The teenage transition in stories The coming-of-age experience is different for everybody and comes with different components. What was a component you experienced while becoming an adult? Coming of age is when a teen changes into an adult. Two components I decided to write about were loss and perception of parents. The examples I will use are Will from the book Long Way Down and Juliet from Romeo and Juliet. Will loses his brother at the beginning of the story and it follows his path to revenge and a change of heart too. Juliet has kind and caring parents at the beginning of the story, but by the end, they change in her eyes. Loss is a terrible experience for anybody, but it hurts more when it is close family. In the book Long Way Down, Will …show more content…
The coming-of-age experience happened when he was in the elevator and learned the hard truth about killing and the rules he follows. In the elevator, he meets his Dad and other family and friends who were killed because of gang violence which makes him realize that if he kills Riggs he will be killed because it is a cycle. In the story he sees Shawn and wants to talk to him but can't so he said “Confess that I was scared that I needed to know I was doing the right thing. Right?” (Reynolds 295-296) This is when he finally breaks and starts to tear up and realize what he is doing is wrong so he changes his attitude and is very mature about how to handle situations. This component of coming of age is the perception of parents because in the story Romeo and Juliet, Juliet’s parents turn on her and cause Juliet to become more mature and make her own decisions after her parents turn on her, in the end, Juliet marries Paris when she is opposed to it and is only doing it because of Friar Lawrence plan. The event that makes Juliet cautious of her parents is when they begin to force Juliet to marry a man she does not care
Growing Up in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet The characters Romeo and Juliet in the play of the same name by William Shakespeare are rather immature as the play commences. Due to the love that develops between them, the feud between their two families and their actions, they mature and reach a stage upon which they have become independent individuals, taking their own decisions. The extraordinary about their maturation is the short time period in which it takes place, from the beginning to the end of the play only three days pass. Romeo appears rather immature at the beginning of the play as he looses himself in the self-indulgent and hopeless love towards Rosaline.
When picking a scene to analyze in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, it is easy to go straight to the temptingly classic and romantic balcony scene. Especially in the case of Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation Romeo + Juliet, the director gives viewers plenty to talk about with his innovative staging that puts Romeo and Juliet on the same level. However, a more brief scene that gives way to important insight about the film is Romeo and Juliet’s wedding. In Shakespeare’s play the audience does not actually witness the wedding, so Luhrmann had total creative freedom in what he wanted this scene to look like. When the two young lovers finally reach the end of the aisle together, they quickly evoke the image of children playing dress up. Romeo’s suit is old-fashioned and too big for him, as if he borrowed it from his father’s closet. Juliet wears a 1950’s style halter dress, hanging on her like a costume. Her hair is messily pulled into an updo with strands hanging down by her face, making her look like a kid who has tried to do a fancy new hairdo but does not quite know how and could probably use a haircut besides that. Attire aside, Romeo and Juliet just have very young-looking faces. The actors portraying them, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, are ages 21 and 17 and you can tell by their bright faces and softened features that they are still quite young to be getting married (Rolling Stone). Their clothes and faces combined
Love and loss are profound experiences that shape our transition from childhood to adulthood. Coming of age can be defined as the transition from childhood into adulthood. Two things that people go through when they come of age are experiencing love and experiencing loss. Will is the main character in “Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds, and he experiences loss throughout the book. The main character of “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare is Romeo, and he experiences a lot of romantic love throughout the book.
He has grown in the fact that he has found true love and would do anything for Juliet instead of just wanting to be in love like the beginning of the book. As you can see Romeo has experienced love and has grown to feel love and have true love. The two coming-of-age components I talked about were loss and love. Will experienced loss when he lost his brother and had to go from a kid to an adult. Will was forced into adulthood, he had to follow the
When does one really become a mature person? In the book Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, maturity has changed dramatically throughout the book and it affected both Romeo and Juliet emotionally. Maturity during the Shakespearean time was different then maturity in the present time because when you are a teenage in Shakespearean time you are more likely to get married and or have kids. Romeo and Juliet go through lots of maturities because they get married at a young age and their families are longtime rivals.
Maturity is not really known throughout this story which would be Romeo and Juliet, and especially through the main characters. This could also be said for the majority of the characters as well. The characters that will be focused on will be Romeo and Juliet though. There are many reasons to why the characters Romeo and Juliet have not yet matured much throughout this story. The story Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy and is about two lovers Romeo and Juliet that fall in love and later blossoms into forbidden love due to the fact that these two are from two feuding families.
This story “Romeo and Juliet” started off as a very childish relationship. They were in love the moment they made eye contact. Romeo and Juliet wanted to get married three days after they met which was completely impractical and also very immature for them to do that. Although the relationship at first was kiddish throughout the story they both matured.
At the beginning of the story, Juliet is very obedient, only doing what she is told, whereas at the end of the story she breaks her parents' trust and lies to them. Although this is not a very good thing, it taught her how to fight for what she loves, and how to come back after having a disagreement and these skills will stay with her throughout her coming of age process. Juliet experiences love when Romeo is outside of her bedroom at night, telling Juliet a love story about
Although some people say that maturity is boring, it’s important, because there are some objectives to be mature in, and in relationships wise maturity is a very important factor in relationships. Maturity has some objectives to be more mature about. For instance, I had a friend named katia that loved having fun all the time, but she had an interview in order to a job. She didn’t how to be serious about the interview. In effect, she had to learn to be mature if she liked it or not, because this interviews are what we need to take serious in life.
“Maturity is the ability to think, speak and act [one’s] feelings within the bounds of dignity. The measure of [one’s] maturity is how spiritual [one becomes] during the midst of [his/her] frustrations”. In William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, two teenage, star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, make decisions that lead them to confront many abhorrent and unsatisfactory events. In addition, not only do these inadequate experiences lead to their lamentable deaths, but also contribute immensely to the lovers’ development of maturity and mental growth. These inevitable experiences test and exhibit their high degrees of competence towards these situations.
Teen rebellion Teen rebellion is a act seen everyday for some families such as Romeo and Juliet's family. Romeo and Juliet rebelled against their families to follow their hearts and to be with their loved one. Another couple who rebelled against other’s opinions to be with their loved one is Rose and Jack from “Titanic”. Both couples loved each other, but then had to sacrifice their lives for each other.
Teen Rebellion is one of the most popular trends on these days. Also there are too many movies and books about it, like “Romeo & Juliet” by William Shakespeare. This book(play) can also be compare to the movie “Titanic” for many reasons. The reasons why they are kind of identical are that both couples were teens and love each other against others. Also because at the end someone dies because of that love.
Juliet matured in many ways as well. Her shift in maturity changed after meeting Romeo. In the beginning of the play, Juliet kept doing everything her father told her and the future he had decided for her she said fine, okay. When her mother told her of Paris, she said, “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move;/ But no more will I endart mine eye” (I., iii, 97-98).
Juliet matures from being obedient and relying on everyone else's opinion to a grown woman who will not listen to her father's wishes if they will make her sin. Also if her father's wishes will make her be disloyal to her husband and also to Paris because she doesn’t love him. She doesn’t believe in marrying for money or for an arranged marriage. Romeo matures from thinking he is in love to realizing what love is and making choices that will benefit them and that will be faithful to his wife's wishes like the choice of keeping their marriage a
In today’s world, it is common to see teen rebellion in our society. It is common in movies, songs, and other things too, because it signifies that teen rebellion is something teens are going through nowadays. We could learn that teen rebellion is a normal thing to go through therefore it doesn't mean they will always act like that. In this essay I will be talking about two examples of teen rebellion . “Romeo and Juliet” is a story with a lot of examples of teen rebellion.
