Everyone knows how difficult it is when you are not ready to take a test or when you didn’t study. There are a lot of different types of ways to approach test taking. I used different types of test taking strategies depends on what subject it is. The one strategies I used is flash cards for memorizing topics or classes like history medical assisting. I always use “quizilt” most times because, it is easy to create and it is always with me which is in my phone. I can prepare for my test while I am walking or while I’m eating. It can sound it out for me and also I can search for same topics that have been created by someone and study from it. The second strategy is mnemonic device, I will use letters, images, sounds, and rhymes as memory boosters.

Preparations for tests should ideally begin much earlier than shortly before the actual test taking period. Indeed, many students perform dismally in their tests because of their failure to understand this and many other principles of test and exam preparation. In addition to discussing how students should prepare for tests, this text will also identify the various strategies which should be embraced by students during test taking in an attempt to enhance performance.
I have learned while in college that the best ways for me to learn are by being able to see or write down something because it is something that I can review and still be able to grasp the concept when it is needed for a test. This strategy was helpful when I was in my English and math class. The second thing that also helps is viewing models because there is something that is tangible which makes it so much easier for me to be able to learn this is the strategy that I used while in my biology. The help of peers has also helped me with my learning process as well because there is not as much pressure when going up and talking to the teacher about what is wrong.
According to the textbook, a memory strategy is the deliberate mental activities individuals use to store and retain information (Berk, 437, 5). For example, if a student named Sarah has many words to remember for a project, she can use rehearsal to effectively remember the necessary words. Rehearsal is an activity that involves repeating the information to herself. Additionally, language expertise predicts the development of rehearsal in the early grade school years, perhaps because a clear vocabulary size and ability to automatically name items is required for children to use the strategy (Berk, 437, 5). In an educational setting, teachers can encourage students to try this strategy to prepare for assessments! Teachers can play a huge role in promoting this effective strategy to the class in order for the students to be aware that this strategy is an option!
This relates to how Professor Dewey says it is easy to feel like you are understanding with your study resources close to you. Flashcards are fairly effective for me. The repetition makes ideas stick. I usually color code them to so I have something tangible to associate with them as well. My study habits are not absolutely terrible but they could definitely use some work.
Another great strategy I learned is that you should not study for an exam in your room. The best way to keep yourself from being frustrated or falling asleep is to keep moving. Whether is to hop from coffee shop to coffee shop every two hours in order to stay focused. Lastly, a great way to study is to do it with a group of people. However, it has to be the right people. As a student who is trying to get a good grade on an exam, the time you have before an exam should be effectively used. That means not having a study group with your closest friends because you’ll gossip all the time. It also means that you need to surround yourself with people who know the material. Sometimes it is good to help a classmate learn the material but, it cannot interfere with your own study plans. In other words, the study time has to be beneficial to everyone. Another way that you can get distracted is your cell phone. Turn off your cell phone when you study. Test taking is one of the most nerve-racking things for most people. Most of the time tests can either make or break your grade, especially if it's worth majority of your grade. That fact that one piece of paper can show how much knowledge you have attained is very scary. In my experience of test-taking, I have found out that I get nervous about tests. The first AP Biology test of the year was no exception. To prepare for the test I studied for hours on end, when the day of the test finally came I went to the review session and took the test, and then the day after I was pleased with my results.
You may’ve been one of those students that know the material forwards and backwards, but get a bit nervous and struggle during the test itself. There are several ways to get rid of the stress before a big test that will allow you to put your best foot forward in applying to the open positions that you’re interested in that are currently open.
The test taking tutorial taught me different strategies for different types of test. For multiple choice test I have learned to eliminate options that are unrelated to the question. I learned to do that because I would sometimes just pick what sounded good and not really read the rest of the choices available. I also had a problem with essay test. One strategy I would use that is to check my answer for grammar, spelling, and completion. I used to not do that because I felt rushed, but when I would get my test back it would be all marked up with corrections that needed to be made, resulting in a bad grade. On matching test I learned to single out the correct answers by going down the left column and figuring out the questions that I knew and leaving the ones that I wasn’t to sure on, and that would make It easier to single out the right answers.
I want to achieve by participating in the New York Cares SAT Prep program because I need this program to help me with the English skill very much. I immigrated to the US from China 3 years ago. It was a difficult way to me to accept and learn a new language. It took me 2 years to pass ESL from when I only knew very little English words. However comparing to other students who born or live here for long times, my English skill is still very low. I still have to many shortages of English skill to improve in order to catch up the level of being a real English speaker. Test anxiety is a very common trait that occurs in many people. You have spent weeks studying for the examination, covered every single topic and read every single material having to deal with the upcoming exam. You walk into the classroom, sit down, and retrieve all your materials that you need. The instructor hands out your exam and gives everyone the confirmation to begin. You open up the exam and start reading the first question, hoping to be familiar with the subject. As you read question after question, you realize that you can't recall the answers to anything that you have just read. According to Salend (2011), this is the time that "you start to panic, your chest gets tight, you get sweaty, you start feeling overwhelmed" (p. 58). A range of different and useful topics have been discussed since the start of Pathways to lifelong learning, some of which I found to be of particular help. The college expectations which we learned towards the beginning of the course was especially helpful to learning how to become a critical thinker, something that was not very touched upon throughout my time in high school. I now use Bloom’s Taxonomy when beginning to prepare for an important paper or presentation. In addition to the first chapter, I had also found great help in the second chapter on the skills needed to succeed in school. In the past, I used rehearsal as my main strategy to memorize for any upcoming tests or exams, however that often resulted in either retrieval failure or ineffective encoding. I now use chunking and elaboration as my main strategies to studying as I find it most effective when studying and retrieving information, especially when I am needing to memorize and learn a big amount of material.
