Introduction

The battle at Little Bighorn is one of the most talked about battles in American History. In this paper I will cover the events in history that lead to the battle, the battle, aftermath and the lessons learned from this battle. Over one hundred years later it is still one of the most talked about battles in Army history.

History
The battle at Little Bighorn occurred on June 25th 1876 near an Indian camp located by the Little Bighorn River. The camp was located in the Black Hills not on a reservation. To fully understand the battle we must first look at what lead to it. The issues that arose in the eight years leading up to the battle would be the catalyst for what the battle at Little Bighorn.
To begin in 1868 the Fort Laramie Treaty was signed.
The treaty’s intention was to bring an understanding a civil relationship between the Sioux tribes and the new settlers. The treaty designated land in the Black Hills for the Native Americans to live and hunt. The land was to be protected from settler’s invasion. The times of amicable living were short lived when in 1874 General Terry sent Lt. Colonel Custer to evaluate the land in the Black Hills and to find a location for a new Army Fort. On his expedition Lt.Col. Custer discovered gold. The discovery of gold in the lands protected by the treaty would be the cause of the ultimate tension between the Native Americans and the U.S government.
