Communication The way in which people communicate is as varied as the languages spoken throughout the world. People cannot just exchange a few words, there must be an understanding and acceptance of these variations or there will be a breakdown in the communication process. This is shown in the interactions between men and women, people of different cultures and even when exposed to a new environment. Verbal communication is the form that is most easily recognized. People can hear and see this form of communication without even physically experiencing a part of the conversation. When

Were someone to act in this way toward a man here in the United States he would probably not enjoy the reaction. This is why when dealing with people from other cultures one needs to be aware of their beliefs and customs and not jump to conclusions immediately based-off their actions. The United States is a wonderful place to experience diverse communication because there are so many cultures living so close together. The ability to immerse ourselves in the cultures that thrive in America is ours to take. Learning from them and growing one’s knowledge of how the world communicates is an essential part of ones evolution in this big world that grows smaller every day. Learning the verbal and nonverbal way that people communicate in one’s environment is the key to one’s success. When one faces the challenges that the opposite sex can present to each other, and learn to communicate effectively with one another one can begin to see the world from a different perspective. This different perspective can oftentimes be a better way of viewing things then the same old way that has always been used. In the same respect gaining an appreciation and understanding of the way other cultures communicate can give one another tool to use when tackling problems. Sometimes good old American ingenuity might not be the answer. Being able to understand another culture may bring in fresh ideas that have
Different social, professional and cultural contexts may affect relationships and the way people communicate due to of a lack of understanding or knowledge of one another’s background and culture. This could be through their race, religion, ethnicity or where they come from. Each one of these can have similar or very different ways to communicate. For example
1. What is the one topic that really stood out to you in Chapter 9- Collaborating in Teams? Why? Chapter nine in our textbook addressed collaborating in teams. This chapter did an excellent job of informing the reader about several key elements pertaining to teamwork. Topics like elements of teamwork, team dynamics and how to improve them, and ways to enhance teamwork. After completing the homework for this week in conjunction with our required reading assignments one aspect of our reading really stood out to me. Learning about the differences between groups and teams in the workplace was very interesting to me. As learned, there are several fundamental differences between groups and teams. Some of the components of a group are: roles
The most important thing people need to realize is that men and women come from different worlds. Women’s way of communicating is like living on the beach, open and carefree. Men’s way of communication, on the other hand, is the opposite. It is like living in a cave, quiet and cooped up. Accepting that there are differences, such as the way men and women listen, act, and sometimes the level of emotions expressed will help each understand how to communicate better with one another. Noted linguist, Dr. Deborah Tannen, studied this problem. In her article, “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why It’s So Hard For Men And Women to Talk to Each Other?” She explains the differences, and shows how problems go away once the differences are understood. If everyone would learn these differences, life would be so much easier.
As the progression of our project started to gain momentum we created the presumption that we were going to continue our work without facing any obstacles, but that was soon proven to be false. As we continued with our project we were faced with some major obstacles affecting our steady flow of producing work and maintaining a well organized structure to maximize the amount of work being produced. In response to the obstacles we were faced with I believe that the most impacting obstacle we had to deal with was the process of maintaining a steady flow of work being produced in spite of the fact that people were leaving and switching out of the class because of the reaction some parents had to the subject of our work, such as the LGBTQ group.
It is the differentiation of people, which often attracts them to one another; however, without the proper tools and understanding of communication theory, distrust and bigotry will occur. There can be drawbacks to this intermingling; in fact, it can often be difficult for those who experience a language barrier or cultural disparities to communicate effectively (Wood, 2015). Learning to embrace differences between individuals can create lasting beneficial relationships. Furthermore, Tome (2014) stated “the most central feature of human interaction is that it requires mutual adaptation. A simple conversation cannot be carried on unless communicators use language that is understandable by both, take turns speaking, and use similar rates of
The results of the assessment did surprise me, I wasn’t aware that my problem-solving skills were also my conflict resolution style. As a collaborating conflict style user, I assertively attempt to resolve the conflict with the best solution agreed upon by all parties. This style is also known as the problem-solving style and if that doesn’t work my next step is the forcing style. If they can’t come up with a solution, I do.
Working together toward a common goal. But what is the goal? Providing the client with the best possible care. This is not accomplished by nursing alone. Reaching that goal requires a great team and a successful collaboration. What makes it work?
