In Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, from the beginning to the end, the two main characters both have been called with three different names. The narrator has the names: Equality, Unconquered and Prometheus. The narrator’s lover has the names: Liberty, Gold One and Gaea. The utilization of three various names can be seen as the reflection of transition of Equality from collectivist in the city to objectivist in the forest through the shift of self-recognize, emotion and purpose of life. At the beginning of the story, Equality is assigned as the narrator’s name in the community in the city, which reflects the fact that Equality is a completely collectivist. The name “Equality” itself is composed of a word and a series of meaningless numbers jest like one code for certain type of identical products in the grocery stores. Equality at this time has …show more content…
He also attains the meaning of “Ego”. “Prometheus” and “Gaea” were both the names of ancient Greek god, who created the human race and helped it flourish. The names also suggest that Equality and Liberty are completely individual people and in a new stage of life. “Prometheus” reflects his recognize of ego. After reading boos left in the house, Prometheus refers to himself as “I” instead of “we”. The word “I” is “this god, this one word” as stated in page 37. Now Prometheus realizes that he is an individual separated from all others, and that self-recognize is very valuable. Also, the love between them is in a new stage. Now they can love freely and have a happy family. As well, Prometheus has a greater pursue of life just like the god Prometheus. He tries to “build a new land and fort” of “freedom of Man” in page 40. This time, Prometheus’ dream is to reveal his full potential and bring liberty to the human race. The final name “Prometheus” stands for objectivism and a completely new stage of
“Anthem” – one of writing authors Ayn Rand, shows her at her most vicious, hungry, and ambitious reading personality not only as a writer, but as a storyteller as well. The classic hit novel “Anthem” is the predecessor to Ayn Rands later books and storytelling works such as “The Fountainhead” and “Atlas Shrugged”, often tackles controversial themes that are still prevalent within modern America today, such as Family & Love. The grandeur novel “Anthem” is a reflection of such topics, all whilst being told with almost an aura of mystery within the novels plotline / storyline. “Anthem’s” take on things such as individuality and self discovery along with universal, self serving terms such as “I” & the word “We” are the key factors in helping differinciate this author Ayn Rand from other authors that write and compse the same genre of literature as Ayn Rand. Anyways, please allow for me to introduce you to the under the surface, deeper themes expressed in the classic debut novel, Ayn Rands “Anthem”
“Do as you please with us, but please do not send us away from you” (83). This quote from the character Liberty 5-3000 (Golden One, named by Equality 7-2521) in Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem, shows the reader that Liberty 5-3000 wanted nothing more than to be with Equality 7-2521 even if it takes away her freedom. The partnership between the two characters have a different relationship from other novels. Anthem, shows the reader that the character Liberty 5-3000 is a fierce and as independent as a person can be in their society; which is different because they live in a communist society (doesn’t allow independence). Liberty 5-3000 used to be almost like Equality but as the novel progresses the Golden One starts to obey Equality’s every demand and give herself to Equality to an extreme; which is not common in most relationships in novels.
Ayn Rand’s “Anthem” illustrates a series of ironic connections between great successors of Greek mythology and to her two main characters. The main characters, Equality 7-2521 and Liberty5-300, both contain very interesting and unique personalities, which makes them incompatible with their collectivism society due to who they are and what they believe. Ayn Rand disperses random clues throughout the book that provide evidence and reasoning of why she chose to rename her characters after two significant creator figures in Greek mythology. So, why did Ayn Rand chose the names? How does it explain her philosophy?
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.
When Equality 7-2521 begins the novel by saying, “It is a sin to write this.” he has a different moral assessment of writing than at the end of the novel. Throughout Anthem, Equality’s actions affect how he views his society and the people around him. By the end of the story, Equality begins to realize that the government and society that he lives in might not be so perfect, and it might not be a sin to write. Equality’s eventual moral assessments of his sins are correct and are supported by; his growth throughout the story, the themes of independence developed in the novel and Ayn Rand’s concepts concerning communism. These are the three ideas that will be developed and explained in this paper.
