The main objective of Dying to Get High, a book written by Richard J. Webbs and Wendy Chapkins, is to spread awareness of the benefits of medical marijuana. A major topic of this book is WAMM, Wo/Men’s alliance for Medical Marijuana, which is a group that encourages the use of medical marijuana for ill patients who are eligible. They primarily argue that these patients could benefit from the therapeutic effects of medical marijuana, yet it is considered illegal according to the law. Throughout this book, several stories are told by patients themselves, court cases are depicted, and battles are fought for the legalization of medical marijuana.

The debate on Medical marijuana has been a controversial subject mainly because people have an abundance of opinions and very little scientific research to back up either side of the debate. For example, "opponents of medical marijuana argue that it is too dangerous to use, lacks FDA-approval, and that various legal drugs make marijuana use unnecessary," ("Should Marijuana Be a Medical Option?"). There are, however, more reasonable and intelligent arguments in favor of the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The argument
Marijuana, this plant brings up a lot of controversy. After the legalization of medical marijuana in California, it seems like the legalization is the biggest topic up for debate. Around the world, there are people are against it and many who strongly support the legalization. Personally, I am for the use of medical marijuana. Cannabis has been used for over 12,000 years for many purposes such as food, clothing, and to treat disease and relieve symptoms. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus had one of the earliest descriptions, writing of the Scythians inhaling vapors of hemp seeds, rendering them to a transported state (Herodotus and Rawlinson, G.). Cannabis is also the plant known as marijuana and has been illegal since the 1930s. “Before World War II, marijuana was listed as a medicine in the nation’s Pharmacopeia (Noonan, D.).” “Medical marijuana refers to treating a disease or symptom with the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts (“Is Marijuana Medicine?”).” Since 1970 it has been classified as a serious drug without medical benefits. However, there are different forms of marijuana that shows promise as a useful drug. Research has shown that some forms of the plant have relieved pain and nausea for cancer patients and HIV and AIDS sufferers. More recently, treatment properties of medical marijuana are getting attention for treating seizures and cancer tumors. But the reputation of marijuana as an illicit drug and its status under the law make it controversial and difficult for doctors to prescribe.

In October 2009, I was diagnosed with Prolactinoma and was told that the treatment would cause infertility. He was 1lb 4ozs. The medics arrived and could not find a pulse. They deemed him deceased, they placed his tiny body in a bag, but Riley took a gasp of breath and started to move. The staff of Southern Regional were pivotal to Riley’s survival. He was in the NICU for 101 long days, that is where I had the pleasure of meeting Andre, Daketa and little Miss Zoey as they briefly shared a room with Riley. During our NICU days, Riley experienced daily seizures but with God we defied all odds. On December 14th weighing 4lbs, 7ozs, Riley was given the green light to come home! Riley’s premature birth had unfortunate consequences. His lungs were under-developed requiring him to need an oxygen tank. The longevity of the use of the tank affected the development of Riley’s eyesight. He was formally diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy at about 13
