The Scarlet Pimpernel begins very dark and depressing, with people getting their heads cut off. The reason for this is these aristocrats were considered traitors to France. Tons of people attempted to leave France for England, bringing in the main part of the book- the Scarlet Pimpernel. It is a yellow flower that is used to help French people escape. Sergeant Bibot then is suspicious of a cart for maybe having people in there that are trying to leave. An old driver lies about them leaving and says it's for her grandson having smallpox, this just leaves Sergeant Bibot surprised because he realizes that could be the Scarlet Pimpernel.
The story takes us to a new setting, in Dover. The Comtesse de Tournay is introduced when she arrives with her kids, but her husband is not safe like they are. The Comtesse accuses Lady Blakeney of being the reason an entire family is given up to the Tribunal, and soon after this Lady Blakeney herself arrives in a carriage. Even though the Comtesse refuses to see Lady Blakeney, she arrives on the scene. Lady Blakeney mocks the Comtesse after the Comtesse makes a scene about forbidding her daughter to speak to Lady Blakeney. Percy Blakeney, one of the richest men in England, comes in. Percy is considered dumb and not many understand how he lands such a beautiful woman like Lady Blakeney. Lady Blakeney says bye to her brother Armand as he goes back to fight for the French. She then meets Chauvelin, and he wants to discover who the Scarlet
