The rhetorical description for this week consists of two images from the same film named An Inconvenient Truth. The first image comprises fumes, industrial environment, dark area, and unclear sky. At the same time, penguins; dunes or sandy environment with brown color; movement of penguins in just one direction, which looked like they were migrating to new place; and those penguins moved in twos. Although the two images represent the same purpose, but there were certain distinct differences between them. For example, while the first image showed that fumes were emitting from certain industries in the environment, the second image lacked this information. The fumes generated from the first image are likely to cause pollution in the environment, …show more content…
The penguins were seen to be moving together in twos, perhaps, their present place was not conducive for them. This environment looked like a desert in contrast to the usual belief that penguins live in extremely cold environment. This may invariably explain the reason for their migration as it was seen on the second image. As stated above, the penguins’ migration might be as a result of global warming which might be as a result of man-made or natural occurrence. In fact, based on this image alone, it can be inferred that global warming is not only affecting human beings, but also animals and other living creatures may also be affected. Also, the second image may be interpreted as an ongoing disruption of ecological environment of penguins, which has led to their migration probably to a better environment. Although, the first image showed that there was an existence of environmental pollution, there was no indication of movement to a better place. It may be as a result that those that lived around this polluted area did not have options unlike the penguins on the second
I know because “The workers were scrambling to save the oil slicked birds, but the penguins were in bad
In Joanna Klein’s, a science journalist, short argumentative essay, “A Birder’s Heaven: Just Follow the Stench to the Landfill”, expresses, some of the best places to see birds are places most humans do not want to go. Klein supports this claim by using humor, situational irony, and overstatements. Klein’s purpose is to expose the irony in nature, exposing the amount of beautiful birds in a landfill. Through the piece, Klein depolopes a a tone of optimistic tone for nature loving adults. She uses this tone to reflect back on the theme by introducing an area many of these nature loving people may not know about.
“Penguin responses to climate change in the Southern Ocean” by Jaume Forcada and Philip N. Trathan (2009) was a study conducted to analyze and predict the migrating patterns of different species of penguins due to changes in climate. (p. 1618) Also, Forcada and Trathan investigate whether or not certain species of penguins possess phenotypic plasticity (the ability of an organism to change its phenotype in response to changes in the environment) (p. 1618).
In this photograph that stands about two feet in height and in length, was seen at the Irving Art Center. At the time of the visit the gallery had an exhibit from the National Geographic called “The Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary.” The photograph is titled King Colony, and it is by Frans Lanting. In Lanting photograph includes tens of thousand of Aptenodytes patagonicus which are also known as king penguins. The Aptenodytes patagonicus or king penguins seem to be frozen because they are motionless and calm, also, there is so many of them that blend into the horizon.
Could you image being spilt on with oil and not knowing what to do? In “The Seabird” and “The Amazing Penguin Rescue” they are about penguins that got dangered with an oil spill. Volunteers need to help them get back to their original habitat, but fast! In “The Amazing Penguin Rescue” the author, Lauren Tarshis, is an author of children's books, with several series of fiction and historical works found in thousands of libraries and translated into several languages. “The Seabird Chronicle and “The Amazing Penguin Rescue” has many similarities and differences such as conflict and setting.
Dyan deNapoli: The great penguin rescue http://www.ted.com/talks/dyan_denapoli_the_great_penguin_rescue/transcript?language=en In deNapoli speech, she is talking about the oil spill in the Gulf Of Mexico and the majority of African Penguins who were affected. A ship named "The Treasurer" sank off of Cape Town, South Africa spilling 1300 tons of fuel, and polluted the habitat; half of the worlds African penguins. Other spills killing majority of the penguins occured as well. We should now be focusing on our two main threats, which are overfishing and global warming, we need to make a change so our penguins dont go extinct.
A difference between “The Amazing Penguin Rescue” and “The SeaBird Chronicle” Is how did the people help the the penguins. In the passage “The Amazing penguin Rescue” The people took the penguins back to a warehouse where People fed and cleaned the penguins. “ You bit his leg that will leave a scare but he cares more about you than himself”(Tarshis 2). The man cares to much about the penguins to let them go even though the penguins keep injuring him.
