The key to success lies in the ability to collaborate with others, which requires interpersonal skills. Throughout my profession, I have maintained a positive rapport with colleagues, parents, students, and administration. I attribute these productive partnerships partly to my attitudes about and toward others. By effectively communicating, listening, and questioning, coupled with a friendly demeanor, others find me approachable and a person with whom they easily work. These traits will contribute to my achievement as a literacy coach if selected for this position. As a highly effective teacher, I communicate clearly. From planning lessons to giving instructions, I disseminate information adeptly. In my position as Teacher Mentor Coordinator, I train new mentors, who must understand many issues facing new teachers. Therefore, I must inform mentors with the utmost care. I plan every detail of a training, recording all talking points so that when mentors meet with mentees, their time will …show more content…
My training as a teacher mentor has helped me hone my listening expertise. When working with another person, I give my utmost attention to the other person. By putting aside everything else to give someone a few minutes of my time, I use my listening skills to help others problem-solve. When training new mentors, I lead an exercise in active listening that helps mentors understand how to focus on the other person’s needs. In my daily life, I follow the active listening process. This skill has already helped me as a literacy coach during my summer school position when I plan and organize professional development for summer school teachers. Last year, for example, I worked with one teacher who struggled to identify common core rubrics in a project. Through effective listening, I recognized a need and offered advice, which resulted in setting high standards for student
Attached is a completed application for the mentoring program I would like to pursue. Not sure if I have overstepped my boundary, but I have discussed this with my RA, Nick Lalpuis, and he supports the proposal. I also discussed this with Laura Watson this morning and she is in agreement with it as well. Please advise if there are any additional documentation or steps I need to go through to get
It is important that I build positive effective relationships with the children, young people and adults that I work with, to do this I need to be able to demonstrate and model effective communication skills in my dealings with others. I must always consider how I approach people and also how I respond to them. I will
God placed a desire in her heart to make a difference in the lives of children specifically to help heal and show love to those who are products of broken homes such as single parent homes. This has led Keah to become the COO of Sage Kids. She diligently works alongside the mentors of Sage Mentoring to create programs that are similar but uniquely formatted just for the children of the mothers who receive mentoring through Sage Mentoring. It is clear to Keah that God has called her for a purpose of nurturing, teaching and building up the children who at times are the forgotten, overlooked and fighting an uphill battle due to the circumstances they find themselves surrounded
Understand how to facilitate the learning and development needs of children and young people through mentoring 1.1 - Explain the interpersonal and communication skills required to facilitate the learning and development needs of children and young people Effective listening skills Effective listening skills are essential if you want the person speaking to feel what they are saying is important and valued. We can show that we are listening by giving eye contact and by nodding and giving short answers that don’t interrupt the person talking, for example, saying yes, right, ok. When someone knows we are listening it boosts self esteem and confidence. Open questioning techniques Open questioning is a good way of keeping a conversation going to show that you are interested in what they are saying. When we ask these question we use words such as were, when, how, why, for example why did Paul do that .
After completing my Mentoring Confidence Inventory, I learned that my lowest score, 18 out of 25, was on the communicating effectively category. I was not surprised on scoring low on this category. Friends and family members often tell me that I need to work better on communicating effectively and listening to other’s perspectives. Under the communicating effectively category, there is a statement claiming, “I have effective listening skills.” I rated myself a 3 out of 5 when reading this. Sometimes when having hot topic discussions with my peers, I react abruptly to something someone has said that I do not agree with. I recognize that this is not a great way to respond and it does not constitute effective listening. I get so caught up in

The reading spoke about building quality youth mentoring relationships as the quantity of mentoring programs grow at a rapid level. The reading provided a break down on how mentoring relationships can effectively work when the mentees aren’t going through vigorous trainings as they once did. As I read it, I thought about my first week, how it went, and how I can be a better mentor to the girls I will be seeing twice a week for the next few months.
The theme of mentoring stood out to me in this week’s readings, and lecture. Mentoring is an important process that impacts all involved through connecting on a topic and also on a personal level. In this commentary I will first reflect on how my college mentors helped me. Second I will address if and when it is appropriate to be a mentor to elementary and middle school students. Lastly I will discuss how I encourage students in their creativity, and ideas for the future.
From the past year of joining the EY College Map Mentoring Program, I have learn numerous things about the program. I have learn to never give up in life, study skills, advice from my mentors. They have given me advice on Financial Aid, assist me to learn about scholarships and applying toward the next step of Education. Ey Mentors has help me so much in tutoring for tests, especially the Act and Sat. For my first time I had achieve a composite score of 18 and a 24 in reading. Which I really love. The mentors made learning educational and fun. I learn that I don’t have to stress about some things in life. I learn to work ahead of time and work on my Time-Management skills. I must make time in College for studying and having fun. It’s always
As a recent new graduate I have had several different mentors through the process of obtaining my license. The one that stands out the most is one of my coworkers who I worked under during the new graduate residency program. This individual was not only my preceptor, but a mentor to me. She had qualities that I aspire to have as I grow as a nurse. She was a leader, loved to learn and teach, encouraged, and was very supportive. She is one of a few nurses that I can always turn to when I need assistance and she is always willing to teach and help.
It is difficult for me to talk about him in this particular area. Unfortunately, I have not seen every detail of his performance now that he is a mentor. Based on my observations, the only thing I can think of to measure his performance in this area is by looking at the results and measuring the performance of all the new hires that I know he has mentored. Unfortunately this results have been a little mixed. A few of the new hires he has trained have either left the company , not perform well, or there are some that are performed really
I believe a Peer Mentor should make it his/her assignment provide support, encouragement, and information to new students. I was attracted to this position because I believe I can successfully do so by listening, comprehending, questioning, clarifying and give constructive feedback to fellow students with any type of situation they are dealing with. A peer mentor is someone who leads by example, a role model to others. Almost every job I have ever had, I had to demonstrate skills a mentor has to possess. Being a basketball coach for young kids as well as a Security Guard, has taught me important skills like sensibility, confidence, social skills and reliability. Furthermore, by being approachable, open minded and willing to put myself in others
The aim of this essay is to discuss on how the reflection on mentorship will be undertaken, how and why the model of reflection will be used and the importance of confidentiality. I will reflect the mentorship by ensuring that the mentee during clinical practice is put at ease throughout the learning experience of four weeks (Quinn, and Hughes 2007, p. 29). Also, I will use the principle of Kolb’s learning cycle as my model of reflection because reflecting is an essential element of learning. As I am the mentor, I will follow this cycle in a clockwise direction with Jude, so she would have to reflect on the skills learnt by reviewing the whole situation (Kolb’s learning cycle 1984 in Rose and Best 2005, p.129). This would enable Jude to

In the following assignment the author will critically explore, discuss, reflect upon and evaluate mentorship within clinical nursing placements. With particular reference to learning disabilities and respite care, the author will look at the needs and benefits of mentorship, as well as the problems and constraints, especially being in such a specialised service. The author will explore the area of orientation, looking at why it is such an important aspect of the whole placement area. Once these aspects have been explored, the author will go on to discuss the placement, the problems that have been encountered throughout and the ways in which these can be addressed effectively, to ensure that they are reduced and expelled as much as
