The Confederate Flag Imagine if you were a black person looking at the Confederate Flag a long time ago or even today in 2016. This flag has a huge role of how people see it. The Confederate Flag was used by the southern Confederate States of America. It's what separated the North and the South. The South seceded from the Union because of slavery. This flag is what represented the slave states. The Confederate Flag should not be raised because it is a sign of oppression, it is not used anymore, and it shows a sad event in U.S. history.
The Confederate Flag should not be raised because it is a sign of oppression. Some people might consider it a sign of hate. Everything that made the south secede was because of slavery. Racism drove the Union apart, which tells us that the main problem was the difference. This flag should not be raised because of the meaning behind it. It has the meaning of racism and hatred. A white former Moscot stated, “Rebel man should be dropped because its a symbol that stands for racism and oppression for many people”(Ralph Ells). This statement means that lots of people consider the Confederate Flag a sign of slavery. Racism shall not be in the U.S., therefore the flag

The United States is united once again. There is no use or purpose for this flag . The display of it can harm others, or even motivate others to do sinful stuff. Some people think the flag is a symbol of the south and it's their duty to fly it. It's actually the opposite. It's a symbol for a separate nation, a country away from the U.S. In Mississippi, GOP house speaker Philip Gunn said “It was time for his state to change its flag, which includes the confederate insignia a sign of slave-holding south”(Diamond). It is time to change the flag and bring it down. Slavery is gone and there shouldn’t be anything representing it. This period of time was in the past, and time shouldn’t repeat
The author mentioned that some citizens are still perturbed by the Confederate flag. While the number is slowly waning, many citizens were a part of the civil rights movement. They watched racist people protest against them using the flag as a symbol of racism, oppression, and hatred. To some, the flag may serve as a permanent reminder that racism is not truly dead in America.
“Symbol of a brave past or banner of treason?” Kevin Baker asks this in his article titled That Flag. This is the question that many people have tried to answer. The Confederate Battle Flag has been used to send many different messages to the public, and depending on who you talk to it holds different meanings. As explained in the article titled Political culture, religion, and the Confederate Battle Flag debate in Alabama written by Jonathan I. Leib and Gerald R. Webster. The article explains that, “Many traditional white southerners view the Confederate Battle Flag as emblematic of the sense of duty and sacrifice of their ancestors during the Civil War and Reconstruction. They argue that the Civil War was not about the institution of slavery
We all have heard the romantic story of our flag. How Betsy Ross sat in her living room all night, sewing together the stars and stripes. Today, Betsy’s masterpiece still flies high all around our country, but, in many of the southern states, there is a second flag that flies with it. The Confederate flag. The birth story of this war flag is not romantic in any shape or form. During the Civil War, there was much confusion on the battlefield between the original Confederate flag, “Stars and Bars”, and our “Stars and Stripes”. So the leaders of the Confederates had their Committee on the Flag and Seal create a totally different flag to use for the battlefield, and they would use their original flag for parades. Hence, the birth of the Confederate
The Confederate flag has now become a hot issue for South Carolina, which is the last state to have the original Confederate flag still flying on its Statehouse. What got the State’s attention was the economic boycott of South Carolina that was announced on January 1992 by the NAACP to pressure the State to remove the Confederate flag off of its Statehouse in Columbia. The NAACP’s removal request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage
The Confederate Battle flag is one of the most recognized symbols in the United States. It is not always a welcome symbol in today’s society. Take for instance the state of South Carolina having to remove it from its statehouse on April 12, 2000. The reason it is not always welcome is because people often misinterpret its true meaning. It is not a symbol of hatred but, a symbol of southern pride and honor. The pride and honor of all the men and women who carried it the flag into battle fighting for what they believed in, Southern independence.
