The Beatles are one of the most innovative rock bands of all time. They have not only changed the way rock and roll is looked at, but also the way that the music is recorded. They have influenced the artists of the 60s and the 70s, and also many generations later and to come. Originating from Liverpool, England, the Beatles, or the Fab Four, consists of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles were more than their music. They influenced the lives of millions of people unlike any musicians before them. They were the first and most popular band in one of the most important music movements in American history, the British Invasion. The year 1964 was the year both the British Invasion and “Beatlemania” came to America and forever changed the landscape of music in the United States by introducing the genre of pop, as it is today. Many things that are considered normal now were pioneered by the Beatles such as: creating compilation albums, expressing their views on world happenings through the media, musicians in movies, and even mass media advertising. This is what began fostering the unique sound of The Beatles. So many different genres of music and a breadth of diverse artists inspired them, and consequently their sound became something entirely new. This is how The Beatles began to mold a new image of music, by taking all of the inspirations and melding it to become the epitome of their creativity. By using the Rock and Roll style of Elvis and combining it with other kinds of music they heard they started creating some of the most unique music at the time. They were also making unique music because essentially they were breaking all the rules because they didn’t know any of them. They didn’t have to follow the guidelines of the instruments that they were playing because they had no formal or professional training to teach them how to play. So instead of confining themselves in the wall of their own training they were able to broaden their horizons and break rules. However, this unique sound alone didn’t get them to the top, after Liverpool we shift our focus towards Hamburg, where the band perfected and fine-tuned their art, and acquired a strong stage presence.

Yet the younger generation of the twenty first century might ask why it was that they were so popular? Well there are many reasons why they were so popular. First of all, even before the Beatles had set foot in the U.S, Americans already held a fascination with British things. It was also helpful that when the Beatles first arrived in the U.S, they had the backing of a major american record label. In addition, the Beatles were an approachable group of young man with a sharp wit, who merely seemed to be having a good time. They each held distinctive personalities, being talented instrumentalists, singers, and songwriters, people became fans of individual members of the band as well as the entire band itself. The impact The Beatles had on society and society’s standards in the 1960s was so massive that their influences would last long into the future, even after the breakup of the band. The strides not only being made in music but in the culture of America were ones that would last for decades. Even today, 46 years after the breakup, the Beatles legacy is still kept alive through tributes and record sales are still skyrocketing. There have been no other entertainers in the history of music that has been so popular, influential, or as groundbreaking as The Beatles.