No matter what the age, the gender, or the culture, communication is a large portion of each of our lives. Communication is an ingredient of everyday life and each culture plays a significant role in how one learns to interact with another by means of verbal and nonverbal communication. While shaking someone’s hand might be normal and a gesture of acceptance in American culture, this can be considered a sign of disrespect or even being rude in another. Communication between two people of different cultures can go unpleasantly if one does not gain the knowledge of what is acceptable and not acceptable in the others culture. Learning the do’s and don’ts of cultures different than our own can broaden our relationships and strengthen our ability to communicate amongst those who do not share the same beliefs. Let’s take into consideration the cultural differences of communication between the United States and India. By learning the
meetings or teams influence collaborative working and cohesiveness during decision making and conflict resolution. In order for the researcher to determine what variables are associated with increased collaboration and efficiency, primary data, secondary data, and exploratory studies should be used to develop an appropriate research question.
Other cultures tend to use an indirect form of communication where their true response is embedded in the presentation of the message. Accents and fluency problems also cause barriers as it is hard to understand someone with a thick accent or to speak with someone who has little knowledge and working use of a foreign language that another team member might use. The group member might have an idea of how to say something in their head but can’t find the words in another language to share the idea (Brett, Behfar, and Kern, 2006).
Firstly, I have understood more scientifically about key terms related to intercultural communication that I have never known before, notably cultural patterns such as beliefs, values, norms and social practices, and non-verbal intercultural communication. Moreover, this course is of a great help to me for improving my cross-cultural communication skills. Particularly, through non-verbal cues that I have learned during this course, I could effectively communicate with a Korean who cannot speak English by using gestures and postures. For me, this is the most unforgettable memory in the outdoor activity about non-verbal communication during this course. In addition, this course has provided me a better understanding of how cultural patterns can affect language and intercultural communication as well. For example, in Vietnam, the value of respect for the older people is very highly appreciated in Vietnamese daily life and also held with a high degree of intensity (Lustig and Koester, 2010). Therefore, when Vietnamese communicate with elders, it is impolite to directly look into their eyes; and it is obligatory to put respectful words like “ạ” at the end of every
In society today, people have friends that belong to numerous diverse cultural groups. When it comes to meeting new people from unique cultural groups, the form of communication are all different. Those that do not use the correct form of communication when encountering new people from different ethnicity, it can lead to misunderstanding and tremendous conflicts. For instance, I am Vietnamese and in our culture, the way people communicate determines their characteristics, personalities, and how educated they are. This is extremely important in my culture since it reveals how we treat adults and if we admire them or not. On the other hand, my friend Yary, who is Cambodian, her way of communicating defines how respectful one is, based on their tone. The Cambodian and the Vietnamese’s lifestyle tends to have multiple similarities, but also have a few differences about certain topics. When it comes to communicating, the situational context, physical appearance, and self presentation all plays a different role in every heritage. To learn extend my knowledge about different cultures and their way of communicating, I interviewed my friend Yary, to compare and contrast our way of communicating through our culture.
“Two heads are better than one.” We’ve all heard the old adage encouraging teamwork. Of course with more minds set on a specific goal, more ideas you access. So, we can finish our works on time. The process of working collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal is what we call teamwork. When people work in a team, they will try to cooperate with each others, use their individual skills and providing constructive feedback. When a team works well together as a unit they are able to accomplish more than its individual members can do alone. Different members apply different skills, they are often able to come up with a more effective solution than one person working on the same problem. Teamwork is absolutely fundamental for teams to work effectively. A team combines individual s.trengths with a shared commitment to performance, it’s not just about getting on well together. That’s why I like to work in a team. Only when joined the strengths ang skill of individual team members with
The purpose of this study is to identify establishing teamwork is difficult in an organization. The study has partially discussed the problems and consequences a manager faces at different levels as the team evolves in an organization. The study takes through all the major aspects of team and its evolvement, managerial-roles, specifications, pros and cons, internal and external environment, human-behavior, culture in an organization and its effects on teamwork. Study has also briefed few management theorists who have their approaches on teamwork and exampled few organizations found relevant in the context of teamwork.
Non-verbal communication is not universal and often misunderstood. While understanding another culture dialect or accent appears difficult, the effects of non-verbal communication, directly or indirectly, is equally difficult and sometimes convey as offensive to someone from another culture. Although language has always been the most important form of communicating, this paper will explain how intercultural communication is the most vital part of human communicating through channels of different cultures, both verbal and nonverbal.
