Introduction
Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, is so congested due to its size coupled with an enormous influx of people from the neighboring country, based on that, the correlation between the environment and living in another city’s is very different from that of Monrovia. This has resulted in an ongoing struggle to protect air quality, Liberia as a third world country has not embodied strategic environmental regulation policies to curb the increasing rate of air pollution. Outdoor air pollution has exposed the people of Liberia to a serious environmental and public health deficiencies i.e. respiratory disorders, cancers, etc. Air pollutants in My Community and the Possible Causes of Air Pollution
Air pollution have become a problem in Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia due to garbage burning. In every corner, most especially in the capital city suburb of Paynesville, Heaps of household along with industrial rubbish are piled up in Monrovia, and are not always being collected by the companies paid by the World Bank to collect this undesirable waste. The goal of the World Bank was stated clearly in 2009 to the sanitation companies, i.e. Collection of waste and disposal will be increased to 45% in Monrovia 's and it’s environ on a daily basis since December 2013, which is an increase of 15% points from the year 2009. However, it never works the way it was anticipated by the world bank.
The cause of this problem also derived from a massive influx of companies into
Liberia was the second free black republic but was established by white Americans based on racism.
From around 1800, people opposed slavery in the united states. Some abolitionists and slaveholders discussed the idea of setting up a colony in Africa as a place to relocate freed African-American slaves. They also tried to recruit colonists from among populations of free blacks and free people of color. Most opposed relocation, as they had been born and had claims to the United States. The first ship, Mayflower of Liberia, departed New York on February 6, 1820, for West Africa carrying 86 settlers. Between 1821 and 1838, the American Colonization Society developed the first settlement, which would be known as Liberia. On July 26, 1847, it declared its independence.in 1816, the future of Kru Country took a turn due to an event that took place
This paper explores the environmental policies of current-day Liberia. Emphasis is placed on post-civil war rule of law, personal waste disposal and infrastructure. In order to relay a sense of environmental policies in Liberia, this paper touches on the economy of Liberia as well as the basic demographics. An attempt is also made to touch on the disparity between conservation and a third-world population concerned chiefly with survival.
Pollution continues to pose an enormous threat to residents of urban cities worldwide. In the August 2008 Monthly Update, it is stated that approximately 800,000 deaths each year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution, making pollution the single most harmful environmental hazard to human health in urban areas (Kallman). The fact that pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people each year alone portrays just how dangerous living in these conditions can be. Kallman writes about a study which proves an increase in upper respiratory diseases, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and low birth weights when exposed to air pollutants (August 2008: Monthly Update). These can be very serious diseases and complications which, when contracted, can lead to death or very serious illnesses. There
Any community, irrespective of poor or affluent conditions, racial and ethnic backgrounds and the disparities of education and income levels, should work towards building a healthy atmosphere and a better quality of life. Enhanced understanding of the dynamics of the community and the necessary resources to be mobilized in improving the air quality, comes with health education. Thus the first step in any policy directed at eliminating the environmental burden on minorities should be public health education. Taking into account the cultural and educational differences, various suitable resources should be identified and utilized. Secondly, the communities might not be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of deteriorated air quality by themselves and thus it falls upon the healthcare professionals to recognize them and inform the appropriate officials, especially when there is a sudden surge of cases (Boyce et al. 2013). Third, the communities should be provided a legal recourse to help them understand the hazards they face and also to voice their concerns to authorities. While designing mechanisms to reduce air pollution, local authorities must take into account the vulnerabilities of the minority populations. EPA, along with the environmental justice programs, provides many monitoring and air pollution reduction programs. It is important to include the minority groups in these endeavors and tailor the programs according to their needs. It should be remembered that cultural competence plays a key role in all of these
Everyone today contributes to pollution in some way or another. Daily routines such as driving to work or cooking release hazardous gases and numerous other toxins in the air. The same toxins released can cause harm to the lungs or even kill due to the carcinogens. Not only does the polluted air harm people but the effect to the planet is vast as well. Issues such as global warming, acid rain, and droughts are evidently linked to polluted air. Though pollution is not solely based in the air, many other forms exist as well like water, radioactive, and thermal/heat pollution. Yet the sad reality is, many people are exposed to it far more than others because of their ethnic backgrounds or for poverty based reasons. Communities with lower income
Introduction: Air pollution in modern society is becoming more and more of a pressing issue. I became intrigued when I learned about the level of air quality in places such as Beijing, New York City, and London. I was curious about the air quality in a smaller large scale city such as Savannah, GA. Savannah is a large city but has a smaller population than Atlanta. I also thought about how the air quality could improve after it rains.
