CHAPTER TWO: A SPARK STARTS A FIRE
“What whip lashed them to their knees in shame and submission? The worship of the word "We.”
From the first page, you can notice connecting symbols scattered like sprinkles throughout Anthem. Every symbols sprinkled throughout the book represents a different, and large, array of things that are each as meaningful as the last. Yet, I believe that the four most important symbols in Anthem are the laws, the “Uncharted Forest”, and the word “I”. These symbols are the most important because they each change and form Equality in some way.
The first of these symbols are the laws that confine Equality. It is clear to tell that the laws in this society, are restrictive and symbolizes a loss of freedom. To begin

The “Uncharted Forest” represents a safe haven. Ayn Rand show this when Equality runs to the “Uncharted Forest” in order to escape from his punishers because he knows “no one will ever go in the Uncharted Forest,”(Rand, 1938, p. 76). Him running to the “Uncharted Forest” in order to escape an unfit punishment shows me that the forest is like a safe haven for Equality because society cannot physically reach him there. We see this symbol again in a much different light when Equality writes, “We are doomed. Whatever days are left to us, we shall spend them alone. And we heard of the corruption to be found in solitude,” (Rand, 1938, pg. 76). This is important to notice because the two examples contradict each other. The first example showcases the “uncharted forest” as a physical safe haven away from the punishment that Equality would have other ways faced, but the second example shows that Equality imagines it as a place that will destroy him. He imagines it as a place that will ruin him, because his was taught throughout his life that the forest is dangerous. Ayn Rand creates these two different viewpoints of the photo to show that while Equality is physically freed from his society, he is still held captive by the thoughts and standards that society instilled in …show more content…
“I” symbolizes individuality. One reason why I believe “I” symbolizes individuality is that “I” was banned and renamed the “Unspeakable Word” after collectivists laws were put in place (Rand, 1938, p. 23). These shows me that “I” stands for individuality because the leaders wanted to eliminate “I” in order to make everyone the same. This is because if you say “We” instead of “I” you begin to forget who you really are and this leads to a loss of individuality. Furthermore, Equality unlock individuality when he discovers the word “I”. Before he knew of “I” Equality had lived in a society where there was no man, only men, however when he discovers “I”, he reveals a much different thought process than the other citizens. “And man will go on. Man, not men,” (Rand, 1938, p. 101) is just one of the quotes that expresses Equality’s new thinking of the world once he escapes from society and learns about the “Unmentionable Times”, the times before laws of collectivism was in place. Soon after he learns about the “Unmentionable Times” he states, “It is my mind which thinks, and the judgement of my mind is the only searchlight that can find my truth,” (Rand, 1938, p. 102) This quotes show just how much Equality’s thoughts have changed from collectivism to individualism. This is important to notice because this means Equality is finally
A memorable symbol from Ayn Rand’s novel, Anthem is the Uncharted Forest where Equality 7-2125 leaves civilization behind in hopes to find himself. When he left he was not willing to sacrifice his discoveries of the light bulb or even his science experiments. He aspired to be just like Transgressor of the Unspeakable Word, the man who died saying the word “I.” He knew what self-sufficiency was and he knew how he was going to get it. Moments before the Transgressor died Equality promised him that he would carry on his legacy. Not only does that represent dedication it also represents determination. His whole life he wanted to be somebody, and finally the Uncharted Forest reflected everything he worked for in his life. It resembles everything
A noticable interesting topic about the story is the way Liberty acts. It seems Ayn Rand, the author, has something against women even though she is a woman herself. The meaning of this is, the women out there that act like girls and only care about fashion and themselves is what is being spoken of. The literary element that is being focased on deals with this issue. This essay will focas on the story "Anthem" written by Ayn Rand containing the literary element of character.
In the novella Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, set in a future where the government controls your life from birth to death. A small group of people rebelled against the government by running into the Uncharted Forest, which acts as the boundary of the city. Few people leave the city into the Uncharted Forest because of the dangers in the forest. The few people who have gone into the Uncharted Forest have burned their own path into the forest never to return. Those who entered the Uncharted Forest have stories told about deaths at the hands of monsters and beasts. Ayn Rand’s characterization of the men who entered the Uncharted Forest before Equality (MWEUFE) exhibit individuality through their actions, intellect, and spirit which shows their desire to free themselves from the oppressive society.
