The Confederate Flag

In the New York Times article, “Take Down the Confederate Flag, Symbol of Hatred”, Governor Nikki Haley has called to remove the confederate flag from the state capitol grounds. It has become a controversial topic in the past few weeks. Many people are calling for it to be removed since the incident at Charleston African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Nine people were killed in a church in south Carolina. The killer a several pictures that showed him with the confederate flag. So the South Carolina government voted to take down the flag.This caused a lot of debate. I believe that the confederate Flag stands for bravery in what you believe in. I think that the government is overreacting with this whole situation.

The confederate flag. This flag has been a part of history for such a long time. So, is it really time to let go of the past and remove it all together? The confederate flag was actually a battle flag carried by rebel soldiers during the civil war so the flag wouldn’t be mistaken for the Union Flag. The removal of this flag is important to us as citizens of the United States because it shows we are finally letting go of the past and moving onto bigger and better things.

That's because the man behind the crime was seen posing in pictures with the flag, which is also viewed by many as promoting racism, rather than Southern history. The debate prompted many industries to stop the sale of merchandise showing the Confederate Flag, including NASCAR.

Confederate heritage organizations used the flag widely in their rituals memorializing and celebrating the Confederacy and its heroes. According to historynet.com “In the decades after the flag fad, the Confederate flag became, as one Southern editor wrote, “confetti in careless hands.” Instead of being used almost exclusively for memorializing the Confederacy and its soldiers, the flag became fodder for beach towels, t-shirts, bikinis, diapers and baubles of every description.” People are misusing the Confederate Flag and forgetting the true meaning of what it stands for when it was back in war times. For decades, there have been disputes over the presence of the Confederate flag over the South Carolina State House. Some felt that the flag represented the tradition and culture of their state, as South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union. However, many others thought it was a symbol of the inhumane treatment of millions of people before the abolishment of slavery. Since slavery was such a struggle for so many people, many others feel that it is strongly offensive. Joe Davidson, author for the Washington Post and the Federal Diary, described the flag as treasonous. The United States Constitution states, “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them” which is what happened during the Civil War.

The South seceded from the Union because of slavery. This flag is what represented the slave states. The Confederate Flag should not be raised because it is a sign of oppression, it is not used anymore, and it shows a sad event in U.S. history. It is quite hard to answer this question, because the confederates have more than one flag. There exists the first confederate flag which is blue with one white star. Next there are two versions of the first confederate national flag. Both with red and white stripes and blue square on top left corner, one with seven stars forming a circle, the other with thirteen stars forming a circle. Then there is the confederate battle flag, which is the one most people have seen, it exhibits a red background with a blue X as well as thirteen stars to compose it. This flag was first brought into battle in December 1861. The war between the Confederate and the Union was fought because the south had wanted to succeed from the north to become its own country.

The Supreme Court said before that flag desecration is protected by the first amendment. This means that flag desecration is free speech. Recently, there’s been a lot of hope for a flag desecration amendment. People want flag desecration to be illegal. While flag desecration is disrespectful, America gives the power to do whatever people want as long as its lawful.

The American South. An area full of rich history and the home to some of the nation’s largest conflicts throughout history, such as the civil war and the civil rights movement. Southerners have always been proud of their heritage despite its rocky parts and display it for all to see with a 150 year old flag. This is proving to be problematic, though, as the Confederate flag they are all so proud of, is really only 50 years old and has been associated with ideals of white supremacy and racism. Some Southerners and other Americans choose to not believe the truth about the flag, others were never taught the truth. However, it is incredibly important in forming an opinion on the flag, and to whether or not the flag must be removed from state buildings. And the truth is, due to its historical affiliation to racist whites in the South, white supremacy groups, and recent events such as the Charleston Shooting, the Confederate rebel flag should not be flown on state buildings as it is not culturally sensitive to African American people who have been targeted by these people.

The Stars and Bars were the first official flag of the Confederacy. Although a striking likeness is shared between this flag and to the Union’s “Stars and Stripes,” the symbols are representations of two nations at war; two very different places and mindsets. The Confederate Stars and Bars were flown from March, 1861, to May, 1863 and throughout that time this flag would gain stars at the same rate that the confederacy gained states into their union, until a final count of thirteen. This was a peaceful reaction I won’t say protest to social changes in our society. Most people think the national anthem represents those who died for our country which is true in fact, but what did they die for? They died for freedom, for the right to either stand or kneel. When we look at the ethical issues about the confederate flag controversy we can look deeper and what some people believe it still stands for. Some southerners see the flag as a symbol of the South’s independence, sign of pride and the brave fight their soldiers died for. When we dig deeper though, the civil war was fought over slavery, a brutal war between states. Choosing what ethical decision to make it is always a good idea to look at social changes. There are always unified alternatives to both sides. The flag can still be represented in museums and homes, but not in public places and government buildings. It was originally designed as a Confederate national flag by William Porcher Miles of South Carolina, rejected by the Confederate Congress, and then adopted by the Confederate army (Clemens, 2016). After the Civil War, the Confederate flag was used to represent Southern Heritage and honor while being in connection with white supremacy. During the mid-twentieth century, the Confederate flag began to show up everywhere in America and sadly through the efforts of the Ku Klux Klan, the flag became more tied to racial violence and intimidation (Clemens, 2016).

As the media began to dig into this homegrown terrorist 's background, they uncovered symbols that he attached his ideologies to. One prominent symbol was the confederate flag. In the immediate following weeks there were calls for America to divest in the confederacy. Big corporations began to pull the confederate flags from their product lines. Cities like Memphis, Tennessee, that changed the name of one of the city 's parks named after Nathan Bedford Forrest—a slave trader/owner and known racist, voted to also remove Forrest 's statue and his and his wife 's remains that lay beneath the statue. Ultimately, South Carolina 's government passed an amendment to retire the confederate flag on state grounds—vowing to 'honor ' the nine lives lost.