Equality, a very curious main character, wants the experience of feeling valued not only within himself but also from others. The feeling of accomplishment and knowledge is what he is deprived of in his collectivist world and what many seek to feel. Individuality distinguishes one from others which is why each and every one is unique and why Equality feels he is different. This difference is due
The fiction novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, begins as equality takes a journey to individualism. He begins by writing how wrong he is to be writing what he is, how much of a sin it is. To be thinking as his own, and as an “I”. Ayn Rand is from Russia, which is a communist society. As Rand was growing up in this time frame, she had made the time to give herself an education which was frowned upon as she was a woman. She was not given a sense of “I” it was the normal thing for women to stand back and watch. To continue deeper into the book, Equality's eventual assessment of his writing on his own, changed from being a sin to being and individual activity, from the beginning to the end of the book.
“My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose” (Rand, 95). Anthem is written by American author Ayn Rand about Equality 7-2521 on his quest for happiness. The novel is set in an unspecified time and place in the future. Years after human civilization has gone through a deconstruction in which all knowledge was lost and a new society established with no concept of the individual. “The novel describes the efforts of the main character, Equality 7-2521, to reestablish a sense of personal identity and restore the knowledge of the past by objective scientific inquiry. In doing so, he must face many dangers and privations” (Anthem). Anthem is a dairy of the Equality
For example instead of alway’s referring to him as, “We” he would say, “I.” He would be willing to share all of these ideas withe the golden one. The only person he trusts is the golden one, international 4-8818 and his other friends. He said later he would go and bring them here. then he will make his own race. The theme of the book is that losing sight of the individual and his or her needs will lead to the destruction of all progress and all forward movement. This is related to the book because Prometheus wanted to work in the home of the scholars but the government did not let him. That is denying his needs. This lead to the destruction of all progress and all forward movement. Like the people revolting against the government.
brought them for a civilization where the word ?I? did not exist to a world
In this paper, I will be talking about the book called Anthem by Ayn Rand. I will be talking about characters such as protagonists and antagonists and how some characters impacted the story. I will talk about the setting, conflicts, and the plot of the story. I will also talk about literary devices such as point of view, symbolism, mood, tone, and theme.
“Change is certain. Progress is not.”, in the so-called perfect society, there is no progress and they are yet to develop, although, there are some people who defy these odds and develop into different people (Carr). The main character, Equality, has many obstacles to overcome but has yet to discover who he truly is. Although, as the story goes on, he starts to discover new things about himself, his purpose, and starts to realize he is not a part of this “perfect society”. The word “I” makes one an individual, however in Anthem, the word “I” is lost and there is no individual, just the collective people working for a common goal. Equality is set on a journey to find out who he truly is while
“I think. I am. I will.” A quote by Ayn Rand that is similar to Rene Descartes quote, “I think therefore I am.” This quote tells society that Prometheus can do anything by himself. He does not need the “we” of society to complete a task. Prometheus can think independently and wants to express himself as one individual. “I will,” illustrates that he will and can do anything. Prometheus believes, just as Rene Descartes does, that if he can think by himself, he is able to live by himself. As he is alone he is thinking by himself, therefore he is alive and able to express himself as he truly is.
Equality contemplates, “I wonder, for it is hard for me to conceive how men who knew the word “I”, could give it up and not know what they lost” (103). This quote narrates the discovery of one of the most essential words used to identify as a single, original person, I. Equality realizes the tragedy of the loss that his previous society created before his lifetime and really ponders why and how this could happen in a very separate world. Equality readies himself to be an individual person as a result of feeling strongly against the beliefs of his previous society. Equality excitedly states, “We made a fire, we cooked the bird, and we ate it, and no meal had ever tasted better to us. And we thought suddenly that there was a great satisfaction to be found in the food which we need and obtain by our own hand” (79). In the past, Equality had never done anything to express his originality because of the law stating otherwise, so when given the opportunity to finally understand his own strengths and weaknesses, he takes it. He disregards the law and excitedly grasps the concept that he isn’t supposed to be a follower like his peers were, he was meant to be a leader. Disagreeing with the law was a main point of Rand’s novella, promoting personal
The story of Anthem takes place in dystopian future in which freedom and human rights have been obliterated. Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, is a street sweeper who finds a tunnel where he conducts his science experiments which are considered a sin. Throughout the book we see him change and discover how capable he is through a multitude of literary devices. In the novella , Anthem, Ayn Rand utilizes vivid imagery and a profusion of diction to frenetically emphasize the idea of love.
