Women vs. Stereotypes

In the short story “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck a woman named Elisa lives in a male dominate time and seems to be dissatisfied with her life. Elisa and her husband live in the Salinas valley located in California. Elisa spends most of her time working in her chrysanthemums garden. Her husband just struck a good deal and sold a portion of his cattle and wants to take his wife out on a date. As the day goes a man comes to Elisa house asking for directions but he actually had a completely different motive. He was in desperate need of work and didn’t know where his next meal would come from. After there somewhat brief conversation she gives him something to work on and he goes on his way. He uses phrases like “it ain’t” and “I haven’t anything” to not only show the language used in the time period but also the slang that they used during that time period. When Henry says “head” he actually is talking about an individual steer and uses this word instead because it is related closely to what he is actually trying to say. The author also uses personification in the story also to portray how Elisa feels about gardening with her hands. While Elisa is talking about gardening she says "You watch your fingers work. They do it themselves... They know. They never make a mistake" In this statement she makes she is showing her connection with the plants and how your body can automatically work without putting thought into it.
The story has a neutral tone, and really lacks in showing the character's internal
