On September 3, 2016, I was given the opportunity to serve at The Statesboro Main Street Farmers Market from 10:00am until 1:00pm. This event is open to the public from April to November every Saturday from 9:30am-12:30pm beside the Bulloch County Courthouse and Sea Island Bank. Here you will find many local vendors selling their own produce. This event is not limited to produce as you will also find locals selling jewelry, baked goods, crafts, and my personal favorite, coffee. Some locally owned stores other than farmers bring their business to the market such as Three Tree Coffee Roasters, Sugar Magnolia, Cork’s Kettle Corn, B&G Honey Farm, etc. With a small town feel, this charming location is perfect for the venue at hand.
What was your role at the event?
Upon arrival, I went to the information vendor located in the middle of the Farmers Market where I was greeted by other volunteers and Melanie Sparrow, who told me my responsibilites for the upcoming hours. My first duty was to hand out various advertisements for the upcoming GreenFest which will be held October 1st, 2016, across the street from the Farmers Market. The GreenFest is held by Georgia Southern’s Center for Sustainability. The goal of this event is to teach people about green living and what it entails. Much like the Farmers Market, there will be live music, vendors, and workshops. Aside from passing out ads, I also helped keep attendance of everyone in the market by taking a count every 30 minutes or so.
Today was a winner of a spring day at the Jasper Farmers Market at Lee Newton Park. Every Saturday with a few exceptions, bright and early at 7:30 our farmers’ market opens with devoted vendors selling a variety of goods, plants, bakery items, crafts, decor, eggs and fresh veggies. And fresh coffee! Blankets, hair bows, jewelry, clocks, wine stoppers and wooden toys are just a few of the many choices among the creative crowd. Spring greens for the fresh salads you crave, eggs for the soufflés and quiches or everyday cooking are abundant, and breads! Plus, many choices of baked items to choose from. Sorbets and tamales, too! You must come and see for yourself all the treasures to be found.
annual Walmart Day. For some activities, I volunteered only a few hours of my time; however,
In their “Days of Action”, the employee volunteers went out to GRACE’s Donation Station and GRACEful Buys resale store over the course of two days on Sept. 16th and 17th, respectively.
Saturday I was working the volunteer session from 9a to about 3:30pm. After the session was over, I prepared close to 30 invitation letters to city and county officials in Washoe, Storey, Lyon, Churchill, and Carson City. We are inviting them to attend the poverty simulation during the agency conference at the end of September. I got those printed and sign so they could be mailed out Monday morning. Because it is common for some government organizations to take substantial time off in August, I wanted those letters out as early as possible to give time for them to plan. Reminder emails or post cards will be sent in at the end of August.
restaurant promo event, box collection, distribution, & reclamation. Sold Relay-for-life promotions. Activity assisted in obtaining donations used in a variety of fundraising situations, worked games and vendor cart at the relay.
To volunteer at special events such as Health and Wellness fairs, festivals, parades and fundraisers:
The Colorado River Fair, as part of the network of California fairs, provides an enormous return on investment both economically and socially. Fairs celebrate the town’s history and heritage. They are an educational opportunity for youth and provide wholesome entertainment for families. Four-H and FFA programs support California’s vibrant agriculture sector. Community members of all ages enter their artwork, baked goods, photography and other homemade products in pursuit of coveted blue ribbons. Many non-profit and charity-based organizations participate in activities at the fair.
I had to do a lot of things to do to prepare ourselves for this week of fun. When I first got to the Fairgrounds at 10:30, they were expecting me. Some I recognized and some I did not. But they put me straight to work.
While at the market I will describe my favorite and least favorite tents at the craft fair section. I will also give reviews on the different food trucks they have and will try food I haven’t had before. I’m extremely excited to buy food from the farmers market section and compare it to a farmers market back at home. There is also a specialty market section where I will be able to taste many different things from treats to jams and syrups etc. Spending all six
Hold a pre-event meeting for health fair committee and volunteers. Arrange for announcements during church service. Confirm health fair attendance of vendors
Because it was only my second time volunteering I hadn't met anyone interested in talking to me for an extended period. This interaction reminded me that I wasn't there just to tell guests where the nearest bathroom was or how much a sea otter ate every single day.
They also improved the lighting in the parking. There are usually about thirty families that help set up the fair, which is bringing in money to the community by using local motels and restaurants. After long weeks of the 4-H members putting in work for the fair, everything happens in one week. The fair is a primary fund-raising activity for many other groups, including the Russellville Band Boosters, the Ruritan Club, and the Home Extension Club. In 2015, it was possibly the single largest event in Pope County.
I worked for twelve hours at a phone bank calling voters to promote passage of Measure J. This was the second time I have done that for a Sonoma County initiative. Volunteering for the phone bank, I already knew what to expect (lists of phone numbers and names, scripts to use, and the people I would mostly be talking to, provided they answered the phone.) This was more than an assignment for me, however. This is something I feel truly passionate about because I use these parks regularly.
I was honored to partner with two local non-profits in our community to include The San Antonio Food Bank and Children’s Hunger Fund. My primary roles were to work collectively with other volunteers to fight hunger by delivering nutritious food to individuals and families in need. I helped package food and checked items for freshness. To ensure food was fresh I closely inventoried food for expiration dates, spoiled items and opened packages. Once food was inventoried, I then assisted with packaging items into boxes for delivery to those in need. I volunteered at the San Antonio Food Bank from May/19/2016 to Dec/1/2016 and the Children’s Hunger Fund for the month of April/2016.
Feed My Starving Children hosted a volunteer event at Coon Rapids, MN on August 31st, 2016 from 6pm to 7:30pm. The volunteers job was to package soy, rice, carrots mixed with potatoes, and vitamins into sealed bags. Then, place them into cardboard boxes to ship them out. As a volunteer, my job was to scoop the rice and the soy, then put them into the funnel which empties into the bag. By volunteering, I became a vital part of this assembly line. Without me, there won’t be anyone to scoop the rice and soy into the bags. My team worked well together because we helped each other. We all contributed to solving any problems that surfaced on the job. Not only that, but we showed patience and understanding when someone is working slow or is struggling to do their
