Tattoos Are a Means of Artistic Expression
From the time of my early teenage years I have had the strong desire to have a tattoo. Growing up in an age that saw the tattoo become mainstream, I never really entertained the thought “Are tattoos a means of artistic expression”. After reading the article “On Pins and Needles Defending Artistic Expression” by Carol Rose, which was posted to Boston.com on April 8, 2010, I asked myself that very question. Carol Rose is a lawyer as well as a journalist and she currently serves as the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts. In her piece she makes the claim that “the right to tattoo is part and parcel of our right to artistic expression” (Rose37). No one argues that
City units were dispatched to a call of a disturbance at 938 Water St., apartment 206. The RP said they did not see the disturbance/argument, but could hear yelling and banging around. The RP said that they went in the hall and could see the front door to the apartment smashed in. The RP also said that the male half is named Gary and owns the Tattoo parlor down stairs around the block. The RP advised that the female half is named Tiara.
In an article written by Carol Rose, who is a lawyer and journalist and serves as executive director of the Americal Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, she discusses the right to free expression by the way of tattooing. In the article "On pins and needles defending artistic expression" she expands on how, even though tattooing is an ancient form of art that is practiced by many people, it was still illegal in many states throughout America as of the date of the article being written.
Tatoos are extremely controversial. Some people love them and some hate them. The two articles discuss both sides. "Tattos: The Ultimate in Expression" is best supported because it gives several examples from real world experience.
Tattoos are a source of self-expression, and there are countless of ideas that one can forever ink on their body. There are people whose life story is captured and told by the inking that scatters their physique, yet there are others who believe this is a representation of a bad character. When I began digging, I knew that starting off with an individual's clashing experience with their tattoo would be
The freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment preserves not only an individual’s right to engage in communication, but as will be presented, also their means to do so. Accordingly, tattoos, and by extension the act of
On the most basic level, tattoos acted as a badge of social and cultural differentiation that separated the tattooed from the non-tattooed. On a deeper level, however, social and cultural homogeneity did not unite the tattooed, for the subject matter and aesthetic style of the tattoos created a fault-line that divided the classes. (Caplan, 2000, 148)
“Be a good looking corpse. Leave a good looking tattoo.” This quote was said by Ed Westwick, when talking about a tattoo artist leaving a tattoo on their canvas. A tattoo artist is someone who creates permanent images or words. This process is done by injecting ink under the skin. The needle doesn’t go in as deep as a regular shot would. This doesn’t mean it's painless, its more of an annoying vibration from the machine. A career as a tattoo artist is the ideal choice for someone who likes excitement, enjoys a flexible schedule, and wants to be personally fulfilled.
A tattoo artist, or also known as tattooer, or tattooist makes personal tattoos on people's skin to permanently stay. As their day starts, they clean and sterilize the equipment to make sure that no harm or disease can come from the art they give. They usually come in an hour or two early to organize the needles and tubes to make sure they have everything they are going to need for the day in the correct spots. Typically, the artist is set up in a building or booth, but can also be set up wherever they see fit to give tattoos to any customer.
In some situations a tattoo is to represent something or to remember something or someone; a tattoo can actually have a lot of meaning and be in the place it's in for a great reason. My boyfriend Trevor Mucci said “I got a tattoo because I lost somebody important to me and this way the person is with me at all times. Yes my tattoo is very meaningful I lost my mother to cancer at a young age so I got the breast cancer ribbon over my heart , Watching my mother battle the way she did made me inspired to get the bible verse Phil 4:13 and the placement of my tattoo is on my chest which is over my heart so the placement is very meaningful” Ashlynn Mucci, Trevor Mucci’s little sister said “I got it for my mom It's a breast cancer ribbon and boxing
‘Tattoos: The women’s revolutionary aesthetics’, ‘You will never regret it’ documentaries and ‘Thinking and Inking’ scholar article portray the significance and the symbolism of tattoos. People inked tattoos on their skin for meaningful purpose or simply for mere pleasure. Women received numerous criticisms especially on the art they inked on their skin. In the documentary, ‘You will never regret it’, the individuals did not regret inking tattoos on their skin as it carried great stories. In the ‘Inking and Thinking’ article it shows honoured students do think of the impact it will have on future job opportunities. High percentage of non-honoured students were influenced by their parents and friends who have tattoos and took little time to
Tattooing has been practiced across the world since at least Neolithic times, as evidenced by mummified preserved skin, and ancient art. Ancient art finds of possible tattooing tools suggest tattooing was practiced by the Upper Paleolithic period in Europe. However, direct evidence for tattooing on mummified human skin extends only to the 4th mulleneium BC. The oldest discovery of tattooed human skin to date is found on the body of Ötzi the Iceman, dating to between 3370 and 3100 BC. Other tattooed mummies have been recovered from at least 49 sites including locations in Greenland, Alaska, Siberia, Mongolia, western China, Egypt, and the Philippines. Multiple mummies from Siberia including the Pazyryk culture of Russia, and from several cultures throughout pre-Columbian South
When the instructors at the Art Institution began to espouse asinine diatribes concerning my chosen subject matter, I quit, the moment, Tommy Hadsmight, who owns a chain of ‘Tattoos and Body Piercing Salons’ hired me, Homer Scooter as his apprentice. Needless to say, only a fool would have turned down an opportunity to have Tommy mentor them. Since, anyone who knew anything about tats has heard of Tommy, the legend, the guru, and the master of masters. The grapes on the rumor vine swear that people showcase his ink in all seven continents.
There is a long list of cultures that utilised tattoos as a form of decoration and communication (Swami, 2011). That said, within some western societies, that historical connection to the tattoo is not that strong. However the art of tattooing has seen a steady growth of its popularity and acceptance, and since the early 1990s, that growth has accelerated dramatically (Caplan, 2000; Cash, 2011; DeMello, 2000; Swami, 2011). The current estimated incidence of tattooing amongst the populations of North America and Europe is approximately 25 percent (Laumann & Derick, 2006; Swami, 2011), with one researcher suggesting those rates could continue to increase to as much as 40 percent of the population (Anderson, 2006).
When one is thinking of American culture and the trends that goes along with it, numerous individuals will have a lot of different though to that phrase. Just like how America tends to change over the years, the culture and trends of its people do as well. Things that weren’t popular before are becoming popular and some are even evolving. Even naming your child is like a new trend in today’s society, there is Beyoncé and Jay-z naming their daughter “Blue Ivy Carter” after that there is Kanye West and Kim naming their daughter as well “North West”. Two years back you had a mother name her baby “Hashtag”, which is a twitter symbol. Taking traditional things and turning them around or even putting a new twist on them helps make a new trend.
Ashley Beth Logan Manuscript Speech D. Webb Speech 106 Tattoos and Body Piercings Good evening. I would like to start by asking how many of you have a tattoo or piercing other than your ears. Did you know that in most work environments, you are usually not even considered for employment if you’re tattoo or piercing is visible during the interview? I am one of the many people who believe tattoos and body piercings are a form of self expression. However, there are still that few out there who think they are nothing but self destructing. According to the first amendment, we have the God given right to express ourselves however we choose. I have personally taken an interest in piercings and tattoos. They are beautiful, and it takes a
