The American Prairie Poem Analysis

If an artist were to paint a picture depicting the poem “Oregon Winter” by Jeanne McGahey the colors that would predominate are gray and brown. Some of the visual details are the gray farmhouses with gray smoke coming from the chimneys. There would be soaked green hills in the background and brown “blotches of wet on the dusty road” leading up to the houses and barns. Visible from the windows of the barns are lofts piled high with wet yellow straws. The picture would also capture the sagging plumages of the wild geese flying in the sky next to the bloated gray clouds bursting with rain. Finally, there would be farmers conducting their chores, getting drenched in the slow, heavy rain of winter. It is dreary, and no one is in a rush.

This first stanza from the poem, explains the journey of a man driving through a sawmill town and his observations. Murray describes his journey through a small sawmill town in New South Wales whilst using strong, vivid imagery and emotive language.

The painting Nighthawks perfectly portrays a late night in a downtown diner during the 1940’s. The dull expressions leaking off the people’s faces give off a quiet mood. When you first look at the picture your eyes catch notice to how the diner is radiating a fluorescent light through the long continuous windows into the cold dark street illuminating the neighboring buildings. A sign above the diner shows what looks to be a cigar and under that the words read to be “Only 5 C”. The word Phillies Stretches across the whole sign which leads me to believe they are advertising Phillies, or that is the name of the small diner.

To begin, “AmeRican,” by Tato Laviera illustrates a hopeful attitude about the Latin customs that have a place in American culture/society. This poem can be interpreted as a celebration of the Latin presence in New York City, and the poet expresses how Latin people is creating a new generation in the United States. Moreover, the way of how Latin people is living and feeling safe into the United States is changing every day. As the narrator of “AmeRican” mentions “Across forth and across back,” (line 20) The narrator wants to demonstrate that he can be free in the city without the necessity of hiding just because he is from a Hispanic background; and that they can express themselves however they want. The poem “American Gothic” was written by John Stone after the painting called American Gothic by Grant Wood. When the painting is being viewed the viewer only sees the couple, pitch fork, and gothic window but does not think about anything beyond that. The poem tells the story of the painting what is going on beyond the edges of the painting. John also speaks on what is happening within the couple’s lives. The poem is like the painting but at same time it is not.

An author’s writing style expresses a different view to their story. Many authors vary in their writing style is shown in the story My First Free Summer, the poem Exile, the poem All American Girl and the short story Antojos. Alvarez’s writing style consists of many factors because she uses imagery, figurative language, and point of view to convey a theme.

Within “The Lone Ranger and Tonto in Heaven”, Victor is the main character of the stories in the book. Though his character, Victor was the young teenager who grows up in the Indian Reservation, and he is observing his society and struggle of the Indian Identity, alcoholic behavior, and family relationships. Sherman Alexie is the author 's of the book, and he grows up in the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington. He also wrote books, poems, and movie scripts. In his writing, he is remembering his reader to understand the Native Indian history that was affected when the European explorer came to the Native American and controlled their land, heritage, tradition, and culture. Thought out stories, the author used to describe the life of the Indian society and the youth who is trying to believe themselves the drug and alcohol are the tradition of the Indian culture. From the author perspective, he questing his audience what it means to Indian to live in the 21st century without land, tradition, and culture. Overall the Stories, I thought “Indian Education” story is most important to me, and within the story I picked paragraph that have symbolic meaning and support toward the Indian culture and tradition.

Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. He wrote a poem titled "One Today" that praised the good and unique things about the United States and also the everyday people who's daily routines help to make America the proud country that it is.

Born in Senegal around 1753, Phillis Wheatley became an important American poetic figure. At the age of 8, she was kidnapped and brought to Boston on a slave ship and upon her arrival to Boston, she was quickly sold to John Wheatley (Bio). Under her new family, Phillis adopted the master’s last name, taken under the wife’s wing, and showed her deep intelligence. Even though suffering from poor health, Phillis’s intelligence did not go unnoticed; she received lessons in theology, English, Latin and Greek. Being a slave did not stop Phillis from learning and experiencing her life, she participated in the master’s family events and eventually became a family member. The irony in this situation is

Thesis: Edward Hopper’s painting the Nighthawk represents that someone does not need large quantities of people to make them feel important.

Psalm 126:2-3 says, “Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among nations, “ The Lord has done great things for them”. The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” Allen Temple Ame was the epitome of joy. The atmosphere was lively and far from mundane. Everyone was loquacious and cordial. God was very much present in that service.

Coda by Dorothy Parker has a negative connotation on the view of life. It is accurate to describe this as someone who is very pessimistic, or even a little bit depressed. Therefore I made the tone of my melody very dark and not inspiring to reflect the personality of the poem. In each subsequent bar I decrease the initial note down by a note to represent how the author believes that there is no reason or motivation for living life. It is seen in each bar that I begin an upward trend with each initial note but towards the end of each bar I placed a chord that sounds like it is disrupting the flow of progress and motivation. I see pessimism as a dangerous entity that can harm the happiness of others and I believe it is clearly seen with the scheme in which I have wrote my melody. In the beginning of the 5th bar I begin an upward trend of each subsequent initial note that emphasizes the author’s slight change in tone, form completely negative to only slightly negative, indicating that there might be a change in the author’s thoughts. But as the melody continues to build up it all comes crashing down once the author wrote “throwing the battle”, and “Would you kindly direct me to hell?”. The decreasing melody of sixteenth-notes emphasizes the throwing of the battle. A battle is something that is built up and the end of a battle a victor is decided, but instead of building up the author decides to throw the battle. Finally, the last note represent “hell”. When people think of the American Prairie, they think of a dull, and grassy-full biome. But, the American Prairie is an extremely fascinating biome. At first glance, this grassy biome may look really dull and boring, but if you look deeper into it and feel nature playing its daily roles in this prairie around you, then you will see how unique this biome is.

The name of the song that i chose for my poetry analysis is “Here Now” by Montana of 300. I found these lyrics on https://genius.com. This song is a lyrical because all songs are lyrical and it’s also narrative because he is talking to his sons. This song is about Montana talking to his sons about only focusing on their future. He explains that they both have potential to be someone important. He wants them to know that he will be there for them no matter what. He tells his sons to have friends that will truly be there for them and have goals. He wants them to know that they have the ability to work hard at something. He also tells them that they should stay loyal to who they actually are no matter what. He is also telling them his success story and how they shouldn’t do what he did to get where he is now. The chorus repeats about two to three times to enforce that he is there for them now and he wouldn't lie to them. In the middle of the the song he talks about what he did before he was famous. He talks about how he started out rapping in a basement and selling drugs, but since he's famous he has changed and now he isn't doing anything that would get him into trouble. At the end of the song he talks about how he's going to change hip hop and how he's one of the best.
