Wonder: A book that you need to read What if there was a book that could teach students many different lessons all at the same time? Well the book Wonder does just that. Throughout the book it talks about various themes such as bullying, friendship, kindness and much more. In the book, parts of it take place in Beecher Prep school where most of the topics, like bullying, occur. All of the topics that are mentioned are very real and do happen in actual schools. The topics that come up aren’t just random things, they will actually help you out in life. Most of the issues that are mentioned are good, like friendship, but some aren’t so good, like bullying, and are big problems today. There are kids out there who don’t really know that being a bully is bad and that you should be respectful to everyone. Some kids may not have learned, or have not been told enough, that bullying others is something you shouldn’t do. There are many different …show more content…
Because of those reasons, Wonder should be taught in all schools. Wonder talks about bullying in school. Bullying can “be physical, verbal, relational (targeting reputations and relationships), or directed at property (such as taking or damaging items)”. First off, in the book Auggie gets bullied because of his face. Auggie is new to the school so no one really knows him, and according to the article titled "Bullying", “the victims are often students who are not part of an established social group at school, such as new students or those who suffer from health or learning disabilities”. Next there is a boy named Julian who bullies Auggie throughout the book. Julian also starts to bully a boy named Jack, who used to be his friend until he started hanging out with Auggie. In the article it states that “school bullying can consist of physical violence against a student
Have you ever had 27 surgeries ? Have you ever HAD to take care of your younger sister? Well Auggie had 27 surgeries and edward HAD to take care of his little sister. Both Auggie and edward worked very hard to have what they have. Wonder By RJ Palacio with Auggie is a wonderful book a heart string puller and you can laugh as well . Edward’s Eyes by Patricia MacLachlan With Edward is definitely are heart string puller with laughs and tears. Edward and Auggie are also very caring and loving. Auggie and Edward work hard to get what they need and want. Edward and Auggie Both work hard in alot of things in there book.
One example of Julian bullying Auggie is when he kept putting mean notes in Auggie’s locker. I know that Julian is a bully because if he wasn’t a bully he might have actually been friends with Auggie. Another example of Julian bullying Auggie is when he was calling him names like a “freak” and he also started “the plague” just to be mean to Auggie. I know that Julian is a bully because he would not have started the plague or kept calling him a freak. This proves that Julian is a bully.
I recently read the book Wonder and it is a well written book that keeps the reader entertained as well as informed about bullying. It teaches children the importance of accepting others and stopping any harassment they see while in or outside of school. It also shows that if a child should see an incident with bullies, they should stand up for the victim or tell an adult if the situation gets serious. This novel is about a young boy with a facial deformity that is attending public school for the first time. He encounters many problems with bullying, but he finds friends that help him get through the rough times. The characters consist of the bully Julian, the protagonist August, and August's friends Summer and Jack. In the book, Julien is
Did someone ever bully you and don’t know anything about that person? Wonder was written by Raquel J. Palacio. He didn't want to go to school because he had facial problems in his face and he had surgeries when he was young. It was the day of Halloween August was wearing a bleeding scream costume, then the students in his class started making fun of him because he was wearing that costume. Three reasons that August should handled this situation differently by telling them to stop bullying him, telling one of the teachers about it
In part six of RJ Palacio's realistic fiction novel Wonder, it shows the theme that new things are great so you should take risks and live on the edge because you only live once. One example of the theme is when August is starting to lose his hearing and has to go to a special doctor. August has always hated the doctor's office because it brings back terrible memories like all 27of his face surgeries. He also thinks that by getting hearing aids it gives people another reason to make fun of him. “ Ever since I was little, the doctors told my parents that someday I would need hearing aids.
R.J Palacio said, “I honestly don't believe that empathy is something that can be taught. It can only be inspired.” Palacio’s real name is Raquel Jaramillo. She attended the High School of Art and Design in New York. Before she wrote the book Wonder, she designed book covers for a lot of book writers including Judy Blume.
In this story, there is conflict when Julian is starting to bully Auggie and jack. For example, Julian would write nasty, mean, and rude notes in his locker. That would say,“ You look
August always found out a way to ignore them. He knew he wasn’t gonna be friends with them so he made new friend and blocked out Julian. On the tour of the school, Julan made a rude comment about Auggie’s face and Jack stepped in and told Julian to knock it off and leave him alone. Many students find different ways to to overcome the challenge of being bullied.
Another example of physical bullying being enforced in the novel takes place when Roger and Maurice harass the Littlun’s. On the way back to the beach after their duty for keeping an eye on the signal fire, “Roger led the way straight through the [sand] castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones. Maurice followed …Percival began to whimper with an eyeful of sand…In his other life, Maurice had received chastisement for filling a younger eye with sand. Now, though there was no parent…Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing,” (Golding, 60). This shows significance because Maurice feels that he is able to basically do whatever he likes because he can’t receive any punishment from adults. This is also a factor that contributes to the reason children bully, according to Why Do Kids Bully?, by Byrne. The fact that these examples can relate to these factors, they provide evidence that Golding’s illustration of bullying has not altered.
At lunch a girl named Summer sits with him and they become friends and sit with each other everyday. Auggie constantly gets teased and made fun of by Julian. Julian's mom even photoshopped Auggie out of the class of the class picture and Julian gave it to him. As the year goes on more people like Auggie for who he is and they stop focusing on his face so much. When auggie went on the nature retreat he got attacked by a bunch of big seventh graders but luckily he was with a
The book ”Wonder” written by R.J. Palacio follows a young boy named August Pullman and his struggles in fifth grade. The struggle of being the only kid who looks the way he does. The struggle of being the only kid at his school who has Treacher Collins Syndrome. Even with all the obstacles in his path, August’s overall experience at Beecher Prep has had a positive impact on his life.
Kindness: Being kind,Friendly, and caring for others and not treating them with disrespect. You should always be kind to others if you want them to be kind to you. One act of kindness is standing up for somebody when they are hurt by someone else or helping somebody when they are in need. Another act of kindness is when somebody will give up there spot for you just like Miranda did for Via in the book Wonder. Via is having a school play and she is an understudy for the lead role.
As more and more children go to school, the rates of bullying go up as time goes by. there are many times at which students suffer all the bullying that occurs within their lives. As more schools become aware of the magnitude of the bullying occurring right under their noses, there are rules created to aid the victim. There are various types of bullying and these are created to do one thing, instill superiority among the “stronger” and place a feeling of inferiority. Bullies are the ones who are detrimental to a child’s development.
The first and most important lesson for a grade school or middle school student to understand and appreciate is kindness. Kindness is a major theme in this book. Most of the characters give serious thought about how their actions will affect others. In this book it shows how much kindness matters. To quote the text people
Bullying is defined as “verbal, physical, or psychological abuse or teasing accompanied by real or perceived imbalance of power” and is usually targets what children perceive as different (Olweus, 1993). Bullying is prevalent across the nation. It has devastating effects on students each day. Bullying is a problem for all students, regardless of race, gender or class. The National Education Association reports that 160,000 children are absent intentionally from school each day because they fear being bullied whether it is an attack or just intimidation by other students. This accounts for 15% of all school absenteeism (Hunter, 2012). Dan Olweus (1993) from the National School Safety Center tells us that bullying includes three parts: (1)
