When teens are tried they are either tried as juvenile or adults. If they are tried as minors then they go to a juvenile facility to get the help they need and go to school. Some teenagers are tried as adults and go directly to adult prisons just as any other person over eighteen would, however kids are not subject to the death penalty. Some kids may commit these crimes because they have undeveloped brains or mental issues ( Thompson 89). People are released from prison after short amounts of time because they committed a terrible crime as a minor instead of an adult. Most of these former criminals will repeat their actions putting our society at risk of assault, rape, or even murder. When someone commits a crime, and the crime is truly immoral and should deserve to pay the consequences no matter what their age is. Teens should be held accountable for their actions and tried as adults for heinous crimes they commit. …show more content…
In some cases teens do commit these crimes because of problems with brain development but that happens with adult too. In these few cases the kids should be sent to a mental hospital just like an adult would. However in the majority of the cases we see the kids undeveloped brains isn’t the case, they are fully choosing to commit these crimes despite their consciences . Jenkins explains, “If brain development was the reason, then teens would commit these crimes at roughly the same rate all over the world. They do not “ Kids don’t commit these crimes because of brain tissue damage or and related issues they commit these crimes because of other reasons admittedly it may play a role in a small amount of cases but for the most part it does not and it shouldn’t be used as an excuse to justify these horrifying crimes they
Other people argue that Juveniles may not have the mental capacity to know that this is wrong. This is, in fact, wrong in most cases. A child no matter what the age should know that killing or performing other atrocious acts on others is wrong. There are some exceptions such as mental illness and adverse effects from medications. According to https://flowpsychology.com/10-pros-and-cons-of-juveniles-being-tried-as-adults/, “because teenagers have full control over their thoughts and actions. If they do not have the moral compass instilled in them by that time, then they are very likely to commit more crimes.” This implies that, should teenagers not be tried as adults, they may never learn their lesson.Even if they don’t from harsher punishments; at least they will
Kenzie Houk had everything going for her. She was twenty-six, engaged to the love of her life, and was eight-and-a-half months pregnant. In the late winter of 2009, her four-year-old daughter waddled in her bedroom, hoping to surprise her mommy with a good morning smile. Instead, she found her mother with a bullet through her head. Eleven-year-old Jordan Brown, the soon-to-be stepson of Kenzie Houk, was arrested and charged with homicide, pulling the trigger before he went to school. There were two counts of homicide, one for Kenzie Houk and the other for her baby. Brown was tried in juvenile court and sentenced to a residential treatment facility until the age of twenty-one. To Kenzie Houk’s family, Brown’s sentence would never live up to that her four-year-old and seven-year old daughters would have to serve. “The day Kenzie was murdered, the whole family was served with a life sentence,” said Debbie Houk, the victim’s mother. “[Her daughters] are serving life right now. They are never going to see their mom” (Chen). Serious juvenile crimes, similar to this, cannot be properly justified in the juvenile justice system. Juveniles should be tried in the adult criminal court system for serious crimes because of the lack of severity in the juvenile court system, increased youth crime and recidivism rates, and the mental maturity of juvenile offenders.
In the article, ¨Kids Are Kids-Until They Commit Crime,¨ by Marjie Lundstrom explains that if kids/teens should be in prison for a crime. The crime kids commit depends on how big the crime really is then they should should be called adults. In the article there was examples of cases that kids commit of a twelve year old girl Lionel Tate who beat to death a six-year-old girl. Now Lionel will be charged as an adult and a first degree murder. Adolescent don't know what they get into until they commit the crime in jail they will be treated the same way as an adult. Sometimes they will regret it because they aren't teens no more they won't be able to do normal things anymore, no more toys, playing with friends their conscious won't be the
Teens who commit crimes shouldn’t be charged as adults. It also has to do with the crime, if a teen breaks into a car he/she shouldn’t be charged as adults they should be charged as juvenile. Kids will be kids they will make mistakes but doesn't mean they should have their life taken from them. In the article (Kids are kids-Until they commit crimes) says “It’s a glaring inconsistency that’s getting more glaring by the hour as children as young as twelve and thirteen are being charged as adults in America’s courts.” young teens are getting their life taken away from them, they haven’t learned right from wrong if the court system just gives them life.

