Each year in Southern California, the fall is marked by the arrival of the Santa Ana. These winds are described in two different texts, “Brush Fires” by Linda Thomas and “The Santa Ana” by Joan Didion. Both pieces address the relationship between the wind and the community, using rhetorical devices to convey their views. Thomas presents a wind that is essential to nature. Didion, on the other hand, sees the wind as a characteristic Los Angeles, that can sometimes be detrimental. The writers also have contrasting experiences with the fires causes which cause drastic differences in tone, portrayal of the winds, and the overall message within each text.

There are so many horrible effects from fires and most of them affect so many people. Studies have shown that out of all of the different methods to decrease fire damage, prescribed burns are the most affective. Many people would argue that they are not as affective because they cause so many health problems. Although that is a very important view and may seem valid, those health issues are not as extreme as one might think. People should look at the majority of the benefits form prescribed burns and they will see how affective and important they are.

Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” is an excellent example of naturalism, a philosophy in nineteenth-century literature that did not recognize man's ability to control or determine his own life. Man was presented instead as a biological creature who reacts to whatever natural force he experiences. Ironically, Man was not the key figure in describing man’s relationship with nature, but yet his dog is another part of a puzzle in which it provides a direct contrast to man, and plays a pivotal role in not only in humans relationship to nature, but humans instinct to survive with what little known in ahead.

Naturalism was a movement at the beginning of the nineteenth century. According to Mrs. Dodrill’s power point Naturalism “grew from realism and has similarities and factors that characters cannot control (such as heredity, social conditions, instinct, and nature) control their lives.” Not to mention it explores the realm of psycholog and the behavior of humans.
