TV Crime Series: The Amazing Kreskin

KRESKIN is a compelling proposed new TV crime show. It features mentalist, Kreskin, known as the “Amazing Kreskin.” While detective shows are familiar to the industry, the concept of teaming Kreskin with the first female FBI agent is very exciting. It’s a solid hook for a show. The main characters feel castable. One can certainly conceive this as an on-going series. The pilot contains plenty of strengths, but there are some minor creative suggestions to discuss. First, for the strengths: the time and setting feels authentic with the Manson killings, Watergate, and the Zodiac killer. The goal of the TV series is clear. This script delivers two very complex core characters that drive the pilot. The first is Kreskin. He’s a character that the viewer roots for. He’s charming, witty, smart, but he’s also very vulnerable. He faces moral decisions. He makes for a complex protagonist. His dialogue is strong and reveals a lot about his character and mood. The script does a good job in establishing him as a loner. The irony is that he’s famous, has thousands of fans, but he lives a lonely life. She’s another complex and flawed character that is easy to watch. The idea of her being the first female FBI in the department is a good choice because this creates interpersonal conflict, as well as internal struggle. Diane is presented as a person who does deeply battle her inner demons. She balances being a woman within a male dominated world. She has a tough, hard exterior that covers up her vulnerability. There’s an implied backstory about a baby, which one assumes will become clearer later. The only questionable scenes are her sleeping with a stranger. It’s not clear that this fits with her personality and one thinks she would hide any crying (page 63). Nevertheless, these two characters generate good buddy attraction, which is crucial to the success of this series. They both are lonely characters; they complement and challenge one another. Kreskin works from his mental instincts and Diane works from evidence and data, but both their worlds nicely collide together. Diane has to learn more about her mental intuition, and Kreskin he has to learn to look at evidence. The characters exchange sharp and challenging dialogue, which helps create interpersonal conflict.
