This idea of physical reinforcement is also known as corporal punishment and is still present today in southern American states including some Texas school systems. Corporal Punishment is defined as a “punishment of a physical nature, such as caning, flogging, or beating” however this fails to include the psychological implications of corporal punishment in schools (corporal punishment). The conditions to model this violent behavior includes “attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation” which can be interpreted as the attention to the fact that violence is an adult’s response causes a child to model the behavior of the adults around them resulting in more violence (Bandura).
Subconsciously most adults tend to believe that the easiest way to deal with a disobedient child or person is to physically harm. This answer of violence more times than not stems from the anger a student caused in doing wrong. Justification for corporal punishment originates from the past and is often the defense of pro-corporal punishment advocates. Physical punishment can be traced back to ancient times exemplified in Egypt, concerning the slaves that built the pyramids, these deep roots of physical punishment are often referred to as a form of proof that it works. To use Egyptian violence as an example is pushing the envelope of what corporal punishment is today, however the reaction to that punishment is similar because human nature is present in both time periods. Punishment in and of itself is not inheritably detrimental to a person’s development, however in the case of school corporal punishment the extra violent input into a child can produce unintended violence later in life.

Corporal punishment teaches kids to be respectful. In source A it is said “ Kids at the school sat the paddle definitely think twice about acting up’’ With this being saidis shows that the kids being hit with the paddle makes them never want to act up again so they do not get hit. In source A it is also said that John C. Calhoun Elementary earned three statewide awards. The kids began to be more respectful and it changed the school for the better. It was also said in source A “ There will always be new kids who need to learn the limits at school. ” Having corporal punishment will teach the kids the limits and they will learn to be more respectful.
The final phase of this process is the motivation for the behavior. In Bandura’s experiment the children observed an adult praised for behaving badly, and this is enough, under Bandura’s theory, to cement those actions into a repeatable response by the child at a later stage. Bandura believes this theory also supports the rise in the number of aggressive teens in high crime areas (Isom, 1998).
This act promotes youthful violence. When a child has to receive corporal punishment, it can hurt them in the long run when they grow-up. “A lot of these these students come from violent homes, and kids see this as another act”. (Source B) Some kids that are innocent but still have to be punished for something that might be “petty”, Students might think this as an an abusive act.
Children need guidance and personal example from the adults around them to help them learn what is acceptable and what behaviour isn’t acceptable. Behaviour is greatly influenced by primary socialisation and children will react and take in how close family members act. Bandura developed the modelling idea where children would copy the adults around them. “There is much evidence that a child who witnesses or experiences violence at home may develop aggressive tendencies.” There are a number of different types of behaviour these include assertive, aggressive, submissive and manipulative behaviour.
Editors remarked that in, “Spanking Your Children: Good or Bad”, the CED studied how spanking may be effective short term, but there may be consequences later in life. The more children are spanked, the less they are likely to be mannerly, and well- behaved in the future. They continued on by stating, “Spanking does not teach children why their behavior was wrong or what they should do instead; it teaches children that the only reason to behave appropriately is to avoid being punished.” (2017). This research has proven that there is not only a physical negative reaction, but a mental one too.
There has been a significant amount of research on the impact of corporal punishment on children, and its effect on their behavior going into adolescence. Several studies have shown that experiencing physical discipline during childhood leads to higher acts of aggression towards others, that physical punishment leads to externalizing these aggressive behaviors (Lansford, Deater-Deckard, Dodge, Bates, & Pettit, 2004). By changing important variables for each study, several researchers have come to the conclusion that parent-child physical aggression has a more significant impact on externalizing behaviors if this aggression occurs during adolescence than at younger ages (Gunnoe & Mariner, 1997). Furthermore, past studies have demonstrated that the level of corporal punishment experienced as a child is directly related to the probability of using physical violence against intimate partners in the future, suggesting that this aggression could translate further than adolescence and into adulthood (Douglas & Straus, 2006; Swinford, DeMaris, Cernkovich, & Giordano, 2000).
An adult who practices punishment, controls a child externally. This communicates to a child that they are not able to control themselves, thus have no responsibility for their actions. Also, it can create in the child’s mind, the idea that they can commit a behavior so long as they do not get caught or are willing to accept the consequences. Today, many people have this notion that physical abuse is in no way a solution to helping children discern between right and wrong. Discipline is supposed to teach children right from wrong, but spanking only leaves bruises and welts on students’ bottoms and unhappy parents. Spanking should not be allowed in schools because it causes children long term psychological problems and doesn’t help to improve a child’s behavior; instead, methods like isolation, deprivation and reparation allowed by the education code should be used.