Air pollution is one of the biggest causes of environmental impact in any region. Therefore, air quality needs to be evaluated and maintained for avoiding health hazards. According to WHO, air pollution claims more than 2.4 million lives each year (WHO, 2002). Cities have to face more air pollution problems as compared to
Air Pollution today has lead CDC's fight against environmental -related respiratory illness, including asthma. An estimated number of 6.5 million deaths are attributed each year to poor air quality, making this the world's largest threat to human health.According to the World Energy Outlook and the IEA estimate that death due to household air pollution in Africa may decrease by 110,00 to 2040.However, due to economic growth, urbanization and automobile emissions, outdoor air pollution may rise from 300,00 to 450,000 over the same period. Am going to be looking at the causes of air pollution. the problems emerging with air pollution and also how we as a community can help decrease the amount of death rate associated with air pollution.I remember growing up in Africa Air pollution was always a talk about a subject that always comes out because it is really contagious due to the fact that we are breathing bad air that is caused by our human contribution to the environment.Air pollution is considered to be a public health problem, it is responsible for most of our health problems after some research has been conducted in many different parts of the world and regions. According to the Geochemistry and Health paleopathological research suggests that air pollution is a form of smoke, plagued our oldest ancestors.Air pollution has emerged as one of the leading risk factors for stroke worldwide.
Air pollution has been recognized as a major threat to environmental health, and the effects that it can have on the population are extremely varied. In the environmental aspects, air
LEAD SENTENCE. Liberia is located in Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and is between Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone. It is a country of foreign companies owning most of its land and wealth. It was first settled in by Americo-Liberians in 1817. This was the first cause of conflict in Liberia. The country was, and still is, in political and tribal conflict. Charles Taylor, the man who declared a revolution against the Liberian government, starting the country’s civil war, and, consequently, was convicted of countless war crimes and crimes against humanity, is one of the root causes of the country’s condition today. THIRD CLAIM.
Starting in the year 2004, the air pollution has reached an alarming level in the city o Toronto. Dr Barbara Yaffe, the acting medical officer of health of Toronto Public health, has released a report in July 2004 saying that the “air pollution [in the city] has contributed to over 1700 premature deaths and 6000 hospitalization admission in Toronto each year” (Yaffe, 2004, p.i). According to this report, pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and carbon monoxide have increased within the air of the city; these pollutants are tiny particles that are 2.5 micron in diameter or less and can affect people’s respiratory system and cause cardiovascular and respiratory problems such as “asthma, bronchitis in children, adult chronic bronchitis, and heart problem” (TPH, 2007, figure 1). Although it
This paper will discuss some of the major problems with air pollution in Atlanta, Georgia. The paper will also tell about the connection to health problem from air pollution from research and scholars. Air pollution is a global problem in many different areas and with laws and agency there is room for improvement. Some of the topic will be on chemicals and gases connected to air pollution. I will also discuss finding a solution to some of the air pollution problems in Georgia.
Air, is one of the most substantial source to mankind and our planet. While it exists, so does everything else along. However, in today’s epidemic, there has been certain factors that have increased in understanding whether the air we breathe today is healthy or not? Is it doing more harm than we thought? In other words, the health risks against air pollution have risen in the past few decades; all from what you may ask? Well, it could be for various factors and evaluations; either environmental or materialistic. Pollution is a major public health crisis in the world. (Friis, 2012). This is one of the conflicts that contribute to various aspects of an individual’s life, whether they may realize it or not. In this paper will include the sources that cause pollution with the effects it cause as well as policies on the regulation of air pollution.
The average resident produces seven and a half pounds of garbage every day that is buried down in landfills and litters lands costing a great amount of money. Nowadays, people face no more critical trouble than the need to save the weakening environment, mainly in urban areas, where solid wastes are uselessly dumped. It has been observed that cities have no controlled structure for garbage disposal. Each year, millions of dollars are spent picking up litter and more is thrown away in valuable materials that could be recycled. As humanity develops new technology and equipment, the level of waste increases every day. Due to the fact that there is a huge problem with garbage disposal, government representatives must contribute to resolving
