The debate on whether or not texting is an issue has become a huge controversy throughout the years. Many people believe that texting should be prohibited in schools because it is a distraction from learning. Others believe that if used correctly, texting could be beneficial to students. Personally, I feel that texting is a distraction to students. Texting can be looked at as a learning tool, but it could also also cause problems in the classroom. There are many schools that say that having cell phones in the classroom can actually improve student learning. Phone use has changed the way we do most things, including having fast access to the internet and to our peers. It's proven that students that text are more prone to have more grammar errors than those who don't as often. With slang spreading to students, they take on a new language due to texting, and destroying the english language all together. Because of this, they are losing sight of how to properly speak and write, as teachers noticed while grading some of their students papers. The students grades are dropping due to multitasking, ignoring what the teachers are saying, being disrespectful and losing focus on school work. Not only are the phones a distraction, but it can be used to cheat on tests or send answers to other students. 65 percent have admitted to cheating, seeing another student cheat, or have overheard someone talk about using their phones to cheat. Cell phones are making it easier for these students to get answers online and get better scores on tests without actually studying. Texting has fast become the preferred form of communication for young adults; however, students need to be dissuaded from texting during class because of the result in loss of valuable class time, lack of effective communication skills, and consistent use of improper English leading to a negative impact on students’ learning.
Is texting such a horrible thing or does it actually have its benefits? Does it cause one to be illiterate? Do you get lower grades in school because you text? Many people have different ideas and opinions when it comes to texting. In the essay “ 2b or Not 2b, by David Crystal, texting is talked about as being helpful and created for a specific purpose. Specifically, Crystal responds to the claim that reporter John Humphrys makes, “texters are vandals who are doing to our language what Genghis Khan did to his neighbors 800 years ago”. Then, on the other hand you have Sylvia E. Mc Donald, who argues that texting while in class causes one to have lower grades and this could predict how they are in their future.
Most schools do not allow the use of cell phones in school or in class, so the school feels like changing their policy of cell phone use might be a bad idea. Students could take advantage or miss use the privilege of phones in class. There will always be students who act out in class, but the school must discipline those who do and reward those who do not.

Katie Hafner’s article, “Texting May Be Taking a Toll,” displays that the rising number of texts sent by adolescents day in and day out is starting to take a big toll on them, their lifestyle, and the people around them. To start off, in the first part of the article Hafner expresses that the point of the first section is that with a growing number of young people utilizing texting and using it nonstop texting is causing serious issues such as anxiety, failing grades, distraction in school, sleep issues and many others. The author exclaims in the section that, “The phenomenon is beginning to worry physicians and psychologists, who say it is leading to anxiety distraction in school, falling grades, repetitive stress injury and sleep deprivation.”
Many students have used their cell phones to share answers to tests and quizzes, and to report inaccurate and offensive information about other students and their school. Cell phones can be distractions in the school environment, evading classroom time and reducing student’s academic success.
According to Lenhart, in 2012 three quarters of teens, ages 12-17, owned cell phones. Of those teens, twenty three percent of them indicated they possessed a smartphone. With the technology advancing in cell phones, it has become yet another classroom distraction and a serious concern for cheating. Assistant Professor Campbell from the University of Kansas brought to attention, “one study found that a third of university students in the US play video games on their mobile phones and laptops during class (Gilroy, 2004 as cited in Katz, 2005).” The majority of researchers have found that mobile phones have lead to problematic use in the school environment

Issue: Texting is bad in many situations and younger individuals find texting to be acceptable in certain circumstances where it should not be exercised.
Many teachers believe that cell phones don’t belong in a classroom because there are several disadvantages. An example maybe a student who uses a cell phone in class has no intension in listening or paying attention to the teacher. This student has a short attention span who cares about socializing more than his/her education. Cell phones can be very disruptive; they can invade people’s privacy and can also be used as harassment or bullying. The usage of cell phones is creating a huge problem particularly when they are used in school.

We hear a lot these days about texting - the ability to get/send a text message from/to anyone, anywhere, via wireless networks and some kind of portable device, which might be a fancy pager, a digital cellphone or a palmtop computer. The technology is here, though it doesn't work everywhere yet. We could argue about how affordable or reliable texting is, but we can't deny it exists and will probably become more widespread. But is this a good thing? In my opinion, there are certain ways in which texting affects many teenagers.

Most of the time during a test, students go to different websites to look for answers .Since they get free Wi-Fi in classrooms; it even becomes easier for them to cheat. In addition to that students can also trade answers with other students in class through Facebook, sms, kik, message and other social apps.Nowadays, cell phones have become one of the most useful source in America. In other words, a month earlier, I was looking through some photographs in my library class .The pictures were about students who cheats on class works, tests, quizzes and homework and can even go to Gail for plagiarism. On the other hand, today’s students take this as a joke. They don’t realize how it affects their grades. You can cheat a lot in life but one day there will be nothing to cheat from or anyone to get the answers from. In spite of this it is not always mandatory for someone to depend on a source more than themselves. This was another reason to explain why students should not be allowed to bring cell phones to school.
