This week was I was relaxed and nervous. I was relaxed because I am done with my individual assignment, and nervous because we have presentation. I think group member before us as set the presentation standards high, and we as a group need to at least try to match the level. Other than reading and working on the presentation I had two case studies, 9 discussions board posting to finish. I am poor public speaker, I get extra nervous to talk in front of the class. Hope I can manage to talk for two minutes, and explained what I read and research on my topic. This week there was three cases that we studied. Karen Quinlan, Nancy Cruzan, and Terri Schiavo cases, that involved incompetent adults. The main concern here was whether there medical
MILLERSBURG — A Millersburg woman last week denied criminal charges she wrote $150,000 in checks to herself from a business that employed her as a bookkeeper.
Cruzan V. Director, Missouri Health Department is a case involving a young lady, Nancy Cruzon, who became incompetent and in a vegetative state following an automobile accident in the State of Missouri in 1983.She was being kept alive by artificial feeding via a gastrostomy tube. As it became apparent that she will not recover her cognitive functions her parents requested the hospital employees to terminate the artificial feedings
Here in the United States, the topic of assisted suicide as long being discussed and disputed many times especially when there is a high profile case in the news. According to (Sanburn, J 2015) throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Death with Dignity National Center kept an office in Washington, D.C. For years, Republican lawmakers tried to pass legislation nullifying Oregon’s 1997 Death with Dignity Act, which allowed terminally ill patients to obtain life-ending medication. The legislation never made it out of the Senate, but it eventually passed in the Republican-controlled House, and the aid-in-dying organization felt compelled to keep pressure on Congress to stop the bill. Then came Terri Schiavo.
Also, whether there was collaboration between facility members to ensure quality care. More issues would be whether examinations were thorough and tests were analyzed before discharging the patient. The moral issue at stake in this case is if the facility believes they did the right thing or not. For example, the physician could not recall what instructions he gave Kelly’s father, but he did nothing to clarify the situation, he just gave the father a business card as if that would suffice for his inability to remember the instructions he assigned (Pozgar,
This week was not too bad in regards to any of the work I actually needed to do. There are definitely some concepts that I think I need to improve my understanding but I think that I did take away what was available from the texts we were provided.
That was a beautiful week, I enjoyed reading all of the materials despite my challenge about the electricity issues. I have some concerns because until now due to electricity issues I am unable to participate in the discussion forum. I posted so late in the discussion when the electricity was established I prepared my assignments, I assessed my peers, and I did not find enough time to go in the discussion forum to read and rate my fellow classmates; and I did not grade for my discussion. Then, I will strive to see how I am going to solve this problem quickly.
Week 2 has been quite overwhelming. I did not have enough time to do my reading assignments over the weekend. I normally utilize Saturday and Sunday to do my research work and reading. Unfortunately, on Saturday morning, I attended a meeting that took half of the day, when I returned home my husband informed that he had invited our friends over for dinner as they will be leaving for Melbourne the following day. My house was a mess as it hadn't been cleaned the previous weekend when we were away. Thus, my whole Saturday was wasted on doing the trivial aspects of life. I missed church on Sunday so that I can catch up on my work and everything went well thereafter. I managed to complete my tasks. I found that a lot of students were divided when it came answering the forum discussion assignment on what would happen to bond prices if terrorism ended and countries adopted free trade. What's you take on this one?
This week I felt a combination between a little nervous and desperate. First the discussion was not easy and we are in the final push before finals, so I just want to make sure that I am well prepare and learning as much as I can to do well. I know that I can do it as long as I try hard.
Week 4: What an amazing week I have had. My children are on holiday, we have had a lot fun activities to do as a family. Holidays are the only times I get to spend with my children as I work from Monday to Friday. I have also taken some time off work, hence I am not as stressed as I am most of the times. However I tend to manage my stress well by practising. I really appreciate your feedback and the guidance given during this course work.
Terri Schiavo was 26 years old when she collapsed in her home and suffered acute hypoxia for several minutes. Slightly shy of a year after her injury, it was clinically determined that she was in a persistent vegetative state (Perry, Churchill, & Kirshner, 2005). There were no legal documents, such as an advance directive or living will, specifying the wishes for care under such circumstances. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, was designated as her legal guardian. The Schiavo case caught the public’s attention when her husband elected to remove her feeding tube in the mid 1900’s. He understood that there has never been a case of recovery after a year of being in a persistent vegetative state. One of the moral issues surrounding the case centered on the appropriateness of removing the life-sustaining feeding tube or maintaining it. Throughout the case, there has
The Terri Shiavo case had a significant impact on legislation. After numerous appeals in the court regarding both removing as well as reinstating ANH (Artificial Nutrition and Hydration), the in 2003, the Florida House and Senate passed "Terri's Law" which for the first time in history granted permission to governor to direct a specific medical act be carried out on the patient. In 2004, the Florida Supreme court declared "Terri's Law" as retroactive legislation citing separation of powers and citizens' right to privacy as justification.
The case of Nancy Cruzan has become one of the landmark cases for withdrawal of artificial nutrition and hydration because of important ethical issues the case brings to light. At the time of the case, the United States Supreme Court had already established the right of an individual to refuse medical treatment. This issue therefore is not novel to the Cruzan case. Furthermore, there was not any controversy over who was the appropriate decision maker for Nancy Cruzan. The significant issue that the Cruzan case did bring to the table of medical ethics regarded whether or not a substituted decision make could choose to withdraw artificial hydration and nutrition on behalf of another
They were the subjects of public disputes with family members, court systems, medical professionals, the media, and society at large. Terri Schiavo, Nancy Cruzan and Karen Ann Quinlan; their names are synonymous with permanent vegetative state (PVS). The amazing technological advancements in modern medicine has been credited with keeping persons alive who in times past would have died, therefore this is remarkable for countless families. In the cases of the Quinlan’s, the Cruzan’s and many like them, families members find it unbearable to witness loved ones who linger indefinitely in PVS with little or no chance for recovery. There are many like Terri Schiavo’s parents, who value the lives of their love ones no matter how limited their
The biggest challenge for me this week was revising my paper and allowing others to view and analyze my work since I find it hard to take criticism.
This week my mission is to respond with only love and give as much love as I can. I also hope to make a new friend. I was proud of myself for cleaning my room and my desk as well as making an exam study timetable. I attended most of my classes this week despite hardships I faced this week. I hope to improve on attending all my classes next week as well as reaching to class on
