In the book, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, the Author makes the point that men are going to achieve their dream over the women in the novel by using Curley and his wife as examples. Curley wanted to become a boxer, so he did. Curley’s wife wanted to become and actress, but the execution of her dream relied on other people. Curley wanted a wife, so he set out to find one. Curley’s wife only married Curley because she couldn’t pursue her dream. Curley didn’t have to work for his position on the ranch because his father is the boss. Steinbeck is saying through the book Of Mice and Men that the American dream during the 1930s was only attainable by men that pursued it, Steinbeck uses the characters of Curley and his wife to prove this point. …show more content…
Candy, when talking about Curley, says that Curley “Done quite a bit in the ring,” (26). And another worker said that Curley “Got in the finals for the Golden Gloves,” (54). Curley wanted to become a boxer, so as a male during the 1930s, he became a boxer and lived his dream for some time before the novel. Curley had to be a good fighter to make it to the Golden Glove finals, so when Curley’s wife was told that she is a good actress she should have been able to become one. Due to the social norms of the 1930s, Curley’s wife could not leave her home to become an actress. Her first attempt was stopped by her mother, who wouldn’t let her leave with a show (88). Her second attempt to leave waited on a letter that never arrived. Curley’s wife had been told twice that she was good at acting, but because she was a woman she had to wait for a man to make her dreams come true. Steinbeck’s use of failed attempts on Mrs. Curley’s dreams shows the reader that as a woman, Curley’s wife couldn’t achieve her dream even if she wanted to. Steinbeck then makes this point clearer when he states that Curley, who was a good fighter, made it all the way to the Golden Gloves finals; Curley’s wife couldn’t leave her
In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, on page, from “Well, he seen this girl in a red dress” to “like he wants to pet them pups all the time” Lennie’s actions show indication of Curley’s wife's death later in the book. By using foreshadowing, it is seen that Curley's wife is responsible for her own death.
In this essay I am going to be assessing the character Curleys Wife from Steinbeck’s book Of Mice And Men. The book is set in the 1930s during the Great Depression it features two farm workers called George and Lennie. The travel around together in search of work sharing a dream of a place of their own, a small ranch where they can live and work for themselves. It tells the story of how violence may erupt to destroy those dreams. Curleys wife is a character in the book who from the brief encounters with her is presented in two ways. Firstly the dangerous, flirtatious character who isn’t trusted by the rest of the ranch workers but then later one we realize how she is just a victim
Candy: He earned this by being a kind “sweet” old man. So the most appropriate thing to call him was candy.
Steinbeck has written ''Of Mice And Men '' about an adventure of George and Lennie trying to accomplish their American dream's during the Great Depression during the 1930's where thousands of people lost their jobs in the Wall Street Crash making them feel hopeless. George and Lennie come to work at a ranch near Soledad in California. There they meet fellow ranch mates and a woman called Curley's Wife. In this essay I will focus on how Curley's Wife's personality and actions change throughout the novella and who she affect her and other bunkmates throughout the novella. In addition to that I would be showing how Steinbeck creates tension by using Curleys Wife.
During the Great Depression, families lost everything as banks crashed and dust swirled over the barren landscape of the Midwest. Parents left their homes and bundled their children and worldly possessions into their cars and headed west to the land of hope in California. In this time, it is difficult to think of groups bonding together, especially as workers compete for limited agricultural jobs on ranches. However, while John Steinbeck’s characters in the novella Of Mice and Men isolate themselves in some ways from the world, they are also interconnected in webs of community throughout their ranch. Curley’s wife, Crooks, George Milton, and Lennie Small are all

- Lord Chesterfield once said, "You must look into people, as well as at them." If you apply this logic to Curley's wife and Crooks in the book, Of Mice and Men, you will find that they are the same in many ways despite their differences in race and sex. These two unfortunate souls live in a world full of shattered dreams, discrimination, and loneliness.
Curley is one of ‘Of Mice and Men’s’ major characters. Although he does not appear to hold a central role, he is very important in other respects. The first of these is the way in which he treats George and Lennie, and the ranch workers in general on the ranch. Curley is the boss’ son. Therefore he acts like he is the boss himself. He orders the others around, and, although it is true that he does hold some power on the ranch, he does not hold any respect from the workers. He is nasty towards them, treating as though they are them below him, and often trying to pick fights.
