the Salem Trials, but to also draw parallels to the modern events in the lives of the audience. Arthur Miller came up with the richly significant name of his book by sampling bits from linguistic, scientific, and biblical definitions of the word “crucible.”
Over 200 accused, and 19 hanged--that is the number of people that were wrongly accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials between 1692 and 1693. These numbers are extremely outmatched when compared to the Red Scare of 1951, but the circumstances were almost identical. In both instances, figures devoured the fear of the common people and began bringing it close to home. In 1692, the people of Salem feared sin and wrong-doing. When the first young girls showed any signs of acting different than what is considered normal for their puritan society, they were automatically accused of witchcraft.
During humanity’s darkest hours, human nature had an evident impact on events such as the Holocaust and in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, fueling the fires of hatred and spite. One of humanity’s darkest times was known as the Holocaust, a mass genocide of 6 million citizens of Jewish denomination orchestrated by the insensitive Adolf Hitler. Hitler had used the habits of humans to manipulate his way into power to then use it to enact his anti-semitic views. Reflecting back on history, the nature/actions of humanity during the Holocaust share a multitude of correlations with the critically acclaimed play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller. Abigail leads hundreds to the gallows similar
In the play the crucible there a few central ideas that I would like to bring up. One, is how much hatred there was in the story. Two, is how many lies were told in the play. Three, is how people accused each other when they didn't even do it.

Set way back in the Salem Witch Trials, The Crucible tells the story of young, accused witches and their plot to clear their names. Court trials are held often in order to find who is guilty of witchcraft, and Deputy Governor Danforth is the man that oversees these trials and determines who shall be hanged. This story is one of unfairness and ruining lives, somewhat reflecting that of times such as the Cold War and Great Depression. Many people are hung for activities that they did not undertake, and it is quickly revealed that these people of high power, such as Danforth, will do anything to stay in their highest power.
Throughout history authors have made a connection between the lives of people in communities and their literary works. Authors intend to make their works relatable to the reader, either by historical events, or personal events that people can relate to their personal lives. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a literary work that is based off of historical events, just with a few extra details make it more compelling to readers. The Crucible is based off of the Salem Witch Trials, which occurred during the 1600s. Most literature works, including The Crucible, can teach many life lessons similar to the way songs can teach many life lessons. In The Crucible, John Proctor’s affair with Abigail Williams plays a role in the events that takes place within the community and his home during the Salem Witch Trials. Modern day musical selections parallels the events that took place within The Crucible.
What is my “crucible”? I feel like everyone has gone through something in their life that has affected them in some kind of way, whether it was good or bad. I have had quite a few “severe trials”, but I will only be writing about two of them. These experiences have shaped me into the person I am today. They have helped me build a stronger mettle. Life is a kludge, and I truly believe everything happens for a reason. You may not understand why something is happening in your life, but it all makes sense sooner or later.
