The Analysis
The first event involves me having a conversation with my friend, Al, over coffee, at Coffee Hit in Doncaster. I choose and invite Al to participate in this little social event because I have known him to be a coffee connoisseur, although he later corrects me and maintains that he is merely a coffee enthusiast. I hope that he can educate me on the coffee culture and share with me his knowledge about coffee. Up to this point, I must admit that my idea of a good cup of coffee is the instant Nescafe 43 blend or the gold roasts. I used to think that it is too much to spend AUD3.50 for a small cup of espresso coffee. Nevertheless, my taste in coffee is about to change, as I am about to gain a new appreciation for a decent cup of

This get me on a reading spree to confirm the fact, and I realise I end up knowing much more in the process. Flat white is an Australian invention that has turned up in New York and London (Prepare for Australia). Through further reading, I realise that there are various aspects to the coffee culture. In addition to the history, there is also consideration for the types of coffee drink that can be ordered, as well as coffee selection and order.
Al introduces me to the various types of coffee that I can order in a coffee store in Australia, such as flat white, cappuccino and latte. He also gives me a list of coffee drinks to look up online. His intention is obvious: to get me to read and extend my knowledge of the types of coffee drinks that are available. I have learned of drinks that I never know exist, and in the process, acquire functional knowledge. For instance, ristretto is “two thirds of a shot of espresso (the first 20ml - the most pure part of an espresso) served in a small cup.”
As mentioned earlier, I discover that ordering a cup of coffee is also part of the culture. “Barista” is a fairly new word that I learn only after my arrival in Australia. It basically refers to the person who makes coffee in a café. What I do not connect for the longest time, at least not until recently, is that I have been asking the wrong question for the longest time. It is not: which store that makes the best
The Drink of reason, coffee, seems to not have changed much culturally to this day, as when it is brought to the table over 250 years ago (pg. 170). Coffee remains to be the drink over which people meet
One of the big reasons Ms. Kudler is so interested in adding gourmet coffee in her stores is because of the massive boom in coffee over the past twenty years. Coffee has gone from a cheap product sold in Styrofoam for twenty five cents to a coffee and espresso mixed in different combinations with sugar and cream sold in fancy cups for over three dollars a cup. So as Ms. Kudler joins the ever growing market she is clear that she is competing with other giants in the coffee industry. Primarily she will be dealing with Starbucks, Starbucks is the coffee industry, and currently they are in many grocery stores and strip malls everywhere. Starbucks is so popular people refer to getting a starbucks rather than getting a coffee. Ms. Kudler is aware Starbucks and there
Initial preview: To achieve a good understanding of coffee, it is important to know what coffee is, the benefits
The caffeine in coffee become an ethical increase over alcohol and have become a fashionable social beverage. It was interesting to see how it started off as this very exotic drink only for the upper class and then turned into what it is now. Coffee is a very fashionable drink that does not cost much that many have led their days with in today’s society.
focus on coffee and hereby take an approach similar to Boratav (2001) who examines terms
During my visits to the coffee shop, I was very surprised that the amount of people that ordered donuts was not as large as I expected. I made that assumption that donuts would be a regularly ordered item because of the variety offered by the coffee house. However, the number of people who ordered donuts were more than those that ordered coffee. I noticed that the majority of people either ordered hot coffee or iced coffee (Figure 1). The other beverages such as, Macchiato, Cappuccino, Latte, Punch, Coolatta and Smoothie were not as popular. Additionally, I observed that many of the customers paid using cash, however the majority
Coffee has played a major role in the lives of many people around the world. “Yet, poetic as its taste may be, coffee’s history is rife with controversy and politics…[becoming a] creator of revolutionary sedition in Arab countries and in Europe” (Pendergrast xvi). After reading Uncommon Grounds, it is apparent that the history of coffee is intertwined with the aspects of the globalization process, the role of Multi-National Corporations, and global economic issues.
I set out to find a place to begin my observations, not knowing what to fully expect, what I may find. So I decided to look around at what is close to my home that isn’t a place I frequent or have even visited at all. Then it came to me, the Starbucks that is only about a mile away is a perfect place for me to observe subjects that I would consider different from myself, seeing as how I consider such obscene prices for coffee ridiculous. Starbucks is a very popular chain of coffee vendors that describe their product as more about quality than what Americans are used to in typical coffee joints.
The Nespresso story began with a simple but revolutionary idea; ‘The perfect cup of coffee, time after time and cup after cup’. To do so Nespresso pioneered the concept of premium portioned coffee, designed for maximum convenience. The process redefined the way coffee lovers around the world could enjoy their coffee. Key to the vision was a determination for quality, innovation and
A recent primary research survey has found that 70% of occasional coffee drinkers view the Mr. Coffee brand as an inferior or budget coffee brewing device that does not make a superior cup of coffee (Appendix, Opinion survey). Brands such as Keurig, Cuisinart, and DeLonghi inspire more thoughts of quality coffee than Mr. Coffee. Other consumers are opting to spend several dollars per cup of coffee at coffee houses such as Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, Dunkin Donuts, and even McDonalds (Appendix, Opinion survey).
The growing chained coffee shops culture in the on-trade has inspired manufacturers to launch specialty coffees in the off-trade. This has led to an increase in both volume and value sales of coffee in the Netherlands. Dutch consumers are becoming more adventurous when it comes to coffee, as is illustrated by the growing popularity of espresso, cappuccino, single origin coffee and flavored coffee.
The drink was no longer just a utilitarian morning stimulant and has a satellite pastime very European style: the windows from floor to ceiling, special atmosphere, soft music, dozens of varieties of coffee. However, besides all this, coffee is a business not only successful, but also has today a huge potential for development.
Recognition to major coffee chains, in the last two decades the coffeehouse has become a familiar portion of American life. Every day, millions of Americans stop for a specialty coffee. These consumers who would not have dreamed of spending more than fifty cents for a cup of coffee a few years ago now joyfully pay three to five dollars for their specialty flavored hot and ice blended javas.
Coffee is a beverage that is globally consumed, but also a product that has different values in different parts of the world. The role coffee plays in society differs around the world, from the farmers who grew the crops to the people who constantly consume them. Social theoretical perspectives are capable of showing the different roles coffee has in different societies. Symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and Marxism are three theories which show coffee’s role sociologically. These theories show how coffee affects people physically, how it affects them emotionally, how it leads them to have interactions, how it connects different parts of society, and how it’s economically controlled by a select few.
I can always look forward to starting my day off, with a steaming cup of coffee, I love that even if it 's a cold, dark, and gloomy day outside, a big cup of coffee can get me through the day. I could go on and on about my appreciation and fondness over the drink itself, but I won’t. However, I would like to share with you a remarkable phenomenon that I’ve come to notice, it is other people sharing this experience, this love for coffee, and they do it all across the globe in shops known as “cafes,” or “coffee shops.” And this is exactly what Howard Schultz (The CEO
