Target was created by the Dayton family, who said their goal for the company was to “combine the best of the fashion world with the best of the discount world” (Cornell, 2015). It all started in 1902 with a man named George Dayton. Dayton had studied markets in the Midwest and decided to create one of his own, he started a market named Dayton Dry Goods Company in Minneapolis. In 1911 Dayton renamed the company as Dayton’s department store, he felt that this better off suited the company with all of the products that the store offered. Target is always working hard on including the community and including diversity. Diversity is a major theme to every aspect of Target’s business, from team members, to suppliers and to the community. In the Corporate Governance and Ethics Disclosure, Target still focuses on the morals that were instilled with the company 50 years ago by the Dayton brothers. Those key factors focus on; a highly independent and engaged Board of Directors with a diverse set of relevant experiences, mechanisms that provide accountability to shareholders, and a management team whose interests are aligned with shareholders. In order to effectively implement these goals for guests, team members, shareholders and the communities, Target focuses on a continuous balance of diversity within the corporation. In accordance Target seems to be on the right direction to diversifying its company, and trying to accommodate each community depending on the location.

This corporation gives people the option to shop for groceries, clothes, household appliances, decor, and more, all in one go-round. It was founded in 1962 and so far, there are a total of 1,956 stores in the United States. Something that many people may not know about Target is that 5% of their profits go back into the community (Target Corporation 2019). I have chosen to research this company specifically because I visit this store at least once a week and it has become a favorite place of mine to go to when in need of groceries, makeup, home decor, and so many other things, without the need to visit another store.

This parent company was renamed the Target Corporation in 2000 and are based out of Minneapolis. There are over 1,800 Target stores throughout the United States which includes Targets and Super Targets. In 2005 Target began expansion in India and in 2011 to Canada however this expansion into Canada did not fare well and all Target Canada stores were closed by 2015. According to Forbes in 2005 they we ranked amongst the highest cash-giving companies in America with 2.1% given and they donate about 5% of its pre-tax operating profit. In 2010 Target was ranked number 22 by Fortune magazine’s World's Most Admired Companies.
