Tempe City Council Meeting Analysis Every single General Plan is a document with the main purpose of guiding the development of a community. It is important because it will stimulate the public participation in the process of planning in the city and promote public health, safety and welfare. Usually, this plan has the range of around 20 years (Levy, 2011), but the City of Tempe General Plan has the more audacious range time of 30 years. The entire document is organized into six chapters to enhance three major themes: develop as a leader city in urban living, expand economy of urban activity centers, and promote a 20-minute city by improving connections between pedestrians, bikes and transit. It gives the general guidelines for the development of Tempe considering internal and external influences, like an umbrella document that supports other planning documents. It was made for a range of 30 years, but it has to be revised each 10 years, at least. All the process of making this plan was made in about two years of research, public meetings and agreement with the stakeholders (Community Development Department, 2013). The fourth chapter, Conservation Chapter, has the main purpose of engaging the community in sustainable practices and improves livability in face of economic and population growth. It is subdivided into three main elements, Conservation, Environmental Planning and Water Resources, which are in turn subdivided into many topics. This chapter is important as it
On Monday, April 13th, 2009, I visited the Culver City city council meeting, and found that they operate using a council-manager form of government. For a city with a population of about 38,000, this type of governmental structure is fairly common, and I was not surprised to see it in action in a community where the median household income is around $56,000 a year. Culver City is also a culturally rich community with a 60 percent Caucasian population, and a quarter of the residents are either of African American or Asian decent. The mayor, D. Scott Malsin, is one of five members on the council, and his term as mayor is on a rotating basis. Having been to a Hermosa Beach city council meeting with a similar council-manager structure, I knew
F.B. ‘Rusty’ Walker, IV represents Ward 4 and serves as President of the Gulfport City Council. Myles Sharp represents Ward 5, is an advocate for the advancement of local law enforcement. Robert ‘R.Lee’ Flowers represents Ward 6 and consistently works to keep the needs of Ward 6 before the city council meetings and readily advocate upon their behalf. Councilwoman Cara L. Pucheu represents Ward 7, is dedicated to being the voice advocating for her ward (City of Gulfport, 2015).
The meeting had an agenda that was published two days in advance per required by california state law. It was followed religiously by the council without deviation. They called the meeting to order and when everybody was quiet they started with the flag salute/presentation of the colors. They had the system of nominating ideas and seconding them to vote. They were speedy about it and there was no hesitation. However, out of the five city council members only three of the individuals so while the voted to vote they moved almost all of the votes to the next meeting when there would be more Council members.
“Many current discussions about sustainability focus on the ways in which human activity...can be maintained in the future without exhausting all of our current resources… there has been a close correlation between the growth of human society and environmental degradation - as communities grow, the environment often declines” (603).
In current days, in the face of governmental practices causing the destruction of Irala's landscape, soil nutrients, fishing population, and the slow deterioration of the
At the Dallas Center city council meeting topics discussed were the TreesPlease fiscal year, the city library financial summary, equipment upgrades from Minburn Communications on the water tower, southwest stormwater drainage improvements, trailhead restrooms project, water plant update, wastewater treatment plant project, ordinance actions, DNR mandates, firework restrictions, city reports, and public forums. I felt that the most important issue discussed was the fireworks restriction. Most topics discussed were just a summary of what stage of a process a project was on, however; the fireworks discussion was debated for awhile. They debated about what terminology to use for supervision of fireworks, they
On September 9, 2014 I attended the Glendale City Council meeting which was held at the Council Chamber which is located on the 2nd floor of the Glendale City Hall, Room 200, 613 East Broadway, Glendale, California. The meeting commenced at 6 p.m. and lasted for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Several policy proposals were made and discussed in this particular meeting. This paper is aimed at discussing the various policy proposals made and debated at this meeting with a view to establishing whether they are acceptable or unacceptable to the Glendale electorate. It is, however, essential to provide a brief background of the City of Glendale before embarking on a discussion of policy proposals.
The Dahlonega City Hall was crowded on the evening of March 1st 2010. The seats were full, except for at the very front, and the standing room was filled almost out the door. The crowd, mostly made up of students, leaned in to hear as the voices of the City Council members faded in and out of the faltering sound system. The six City Council members and the mayor sat along a bench as if they were the judges at a hearing. Because of the ongoing discussions and the crowd, I thought I had arrived a few minutes late; but I was able to find a seat in the front two rows. Despite how packed the small room was there were plenty of empty seats in the front. I had thought the meeting was well on its way by the way conversation was going and
Along with a thorough enough discussion of anything comes the inevitable unearthing of its strengths and weaknesses. The Portland Plan has a number of strengths: it is comprehensive, well thought out, inclusive, and should ultimately lead to a well-planned and sustainable city. How in-depth the Portland Plan is, is a testament to its preparedness to face any challenges to lead the Portland of today into becoming the Portland of tomorrow, as any potential question that may arise is likely addressed within the text of the plan. The mercurial nature of the plan is to its advantage, as anything not addressed within the text of the plan does not render the plan obsolete, but rather may be simply found by finding the popular opinion of the
In this group project, we discuss two cities – Houston and Dallas about their own background, which we called story and the comparison between them as well. Firstly, this paper will describe the Houston city’s history and background, by using the timeline, it is easy to consider the economy, politic, education and transportation for each of the city chronology. In this way, we can finally discuss the characteristic and opportunity for each of these two cities; thus, give them various suitable solutions for the future plan, which we called blue print, to help the city expansion.
I chose to attend a city council meeting for this assignment and was very surprised at what I witnessed. The city council served an important purpose and the meeting actually accomplished many important goals. Among the interesting things that I saw at the council meeting were the people who attended, the people who presented, the people who sat on the council, and the subjects that were being voted upon in the meeting.
One way to see public administration in action is by attending a city council meeting, whether it be in an urban or rural area, public administration still has a part in each event. As Kettl (2018; p. 244) referenced in his book, there is not a civil system that would be sustainable without strong leadership. This paper will discuss the author’s description, observation, and reflection during a city council meeting.
We should promote the conservation of our ecologies by reducing the amount of waste that goes directly into the environment and promoting green thinking and living all across the world. For instance, we could protect our environment by reducing the amount of cattle that feed in a certain area and by prohibiting the introduction of alien-invasive species as they deplete minerals and food in the soil for other plants to consume.
This essay will explore the social, ecological and economic values of green and blue spaces as a whole as many of the values interrelate and describe some of the approaches being used to improve access to nature. These approaches will be classified into three main categories: river restoration,
Environmental issues have been a cause of a lot of debate in the recent past. Governments and nongovernmental organizations have been in constant consultations on how to help protect the environment. Apparently, as a result of man’s many actions, the natural environment is getting torn apart so quickly that the coming generations will not enjoy this kind of environment, unless a