The Civil War was the marking of a tragic and racially fueled war between the South and the North battling because the Southern states weren’t willing to conform to the North’s ways. The South instead supported slavery and wanted to uphold the ignorant act. This flag shouldn’t be the representation of the South as it just reminds people of the terrible reason behind the the flag’s original intentions. Neal A. Collins, a Republican from the Southern Carolina House says “I do support removing this Confederate battle flag, as much as I respect it. It’s time for our state to use this opportunity to heal”. Neal adresses how we should allow this change and how removing the flag would in fact help us in the end. The flag would be like a battle scar, a painful reminder of
The Confederate Flag’s meaning can be viewed in many different ways, in fact it already is. The flag has a lot of meaning behind it. Take the design for instance, a lot of the design portrays a lot of the flags meaning. If you take away all the color of the flag and just look at what is left. “There are 13 stars on the flag; these stars represent the 13 original colonies for when the U.S first began. Each one of these colonies had its own system of self government, until the start of the northern aggression. When the northern states began trying to swipe authority over the southern states which this was the main cause of the Civil War in 1861. The blue side ways X is actually lying on top of the stars and the stars are shining though it. The blue X is lying on the stars showing that the southern states no longer want to be a part of the Union.” (Coski, page 20) So basically, the flags message is to cross us out of the Union (us being the South). In my opinion, the rumors made up about the Confederate Flag were most assuredly made by the Northerners to get rid of the South’s flag. I also feel the Southerners should stand strong in keeping their heritage and legacy for their children. The Confederate Flag is something to be proud of as a Southern.
This flag has already caused a lot of trouble, a woman went up the flagpole in front of the South Carolina Statehouse, even before it was removed. And it is thought that the shooting in Charleston Emanuel Church, was provoked by the controversy over the flag that has been living in our community for years. Nevertheless President Obama congratulated Haley and South Carolina on twitter stating “South Carolina takes down the Confederate flag - a signal of good will and healing, and a meaningful step towards a better future.” This may seem irrelevant, but after all President Obama is African American, and this flag had a significant touch of their past. This removal was a another step towards the end of racism in the United
The Civil War was a time of intense hate and destruction in the United States. The Confederate flag is used to pay homage to those that fought in the Civil War for the South. The thirteen stars represent the states that seceded from the Union and founded the Confederacy. These states did not withdraw from the Union due to slavery; they actually seceded because of lack of power and rights. When the Confederate flag is displayed in the correct way, there is nothing wrong with it or the principles that it stands for; however, society today sometimes portrays the flag in the wrong sense. Many people use it as a flag of white supremacy and pro-slavery. The Confederate flag actually means much more. It helps remind the people today of the intense
The confederate flag caused a lot of trouble in the past and it might bring trouble now, It can start a small civil war. The confederate flag was always considered as a racist, hate, and offensive to blacks. After the civil war the south got back with the north but they still treated the black people like slaves in a different way and it is against the Emancipation Proclamation. These are the reasons why the confederate flag should not be flown in the
The KKK or Ku Klux Klan, a group who caused a lot of violence towards colored people, adopted the flag and used it to help represent themselves for a short while. They would carry the flag to represent the slavery aspect, even though the African Americans were already free. Therefore, it gave the flag a name that was against all colored people. Even though, the flag was not originally meant to represent such an issue. The confederate flag, as stated before, was created as a battled flag and has now adopted an entirely new meaning. It’s past should not matter even though it was used for the wrong reasons at one time because it has changed now, and will forever hold a new
History was not my best subject in school, so I am outside my comfort zone talking about the confederate flag but I feel I need to tell ‘my’ truth. Being honest, I’ve learned more about the southern flag now than I did all through my school years, and I was raised in the south. Not that I was wanting to learn, but because there is a social war going on right now regarding the southern battle flag of the south known as the confederate flag. Some people find it offensive while others feel it is a ‘pride’ thing and the opinions are flying more than the flag!
The confederate flag, a topic that has been the center of controversy for many years now, is an emblem of southern pride and heritage to some, while to some it is purely a symbol of hate and racism. After the shootings in South Carolina, it is clear that the flag should be taken down. Since it represents white supremacy and inequality and not Southern pride.
The confederate flag represents slavery. Slavery was one of the United states worst times in history. It was inhumane and people should not have to relive one of the worst times in their heritage. The South was not the only place where it was going on. It was happening in the North too. Just not as bad. The time of Slavery was horrible and it should not be broughten back in memory for those who were affected.
One of the most trending topics in America right now is the Confederate Flag and whether or not it 's racist. 42 percent think the flag represent southern heritage and the other 42 percent think it 's racist and should be taken down. 75 percent believe it 's racist and only one in ten will agree that it is southern heritage. Depending on what region is asked about if it is racist, there are different answers. The Midwest say it is racist and the south, of course, say it 's not racist. A poll showed that African Americans, Democrats, and the highly educated were more likely to perceive the flag negatively. The Confederate States of America came into existence on February 4, 1861. It had six states at first and they were the Deep South. Those states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. After April 1861 four upper south states joined. They were Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. They made they 're own court system and congress. It reflected a lot of the American government. The confederate flag should be taken down because it is a symbol of hate, rebellion and racism.
