My favorite dance was the contemporary routine with Derek, Jaja, and Alexia. The choreographer, Stacey Tookey, explained that the piece was about bravery in different forms: Derek played a veteran, Jaja was portraying a woman leaving an abusive relationship, and Alexia took on the role of a single mother. I really enjoyed the dance because of the story it was trying to convey; each dancer dove into character and brought out complex emotions through their movements. The dancers connected deeply with each of their stories, even though they were completely different people. They were portraying things that they had never personally experienced in their lives before. They showed the strengths of the characters along with their weaknesses, they …show more content…
They were all realistic and to the point. Derek was dressed in a military uniform, Jaja was in a nightgown, and Alexia wore a dress. Each outfit defined the character and set the mood for each of their roles in the dance. The costumes exemplified the performance instead of taking away from it. They were not matching or coordinated so each character had their own individual part in the piece. The dancers did not seem uncomfortable in their clothing, not even Derek who was clad in a veteran suit. They utilized their costumes in the dance. None of the dancers had distracting makeup or hair in the performance, the entire dance was focused on the movements and …show more content…
I believe that the routine was not well put together. A necessary component in the piece was an overly cocky, in-your-face attitude. The piece was set to “Whuteva” by Remy Ma, which reflects this attitude. The dancers however, did not deliver. They weren’t exuding the confidence that the piece demanded from them and because of this, the music overshadowed the performers. I also disliked this piece because of the costumes. Keeping in mind that this piece was supposed to have a loud, aggressive vibe to it, the costumes did not portray that for me. Instead, they were sloppy and distracting. They also got in the way of some of the steps, such as when the dancers had to put their arms up in the air; their hoodies were flying all over the place. At some points in the piece, some of the dancers visibly push up their sleeves or adjust their clothing. The costumes did not elevate the performance, they were a poor choice and detracted from the
Some of the movements executed by the dancers are similar to those executed by dancers in a stepping performance and also in a tap dance presentation. This presentation falls into the group of the new trends of modern dance, in which the choreographer are taking more and more liberty with various dance combinations, and including strong messages in their work. I would definitely attend other dance performance, not only from this company, but also by other companies; and would also recommend this performance, especially to people going through a dark period in their life. This performance finished convincing me that dance is surely the most communicative of the art forms, and that a single presentation can convey more than one
I think that costume was interesting and strongly related to the music and the type of dance that he is doing, but I think if the tie was on him, would make the dance more interesting. On the other dance, the two dancers were wearing also formal clothes and the costume showed how they were lovers. I think the suit that they were wearing helped the story and the feeling to be reached to the audience. Lastly, Breakfast Burrito, the costume for this dance was different for every dancer, where every dancer had his different color costume and there was nobody wearing a suit. A dynamic dance like this one needs to have a mix of bright colors to make it more interesting. In my point of view, the costumes for this dance was amazing.
Overall I actually enjoyed the piece more than I thought I would. It had a nice tempo that allowed listeners to be engaged and even when the volume dropped the violins played a softer texture as if they were inviting you to listen closer and pay more attention. Generally, the theme was also joyful which I took notice of and enjoyed. Lastly, I didn’t notice any musical mistakes, and thought the piece was well played.
This was particularly exciting because the music was written and sung by Beyonce, a majority favorite. However, the costumes lacked coordination and seemed put together very last minute. Although, the purple and red vests did match the lighting which added a unique touch. The dance moves were fun and upbeat which allowed for the audience to enjoy themselves and experience the joy the dancers expressed. The dance truly attempted and succeeded at displaying the true spirit of Beyonce. Also, the dance moves seemed to have been carefully planned out to their fullest potential. The originality of the dance was exceptional which was one of the many components that cultivated its excellent
Dance is defined by Webster as “moving rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps”. However, it can also be used to sway an audience’s judgment or exhibit feelings and emotions that cannot be conveyed by the usage of verbal language. When watching a show, I would like to be able to get something out of it and with this it brought childhood memories and rung my old tomboy ways and made me realize not only is it okay to sometimes still have those tomboyish habits but also to see you don’t always have to be an adult and take everything in life seriously. During this performance two of my favorite pieces were 909 Lamentations and On the surface. I felt as if these were two of the strongest pieces throughout the whole performance.