The fact that Curley’s wife hates her life makes a huge contrast between her bad life and the possibilities associated with the American Dream. This contrast is shown in the line “Coulda’ been in the movies an’ had nice clothes.”(Steinbeck,89) Curley’s wife is presents the epitome of a person striving for the American Dream. She often says things like “I coulda made something of myself….maybe I will yet.”(Steinbeck,88) By Steinbeck using this character, he intended to show the difference between a “fake” yearning for the dream and a true whole-hearted desire for it. Curley’s wife would give anything to be successful in the future. This view is also seen by Kevin Attell who said “ To be sure, it is about dreaming of the future…”(Attell) The opinion from this critic show that this opinion or view is also seen by others who read this book.
Each set of characters presented a new theme to give meaning to the book. Curleys wife presented sexism and how gender played a role in who will get to experience and hold the American Dream. She also gave the awareness of how women were continuously dehumanized and viewed as less than equal to men during that time. Steinbeck was inspired to write Of Mice and Men, from his childhood experiences and observations of immigrants moving from ranch to ranch in search of jobs. This gives a representation of how he believe the American Dream was unattainable. Steinbeck explored the nature and lives of the people during that time and connected that to the characters in the novella which set the stage for the
When Curley and Carlson get into an argument about Curley’s wife, Carlson shows that women aren’t equal. He says, “Why’n’t you tell her to stay the hell home where she belongs” (Steinbeck 61). Later, when talking to Lennie, Curley’s wife says, “Wha’s the matter with me? I don’t know why I can’t talk to you” (Steinbeck 85). The first quote shows that men don’t believe women shouldn’t be equal and that they have one purpose, staying at home. The second quote shows what Curley’s wife’s dream is. She just wants someone to talk to and she wants to be able to go anywhere she wants. But dreams take work, and her dream came to an end because of Lennie. When Curley’s wife went to talk to Lennie, she made the mistake of letting him feel her hair. Lennie froze up when she told him to let go and Lennie only panicked. When it was all over, the book says, “When she didn't answer nor move her bent closely over her. He lifted her arm and let it drop. For a moment he seemed bewildered” (Steinbeck 89). This shows that Curley’s wife’s dream will not be realized because she was killed. But even if she didn't get killed, Carlson’s viewpoint on women wouldn't change. Also, Curley’s wife still wouldn't be able to go places and talk with the guys on the ranch. These facts show that women won't be getting equality for a long time. Therefore, Steinbeck shows that equality is hard to come by, by utilizing the character Curley’s wife, and her dream.
John Steinbeck uses Curley 's wife to portray the woman 's role in the 1930s. Back then, women were treated as property and trophies to their husbands. Women 's insignificance is signified by the fact that Curley 's wife is never given a name. She is always referred to as Curley 's belonging. Additionally, Carlson 's statement about Curley 's wife needing to go back to her place where she belongs characterizes women 's roles by saying that women should be at home performing domestic chores. In essence, women were looked down upon and never seen as equal to the men.
In the period of the 1930s in America there were lots of forms of discrimination: one of them was sexism. Women were not seen as equal to men: they had fewer rights than men, were paid less and most of them were only allowed to take care of domestic chores. In that period of time, women started realizing how submitted they were to men, so they began having ideas on how they could improve their lives and gain more independence. They had their own American Dream.
"The American Dream is that any man or woman, despite of his or her background, can change their circumstances and rise as high as they are willing to work” (Fabrizio Moreira). For many years, men and women struggled to achieve the idealistic life of living on independent terms. Many characters in Of Mice and Men work in order to pursue and achieve the American Dream that consisted of having their own house and income. Characters in the book may use that dream to help the overcome their life struggles and personal problems. Of Mice and Men tells the story of two friends, George and Lennie, who find themselves on a ranch in pursuit of their dreams. Unfortunately for them, circumstances beyond their control cost Lennie and George their dream and much more. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck portrays how dreams create a false sense of hope in order to cover up the realities of life through George, Curley’s wife, and Candy.
Steinbeck's novel 'Of Mice and Men' explores the everyday lives of migrant workers during the Great Depression. In this era, American men were forced to leave their families and become 'drifters'. These were people who didn't have a fixed job and continually moved from place to place.
