In the short story, Thank You Ma’am by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella in the story shows the theme, you should not have to commit crime to be happy, or to have things in life. This shows throughout when the old lady feeds the child, tells him it's incorrect to steal, and when she gives him money to buy shoes. To begin with, the child tried to steal the ladies pocketbook, but when he did she said, “I believe you’re hungry—or been hungry—to try to snatch my pocketbook.” This means she didn't want him to steal the pocketbook but felt the need to help him.
