On April 4th, 1964, The Beatles were the first and only band to hold the first five positions on the Billboard charts (billboard). To this day, they still hold the record on the Billboard charts for having the most No. 1 singles with a leading number of 20. They even went as far as receiving MBE (Members of the British Empire) medals from Queen Elizabeth II for their musical achievements (telegraph). The Fab Four were undoubtedly successful musicians. When they rose to fame, they brought a new type of excitement back to music. Sure, there were other rock bands competing with them, but one important difference between both was that The Beatles were memorable, even to this day; but why? Instead, they had a more artistic direction. Their willingness to be creative and experiment with different sounds led them to be one of the most successful bands in music history.

They didn’t always follow the “rules” when it came to composing a song; most of their songs were spontaneous when it came down to the structure of it. Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s goal was always to go in an artistic direction, which is why they purposefully broke musical norms. They made music sound remarkably complex, when in reality, they were just using the three basic elements and using them in a different way: melody, rhythm, and harmony. They had a tendency of bringing new instruments into the studio to figure out ways in which they could attain a more creative sound. During their trip to India in 1968, they were introduced to the beauty of Indian music and were influenced by the sound of it. When they returned, it wasn’t long before George Harrison introduced the Indian sitar to their music and added it to The White Album. One of their most prominent songs with an Indian spin was Norwegian Wood (The Bird Has Flown) (Encyclopedia of Creativity). Soon after they introduced Indian sounds in their music, interest in it spiked amongst rock musicians (newency). The use of Indian sounds then influenced the creation of psychedelic rock, which the Beatles also popularized with their final album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club which turned out to be one of the greatest albums of all time, according to Rolling Stone magazine (rolling stone). People relished in this new sound that the Beatles brought into the rock scene. Furthermore, when Strawberry Fields Forever was recorded, both John and Paul brought new instruments to the studio. John brought a mellotron (a keyboard instrument with different sound settings), Paul brought a flute, and George brought the sword mandel which was another Indian instrument (ency.)
