On April 4th, 1964, The Beatles were the first and only band to hold the first five positions on the Billboard charts (billboard). To this day, they still hold the record on the Billboard charts for having the most No. 1 singles with a leading number of 20. They even went as far as receiving MBE (Members of the British Empire) medals from Queen Elizabeth II for their musical achievements (telegraph). The Fab Four were undoubtedly successful musicians. When they rose to fame, they brought a new type of excitement back to music. Sure, there were other rock bands competing with them, but one important difference between both was that The Beatles were memorable, even to this day; but why? Instead, they had a more artistic direction. Their willingness to be creative and experiment with different sounds led them to be one of the most successful bands in music history.
They didn’t always follow the “rules” when it came to composing a song; most of their songs were spontaneous when it came down to the structure of it. Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s goal was always to go in an artistic direction, which is why they purposefully broke musical norms. They made music sound remarkably complex, when in reality, they were just using the three basic elements and using them in a different way: melody, rhythm, and harmony. A song with a perfect melody would be one that follows the verses, has a climax, and a resolution. The Beatles often did the

They had a tendency of bringing new instruments into the studio to figure out ways in which they could attain a more creative sound. During their trip to India in 1968, they were introduced to the beauty of Indian music and were influenced by the sound of it. When they returned, it wasn’t long before George Harrison introduced the Indian sitar to their music and added it to The White Album. One of their most prominent songs with an Indian spin was Norwegian Wood (The Bird Has Flown) (Encyclopedia of Creativity). Soon after they introduced Indian sounds in their music, interest in it spiked amongst rock musicians (newency). The use of Indian sounds then influenced the creation of psychedelic rock, which the Beatles also popularized with their final album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club which turned out to be one of the greatest albums of all time, according to Rolling Stone magazine (rolling stone). People relished in this new sound that the Beatles brought into the rock scene. Furthermore, when Strawberry Fields Forever was recorded, both John and Paul brought new instruments to the studio. John brought a mellotron (a keyboard instrument with different sound settings), Paul brought a flute, and George brought the sword mandel which was another Indian instrument (ency.) All of these instruments are completely different from each other and when they were put together, it constructed an
They also used audio tricks involving steam organs, orchestras, sitars, and even a pack of foxhounds in full cry at the end of “Good Morning, Good Morning.” The use of animal sounds were actually first used in the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds that the Beatles admired. When asked the Beach Boys where they got their innovation for Pet Sounds, the Beatles Rubber Soul album was what inspired them. “A Day In The Life,” the last song on the album, featured “what Lennon described as ‘a sound building up from nothing to the end of the world’” (Lazarescu). The song “Strawberry Fields Forever” fused two different versions of the same song and used reverse-tape cellos for an eerie effect. After George Harrison used sitar on the song “Norwegian Wood,” other bands like the Byrds, Yardbirds, and the Rolling Stones, soon followed incorporating Eastern-influence sounds into their work.
The Beatles were more than their music. They influenced the lives of millions of people unlike any musicians before them. They were the first and most popular band in one of the most important music movements in American history, the British Invasion. The year 1964 was the year both the British Invasion and “Beatlemania” came to America and forever changed the landscape of music in the United States by introducing the genre of pop, as it is today. The Beatles changed the rules of music. Many things that are considered normal now were pioneered by the Beatles such as: creating compilation albums, expressing their views on world happenings through the media, musicians in movies, and even mass media advertising. This is what began fostering the unique sound of The Beatles. So many different genres of music and a breadth of diverse artists inspired them, and consequently their sound became something entirely new. This is how The Beatles began to mold a new image of music, by taking all of the inspirations and melding it to become the epitome of their creativity. By using the Rock and Roll style of Elvis and combining it with other kinds of music they heard they started creating some of the most unique music at the time. They were also making unique music because essentially they were breaking all the rules because they didn’t know any of them. They didn’t have to follow the guidelines of the instruments that they were playing because they had no formal or professional training to teach them how to play. So instead of confining themselves in the wall of their own training they were able to broaden their horizons and break rules. However, this unique sound alone didn’t get them to the top, after Liverpool we shift our focus towards Hamburg, where the band perfected and fine-tuned their art, and acquired a strong stage presence.

There have been many people, known as artists, who have tried to change the world through their art. “Art” can be paintings, music, dances, sculptures, literature, or photography. There are many ways to communicate and express ones feelings but The Beatles did it through their popular music. Although they didn’t focus on changing the world of politics or try to protest through their music they have songs that focus on those exact two things.
The Beatles started as an English skiffle group in the late 1950s. By the time they reached their peak popularity, the term “Beatlemania” was coined to explain the frenzied obsession with the group. A former associate editor from Rolling Stone drew a comparison between the Beatles and Picasso, calling them “artists that broke through their time period to come up with something that was unique and original.” Throughout their discography, the Beatles have time and time again released music that both broke musical trends and engrossed the masses. They have held an “unprecedented top five spots on the

As well as music, The Beatles made a lot of influence is society. They challenged the rules in a way no one had done before—they broke the boundaries between what was normal and acceptable and what was not. Everybody did the same things, and acted by the same standards. At the time, for men in society, wearing long hair wasn’t very common and totally acceptable. But The Beatles changed that perspective in society, managing to make the long hair style in men very fashionable and conventional, as well as their taste in clothe—even though they were constantly criticized. All though the public sometimes criticized their freedom of speech regarding style, the Beatles opened up their own store, the Apple Boutique, in London. According to a journal article by David Philp, nearly fifteen million people tuned in to watch the Magical Mystery Tour film. While the Beatles seemed to be pretty close to perfection during most of their music making years together, at times things did not go so smoothly. Much of the chaos that ensued was due to the death of Beatles Manager Brian Epstein. Though the group decided to push forward with Paul’s idea of another film with an accompanying soundtrack, the result was possibly one of the worst Beatles films made. All of this came at one of the best times for the Beatles, their career was once again at a high point. Although the group had good intentions, the album and film simply left critics confused. The atmosphere, production, and
