Although statistics have shown a decrease, the number of teen pregnancy in the U.S. is still relatively high compared to the rest of the world. Sexual health is one of the top priorities in early adolescence health in the United States. Consequences of having sex at a young age generally results in unsafe sex practices. The consequences can be due to the lack of knowledge about sex education, and access to birth control/contraception (NIH, 2005). Due to the lack of knowledge and access to birth control, adolescents involve in risk taking when they start to explore sexual intimate relationships.

Teenagers have little awareness about how to prevent becoming pregnant. In a news article by Daniel Armbuster, he said, “It’s all about healthy relationships. For many years teen pregnancy has been a national social problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the 2011 birth rate for teens was 31.3 births per 1000 women aged 15–19, a record low for the United States. However, there are many ways to reduce the amount of teenage pregnancies (Trudeau). The United States has a problem of teenage pregnancy occurring with the most occurring in the capital Washington D.C. where there are a diverse group of teenagers (Dawani). This shows that our nation has a problem of teenage pregnancy, but the most is in a well civilized area in our nation. Studies have shown that The highest rate of teenage pregnancy in a developed country occurs in the United States with the rate of teenagers being twice as likely to give birth compared to teens in Canada and ten times as likely as teens in Switzerland showing that a diverse population has an effect on social behaviors (Dawani). Our nation needs to find ways to decrease the alarming statistic. Studies have shown there has been a decrease in teenage pregnancies.A recent article has shown the teen pregnancy rate is down nearly 40 percent and the teen birth rate has been cut by one-third since the early 1990s, but the problem is still occurring today (Dawani). Teenage pregnancy in the United States is a problem with many causes such as lack of education from parents and the education system, media influences, and the cost of contraception used and many solutions to stop the epidemic.

Teen pregnancy is a very controversial social issue and the vast majority of Americans consider the outrageous rate of teen pregnancies a severe issue, certainly a problematic occurrence that is believed to be a moral decline in our country. Teenagers are physiologically capable of reproducing but not emotionally or financially prepared to be parents at such a tender age. Through various research studies a plethora of determinants has pin pointed teens unprecedented pregnancies. One cause of this problem is the apparent indication of social separation or disadvantage. Within this issue you would find poverty, single parent households, educational disadvantages on the parents behalf, a lack family/parental support, and unemployment. A child’s educational performance, inappropriate sexual acts, and inferior apprehensions about their futures play a vital role in teen pregnancies as well. Amongst the listed disadvantages the three that take precedent are lacks of family communication, sexual abuse, and poverty. Furthermore, teen mothers do not fit the ideal ideology of the normative scheduling of motherhood, therefore, ultimately resulting in negative consequences for them and society. What needs to be understood is, as to why the numbers of teens are becoming parents at such a vernal age.

Many teenagers are now becoming parents these days. In fact, from the ages of 15-19, there were 249,078 babies born in the United States. (1) Many of these unwanted pregnancies can be prevented with the help sexual education. Yes, in some schools there is sexual education. But, if it was in every school many of these could have possibly been prevented. At the school I attend, sexual education is not offered. We are faced with several unwanted pregnancies, and with sexual education, I think these could be prevented.

In Particular, teenage mothers are more likely to have a poor eating diet, become anemic, and not take the adequate amount of prenatal multivitamins. The mother may experience high blood pressure, which can lead to preterm birth, low birth weight of the baby, as well as passing it onto the infant. Lack of education of safe sex causes misinformation about reproduction about how one can get pregnant. It also can lead to STDs such as Chlamydia, HIV, Gonorrhea, AIDS, and more. By lacking this education whether from home, or school many teens go without knowledge of proper safe sex practices. Which in turn some believe the only way to not get pregnant is to practice abstinence only. Also most parents, because of this would like to believe that their child isn't having sexual intercourse until marriage. The United States has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the world. 3 to 10 teen American girls will get pregnant at least once before the age of 20 (11 Facts). Most of these pregnancies are unplanned. Why is there so many unplanned pregnancies? Its simple teens do not realize the mess they are getting themselves into once they have unprotected sex. They have unprotected sex because there is no way they can get protection without adults wondering what they are gonna be using protection for. But that is the problem teenagers cannot confront their parents or any adults about getting protection for themselves. Instead, they go and have sex not realizing the risks they can face. On the other hand, everything is more updated and this generation is way more advanced than any generation. Adults should really start giving some sex education classes since kids are in 6th grade; because that is when most girls start getting their menstrual cycle and when both boys and girls hormones are everywhere. Schools should consider having sex education classes for their teens. Sometimes teens will not talk with their parent about this topic since it is uncomfortable so the school should try talking to them about it. “90% of Americans believe that sex education should be taught in schools, meanwhile 82% support comprehensive programs that teach students about both abstinence and methods to prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (Parks 73).” Having more conversations about this topic will decrease the rate in teen pregnancies and will change the lives of many teens.

Some causes of Teen pregnancy are absent parenting, lack of knowledge, substance abuse, living in poverty and peer pressure. The number of teens within the ages of 14-19 has substantially decreased over the last several years. While examining the causes of teen pregnancy, new methods of prevention can be defined. If there are different methods identified for preventing teen pregnancy than the number of teens can go down more.

In just one year approximately 750,000 teens get pregnant in the United States. Of those pregnancies, 85% are unplanned (Inez 2016). The question is why do these young women end up pregnant. The leading causes to teen pregnancy is due to the pressure that is put on girls, the lack of sex education, and the use of alcohol.

Teen pregnancy is difficult for girls because of the pain. Teenage girls go through so much pain when comes to childbearing, the carrying of a baby. Teenagers have a higher chance of getting an illness or pain during pregnancy, according to Denise Mann from WebMD. Teenagers are at a higher risk of a dangerous medical condition called Preeclampsia, which is the result of high blood pressure. “Preeclampsia is a serious condition that develops during pregnancy and is potentially fatal.” (Mann,1). This means the teenage mother is at risk of this condition and there a lot more out there that can harm her. With this being the reason of her putting herself in a position of carrying a baby it exposes her to more pain or conditions which can lead into any pregnancy complications.