The lecture gave in a wildlife animal class is taking about some endangered species. The professor directs students to a discussion by letting them to look at the dwindling populations of migrating shorebirds and more about what scientists are doing to help them. They have a look at the Delaware Bay is one of the most important places many shore birds have stopped and lived here. The shore bird comes and leaves every spring and fall. In late May and early June, they gather on almost every beach along the Delaware Bay. Having so many birds assembled in one place cause a seeming that their numbers are fine, but actually it is a sort of deceiving. The professor considers a particular bird has received a lot of attention. That is a species of red
The Highland Beach group was a Paleo-Indian group, which means that they were most likely hunter-gatherers. Hunter-gathers didn’t cultivate nor herd animals so they almost certainly searched around for plants and animals to consume. According to Arch of Coastal Palm Beach County article states the bodies were buried in a sand mound (Wheeler, Kennedy, Pepe, 2002). This collection is supposed to have a hundred twenty individual. Due to this kind of lifestyle they may have been prone to diseases such as osteogentic sarcoma, osteomallacia, and lastly osteoporosis as a consequence. For this study I must look at the femurs of individuals in F.A.U.’s Highland Beach collection for any signs of osteoporosis and it’s possible causes. If there are
The Inuit need to understand the natural patterns of arctic wildlife because the world has become more unprudible. In the video it states “ The environment has become more unpredictable.” This states that global warming has caused the ice to melt and causes the arctic to become more unprudible. In conclusion, the arctic has become more unprudible. Part 7:19
The habitat for the penguins are usually around the south like Antarctica , north pole, and ect.. Penguins are usually prefer their their habitats in those specific areas because they prefer colder and colder weather than hot weather. Penguins only prefer cold over warmer weather because in the cold penguins have to survive off of fish. From what i have read online it states that if that you're just a small penguin you might live up to about 6 years maybe 7.
The positioning of the subjects in image 1 and image 3 in relation to their environment is a quintessential example of how Australia is sacrificing its natural beauty and icons. Image 3 shows two kangaroos, another internationally recognisable icon, positioned in their natural environment which is a healthy and thriving Australian bush. This image is affiliated with a typical Australian ecosystem and means that in this area, Australian flora and fauna are thriving. Image 1 also shows an Australian icon in it’s natural environment, but the environment in this image has been destroyed by humans. This means that in this particular area the flora and fauna are not thriving due to the negative effects of human intervention. These images clearly demonstrate how Australia is sacrificing its natural beauty and internationally recognisable icons for the sake of development and profits, because together they discern the effects of deforestation and provide a before and after point of
As climate continues to change over decades, we are continuously seeing more and more of its damaging affects to our wildlife population. Pollution, climate change, and human destruction has led to drastic changes in the life of animals that live in the ocean and near coastal areas. The peer-reviewed journal Pollution, habitat loss, fishing and climate change as critical threats to penguins illustrates the damages of climate change and pollution to the lives of Penguins. In 2013, 11 species of penguins were reported as threatened in terms of extinction, whereas, in 1996 only five species were reported as threatened. What is causing this major increase?
On the 42 minute the video says, “A limited number of species is present.” This shows that there is no food for the Inuits to hunt and therefore they can’t eat. This also proves that there is still a few species in the Arctic to keep them living for a little while longer. On the 42 minute the video states, “If temperatures rise even a little, plants flower earlier in the year.” This proves that the longer the global warming is, the more the environment changes. When winter ends, the less time the Inuits will have to hunt. This also means that the ice can melt sooner and become thinner which complicates the techniques of the Inuits. They may need to change their hunting techniques to survive their new climate and environment. On the 37 minute the video says, “Not even any bearded seals.” “The weather must not be too good.” and on the 38 minute the text states, “Great spot. Surely there are caribou around here. There’s food for them over there.” This shows that the climate has to be right to look for certain animals. The seals and caribou could be migrating. The warmer weather may have some impact on the animals and the Inuit’s way of hunting them. In conclusion, why global warming is significant to the Inuit is because there is no food for the Inuits to survive, it changed
“Once upon a time a colony of penguins was living in the frozen Antarctic on an iceberg near what we call today Cape Washington.” From the first sentence of John Kotter’s bestselling book, Our Iceberg Is Melting, it is difficult to tell that one is about to read a great fable about how to manage change in business as well as everyday life. ! The following summary will explain the key moments of the fable and how they relate to our lives.