We went to see this last evening (opening night for this program) and were blown away. Never having seen anything on the program before, I didn't know what to expect, but each piece was magnificent. Stanton Welch's "Tu Tu" seems to me to be a kind of personal love song to ballet. The opening and overall structure reminded me of Ashton's "Sinfonietta" with a very energetic first movement followed by a stunningly beautiful slow movement and then a fast and again more lighthearted finale. It was the second movement that amazed me the most. A solo ballerina slowly emerges from darkness and seems to reflect on her career as a ballerina with tenderness and sadness. The mood of this piece was masterfully created. It was beautifully and
These distinction sections were noticeable because of changes in energy levels and changes in the tempo of the music. To me this also represents the different periods we may go through in life. Our emotions, circumstances, and relationships are constantly changing as we go throughout our lives. Change is unfortunately inevitable. The theatrical elements such as the music, lighting, and costumes helped add to the serious aesthetic. One recurring them I noticed was how the dancers held hands at various points within the dance, and this represents unity and necessity of having a support system.
I liked the dance piece because the dancers were limited physically in their bodies, but their dancing was beyond limited and astounding. At first, I was a bit doubtful and sceptical before watching the dance because I thought the dancers were going to perform with very minimal and stiff movements. But to my surprise, the dancers moved gracefully on stage. The two dancers used quite a lot of space. The dancers used all levels of space from low to high. For example, the dancers executed amazing leaps, jumps and lifts in their performance that represented as high levels of space. The dancers movements were grand; however, they were also whimsical, sharp, circular, and clean. The dancers utilized most parts of the stage. The pattern of the space that performers used was more curved than linear. There were two dancers in this piece, the male dancer that had only one leg and the female dancer that had only one arm. The genre of dance that was performed was a ballet; though, in my observations the dance seemed to be more contemporary than ballet. For instance, the tempo of the dance was slower and had less rhythm than most classical ballets I’ve observed. Also, there were a couple of pauses and rests during the performance. The dance
In my opinion, the strongest part of the choreography was the snow scene. It was my favorite scene out of the whole performance for various reasons. The snow scene was obviously intended to be elegant, and I believe that their choreography for this part definitely showed elegance. One specific part of the choreography that they pulled off in this scene was the lifts done by the snow
The performance took place at the Harris Theatre. The whole point of Dancestry is to express dance through the ages and historically important tributes to dance. When watching this I was captivated at first. The atmosphere was set entirely in sync with the opening performance. The music built at the right moments, the lighting and effects were phenomenal as well as the costume. I found the dance itself very intriguing, because I had never seen someone dance so elegantly with such an oversized dress. The performer made it looks so effortless and simply beautiful. As it progressed I found myself getting bored with all the repetitiveness included in the dance. The beautiful flowing dress, the smoke, the lights, the experience that was new and exciting for me was
The costumes chosen for the performance were appropriate, but not well conveyed in a lot of ways. The idea of them were great, they just were not conveyed as well as I believe they could have been. When I think of restoration costumes, I imagine large puffy wigs, extensive puffy dresses and clothing, lots of extravagant hats, and
The music sounded spirited and enhanced the theme of the dance. The music was played well with the dance. The lighting was focused on the rocking chair and the dancers. It was not too dark and the lights did not overpower the dancers. The costumes did contribute to the piece and were not manipulated during this particular dance. The rocking chair was the main prop and it completed the focus of the dance. The makeup and hair design was appropriate for the dance with the black masks and black costumes. If you understand the story of the song that the artist wrote, it falls into place with the black and spooky theme and costumes presented in this
During the performance I lost interest in the beginning, but what really brought me back into the performance was the music. It was bold and beautiful at the same time. The singing was well done and the actress who played Electra, Elizabeth Blancke-Biggs sang throughout almost the entire performance which was impressive. In this performance it was clear that the objective was to highlight the music. This could be seen as rational, because a regular opera goer is expected to be wowed by the music. However, does that justify why the performance allowed the visual elements to fall so
Character was a huge element in the musical. It told the stories of many different individuals that all came together for the same passion of dance. One character that stood out to me and I loved, was Valerie Clark. She is hilariously vulgar and incredibly talented. She sings “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three”, which discloses her continuous struggles of being unsuccessful at numerous auditions, and how her dance skills were astonishing, but her looks were what was keeping her from making it. She then decides to get plastic surgery, which later leads to opportunities starting to come in.
There wasn’t a lot of props which I thought was a great idea, seeing that too many props couple draw the attention away from the characters. The play had it’s really dark moments, like when Salieri first came on he seems very depressed and angry. My thoughts on Salieri is that he seemed very bitter and insane but the actor playing Salieri really brought this character to life. He never lost my attention and seemed very live throughout the entire scene. All the characters did an amazing job and the costumes really set the time frame. I just have one question, did the men in those times really wear a lot of