The truth of the matter is a "kid", "teens" or however you want to call it; are not a grown ups we aren't given the same rights as grown-ups and majority of the time are ignored because we ar not grown-ups; however when it come to crimes we are most definitely taken into considerations. After considering both sides of the debate on juvenile justice, it is clear that juveniles should not face life without parole for the reason that we aren't taken in consideration most of the time as well as our immaturity.
7 Why should teens be trialed as Adults? By Breyonna Holloman English IV Honors Ronald Wilson Period 1 March 14, 2017 Teens should be trialed as adults because they are committing acts that they have knowledge that is wrong. Murderers, rapists, and other criminals are being released from jail every day after serving only very short and lenient sentences.
Imagine a loved one being ripped from your life through a violent crime only to learn that it was a juvenile who stole your loved one from you. Would you want this juvenile to be prosecuted as an adult or would you want them to serve a child sentence? When it comes to the topic of violent crime, most of us will readily agree that those who commit the crime should be persecuted. Where this argument usually ends, however, is on the question of juveniles committing the crime. Whereas some are convinced that they are unable to make rational decisions.
As noted before, children are easily affected by the things they are exposed to. Notably, a boy had stolen a gun and his behavior was something that was hard to control, also falling into a bad path (A&E). This particular suspect again commited murder and was known for his odd behavior. It is most likely that the kid’s behavior came because of outside factors. Some cases are in fact devastating but juveniles do have reason to not be tried as adults, despite what they may have done as
There are many controversial issues in the United States the idea that children of ages 10-16 years old should be tried as adults. I say that if the child is capable of knowing what they are doing at the moment, they should be punished the same, not given light punishments just because of their age, many people may not agree with this statement because they think that children are rebels and if you warn them once they will understand the next time. Yet, some individuals will not care what is told to them and will keep on doing what they want because they believe that they will never get caught for their wrongdoings. Many youngsters are stubborn and do not like to admit that they are wrong, so they fall into the wrong path because it is easier and faster to get what they want.
A financial big increase of teenagers are creating a tremendous increase of crime, towards their sentences. Within the juvenile justice system, juveniles are unfairly sentenced. If punished for a low amount of time, they could learn that it's not bad being in the adult system. Juveniles should not be punished leaniately, but they earn more than what they deserve for the felony they engage in. They should be well disciplined for what they done equally, towards the crime they are responsible for.
It may be understandable when they do small crimes such as theft. Maybe one is not able to afford things and kids in their early-mid teens are still in that mindset that they should be “in style” and in result, tend to steal things. Yet, if kids/teens are convicted of murder, rape, or even assault, they should be tried as an adult because actions like those are inhumane and unreasonable for one to strip away someone’s life or even dignity. Murder, rape, and assault are big crimes. The reason why they are big crimes is because they are hurting another person, they're breaking laws.
Juveniles should not be tried and sentenced as adults because their brains are not fully matured thus making the process impossible to undergo the experiences of being tried and sentenced as an adult. The juvenile justice system needs to be revised and start to work towards helping the juveniles find the right path and not setting them up to fail. Some people might say that these adolescents need to just fall silent and do the time in adult prison. The problem is, youth cannot do the same time like an adult would, because they are not adults, no matter how much society would like them to carry themselves as so, they simply cannot. The public should put themselves in the juvenile’s shoes and become aware of all the trauma and abuse the juveniles live through while being tried and sentenced as an adult.
Furthermore, teens always find a way to get away with certain problems, even if they are small they still try avoid the consequences. In other words they are trying to get the easy way of their problems. But this may not be the best choice because they can be making matters worse. Besides, teens who commit crimes should be tries as adults, the reason being that if they do not get punished then
How can such youngsters execute such a heinous crime and end up deciding where they are going to spend their time for doing the crime. Should teens and children be charged as a crime seen as an adult crime. The reasoning of having a juvenile system is for young folks that commit crime that may not get away with a long detention and just get away with twenty five years. I bare with the situation of the crime committed, but the case of committing murder I do believe they should be sentence with an adult crime. With first degree murder planning out a plan and committing the murder.
