Candy: He earned this by being a kind “sweet” old man. So the most appropriate thing to call him was candy.
Curley: On the surface Curley is called Curley because his hair is curly. on a deeper level his nickname was also a description of his personality. Curly didn't have good control with his anger and he would lash out unpredictably, like a curl.
Curley’s wife: She is called Curley's wife because she is Curley's wife. Rather than being treated as a wife of someone she was treated as an object of Curley's, hence not having a name in the story but Curley’s wife.
Crooks: Crooks earned his name on the ranch by having a crooked back from being kicked by a horse. His name also represents his place in the ranch. Crooks was a proud man “A person
In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, on page, from “Well, he seen this girl in a red dress” to “like he wants to pet them pups all the time” Lennie’s actions show indication of Curley’s wife's death later in the book. By using foreshadowing, it is seen that Curley's wife is responsible for her own death.
In this essay I am going to be assessing the character Curleys Wife from Steinbeck’s book Of Mice And Men. The book is set in the 1930s during the Great Depression it features two farm workers called George and Lennie. The travel around together in search of work sharing a dream of a place of their own, a small ranch where they can live and work for themselves. It tells the story of how violence may erupt to destroy those dreams. Curleys wife is a character in the book who from the brief encounters with her is presented in two ways. Firstly the dangerous, flirtatious character who isn’t trusted by the rest of the ranch workers but then later one we realize how she is just a victim
In the book and in the second movie Curley's wife was not given a name. She was not given a name to symbolize that she was nothing more than a possession of Curley. Curley's wife was given a name in the first movie. Her name was May. I think that the first movie we watched best depicted her because of the way she dressed.
Although people associate respect with “respect your elders” or “respect the people who care for you”, this story implied that respect should be earned rather than just given. People who want or have to be respected have to do the same to receive it. In this story, people used nicknames as an act of respect or disrespect. This shows the character’s motivation which is to point out their good qualities or their insecurities. “‘Well, Squeaky,’ he says, checking my name off the list and handing me number seven and two pins.
During the Great Depression, families lost everything as banks crashed and dust swirled over the barren landscape of the Midwest. Parents left their homes and bundled their children and worldly possessions into their cars and headed west to the land of hope in California. In this time, it is difficult to think of groups bonding together, especially as workers compete for limited agricultural jobs on ranches. However, while John Steinbeck’s characters in the novella Of Mice and Men isolate themselves in some ways from the world, they are also interconnected in webs of community throughout their ranch. Curley’s wife, Crooks, George Milton, and Lennie Small are all
(87). The wife of Curley does not get called by her first name because she is known as Curley’s property. She most likely acts the way she does because she does not have
- Lord Chesterfield once said, "You must look into people, as well as at them." If you apply this logic to Curley's wife and Crooks in the book, Of Mice and Men, you will find that they are the same in many ways despite their differences in race and sex. These two unfortunate souls live in a world full of shattered dreams, discrimination, and loneliness.
Candy is the janitor on the farm. His best friend is an old dog he got when he started working on the farm. Steinbeck explains, “A shot sounded in the distance.” (Steinbeck 49). They guys were in the bunk and Carlson- one of the men who works on the farm, offers to shoot the dog to put him out of his misery. When they hear the dog shot Candy is all alone. This was his best friend of all times. Candy explains, “I'd make a will an leave my share to you guys in case…. I ain't got I relatives nor nothing…” (Steinbeck 59). He said this because he was trying to escape loneliness. When his best friend was killed he needed to find a way to escape it do trying to go with George and Lennie to their farm after they raised enough money it would keep them all
He tried to escape prison and was shot dead, and it was normal for people like him to forget who they are and try live the way the world wants them to. Of Mice and Men perfectly described how a woman does not have a voice and they can forget their true selves to fit society's standards. Curley’s wife’s name was never revealed in the novella which illustrates how women are seen as objects who are undeserving of a proper name. She could have had a career in modeling however, that opportunity was taken away from her and she married Curley because that’s what women were meant to do during the time. Women just like her had no say at all and were marginalized, Curley’s wife was told to stay inside and to never come out. She never had the chance to live as freely as she wanted, she was trapped with only herself to keep her
Curley is one of ‘Of Mice and Men’s’ major characters. Although he does not appear to hold a central role, he is very important in other respects. The first of these is the way in which he treats George and Lennie, and the ranch workers in general on the ranch. Curley is the boss’ son. Therefore he acts like he is the boss himself. He orders the others around, and, although it is true that he does hold some power on the ranch, he does not hold any respect from the workers. He is nasty towards them, treating as though they are them below him, and often trying to pick fights.
In the novella, ‘Of Mice and Men’, the characters of Slim and Curley are created to have a strong influence on the other workers’ lives. While both the characters make an impact with the way they are presented, Steinbeck portrays them both very differently. He does this by giving the reader different impressions when each of the characters are introduced, the idiosyncrasies the author has given them, the way they treat others, how the rest of the characters react to the characteristics of Curley and Slim and why they influence particular characters.
In the period of the 1930s in America there were lots of forms of discrimination: one of them was sexism. Women were not seen as equal to men: they had fewer rights than men, were paid less and most of them were only allowed to take care of domestic chores. In that period of time, women started realizing how submitted they were to men, so they began having ideas on how they could improve their lives and gain more independence. They had their own American Dream.
Candy sees Curley’s wife would show to be a challenge to everyone from the earliest moments, which he justifies his saying so pointing out the "glove fulla Vaseline". This showed the danger of her, as if her husband finds out how she tries to interact with other men in the ranch, his short temper would be sure to cause trouble, especially when Lennie is around with his uncontrollable strengths.
Steinbeck's novel 'Of Mice and Men' explores the everyday lives of migrant workers during the Great Depression. In this era, American men were forced to leave their families and become 'drifters'. These were people who didn't have a fixed job and continually moved from place to place.
The characters always refer to her as “Curley’s wife”. Curley even says, “Any of you guys seen my wife (page 53)?” This shows that men were considered more superior in the 1930s. Curley’s wife was mistreated because she was a woman, and because she was married she belonged to her husband. Thus, Curley owned her. The characters would often degrade Curley's wife by calling her disrespectful names. Candy and George were having a conversation about her and Candy says hesitantly, “ Well, I think Curley’s married… a tart (page 28).” They also refer to her as a looloo. So, if she tries to make friends or have a conversation with someone, she will be considered a