The story’s settings of the novel, Anthem, greatly influences the plot. The novel’s setting takes in a Dark Age where there is no creativity, technology, progress, or optimism. The “society” is completely controlled and manipulated by a central group of leaders. The story primarily centers around a young man named Equality 7-2521 who is a street sweeper. This occupation does not offer him opportunities to expand beyond his small controlled world. Equality 7-2521 take his readers on an adventurous life journey as written in his own journal. Readers feel his oppression and personal desperation as they travel through the dark tunnel and live each day in the shoes of Equality.
At the beginning of the novel, Rand uses the uncharted forest to symbolize fear in the citizen’s eyes. One day, while at work, Equality and his new “friend” International 4-8818 were adventuring behind the theater, when they came upon the uncharted forest, “It is empty save for the
" There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever." and the. This quote highlights the mindset of the society, where the concept of "I" is completely
The book Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, celebrates the controversial and enduring legacy of her controversial prospective. The book is written in the context of a journal, in an age that had lost all trace of science and civilization. Anthem portrays a totalitarian world of the future along with being technologically primitive. The world of Anthem does not allow the people to think for themselves, but for each other. Not having the ability to think for oneself impedes man to be self-sufficient and in this case, to progress technologically. Because of the society’s ability being hindered, it causes the society to not be able to advance, which is seen consistently throughout the novel in many events.
The novel “Anthem” is written very uniquely. It encloses individuality and makes the readers believe of how people can adapt to humankind and to do as they are advised to do without being aware of the results of their compromise. Also, it teaches the significance of self expression and the independence that comes additionally with being your own individual and obtaining the capability to choose what direction to take in your own lifestyle. Figurative language is used frequently in this novel and with differently use of quotes that have excellent importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel. “We blew out the candle….” The primary thing that is obvious about this quote is the use of “We”. The expression “We” is used all through the
In the novella, Anthem by Ayn Rand, the Council of Scholars believe that having the society and community as one whole instead of it being where the people are treated as individuals, is the best choice for all of the people. It is a sin if someone thinks about being alone and if you have thoughts or actions that go against the choice of being one whole. They worship the laws that say none among men may be alone, ever and at any time.
The novel of Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, contributes to controversial subjects in society that are still relevant today. Some issues addressed by Rand in her novel include: equality, social hierarchy, individuality, and government. Throughout the duration of reading Anthem the issues in which Rand makes relevant are not obvious, but more so discussed through conflicts and situations that the main character, Equality 7-2521, encounters. Although many of the altercations that present social issues are provided by either other characters singlehandedly or by a group of the characters in alliance, some of the main issues that arise in this novel are presented within the main character himself.
When Equality 7-2521 begins the novel by saying, “It is a sin to write this.” he has a different moral assessment of writing than at the end of the novel. Throughout Anthem, Equality’s actions affect how he views his society and the people around him. By the end of the story, Equality begins to realize that the government and society that he lives in might not be so perfect, and it might not be a sin to write. Equality’s eventual moral assessments of his sins are correct and are supported by; his growth throughout the story, the themes of independence developed in the novel and Ayn Rand’s concepts concerning communism. These are the three ideas that will be developed and explained in this paper.
“My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose” (Rand, 95). Anthem is written by American author Ayn Rand about Equality 7-2521 on his quest for happiness. The novel is set in an unspecified time and place in the future. Years after human civilization has gone through a deconstruction in which all knowledge was lost and a new society established with no concept of the individual. “The novel describes the efforts of the main character, Equality 7-2521, to reestablish a sense of personal identity and restore the knowledge of the past by objective scientific inquiry. In doing so, he must face many dangers and privations” (Anthem). Anthem is a dairy of the Equality
The internal conflict in Anthem plays a role within the novel by providing the complication that the protagonist, Equality, has to overcome in order to complete their quest. Equality is on a quest for freedom and for knowledge, even though it will separate them from their brothers. From the beginning of the novel until the third chapter, Equality notes how they commit transgressions against their society, such as preference, and how they are different from their brothers, an example being Equality’s height of 6 feet tall. In the third chapter, Equality more or less accepts their fate of being alone, even though the internal conflict still silently lurks in the
In Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, from the beginning to the end, the two main characters both have been called with three different names. The narrator has the names: Equality, Unconquered and Prometheus. The narrator’s lover has the names: Liberty, Gold One and Gaea. The utilization of three various names can be seen as the reflection of transition of Equality from collectivist in the city to objectivist in the forest through the shift of self-recognize, emotion and purpose of life.
Ayn Rand's Anthem shows us her view of our world united under what seems to be communist rule. For example their view of right and wrong; which Anthem portrays is a system of very strict rules which mainly make sure that everyone is involved in a collective role within the society in this system no one is considered an individual or that they can even think as an individual.
