Jim Sinegal
In 1983, Jim Sinegal’s idea for a new business was a place where there were no signs identifying isles, no advertising, no way for customers to bag their purchases, and before customers would be allowed to shop, they had to pay an annual fee. That business is Costco and during Jim’s 30 years as founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), he grew that business into the fourth largest retailer in the country. Looking back on the legacy Jim left behind when he retired, it is clear that Jim is one of the most visionary and ethical leaders of our modern times. First, we will look at how Jim implemented his vision while demonstrating idealized influence by setting aside his self-interests and gaining the trust of the customer for the good of the company. Then we will explore Costco’s code of ethics that employs Dr. Toner’s principles of owing, ordering, and oughting. Finally, we will explore how Jim’s leadership style has impacted me and influenced my leadership.
Visionary Leader
Jim Sinegal was a visionary leader as demonstrated by his departure from the generally accepted retail business practices in favor of a transformational leadership style that gained the trust of his customers. Jim founded Costco with the idea that no product would be marked up by more than 15 percent (Chu & Rockwood,
Rae and Wong (2012) profiled Costco as a company which creates wealth for shareholders and value for customers while compensating employees well and treating suppliers fairly. Even though Costco facing critiques of operating more like Walmart with reduced wages and less benefits, the company stands strong in their desire to treat everyone involved with the company fairly (Rae & Wong, 2012). As CEO of Costco, Jim Sinegal, noted in serving employees that honesty and performing what is right cannot be the sole responsibility of management and everyone must comprehend what the rules are everyone should be mortified id Costco and its people do not behave as they are expected (Rae & Wong, 2012). Essentially, Sinegal relies on values and integrity throughout the ranks with servant leadership to perform appropriately and calls on anyone to report and object to anyone acting
From the company's inception, Jeffrey H. Brotman has served as chairman of Costco, and James D. Sinegal has been president. While Sinegal had a background in membership warehouses and retail chains (having been mentored by Sol Price, the founder of Fed Mart and Price Club), Brotman was an executive of an oil exploration company and cofounder of a group that operated a chain of apparel stores. In 1985 Costco became a publicly owned company, and in 1993, Costco merged with Price Club to
Target Corporation is known worldwide as a large retail chain that brings in millions of dollars each fiscal year. The ability to remain competitive in a saturated industry could prove difficult to some retailers, but Target remains one of the leaders in the retail market. With success comes risk. Target Corporation competes against online retailers as well as “big box” stores to remain competitive.
When one thinks of the retail giant Home Depot they think of reasonably priced items that will aid them in home improvement projects. In the business world though, the mention of this chain store brings to mind the controversial CEO Robert Nardelli who left an organizational path of destruction upon his departure from the company. Nardelli had an interesting leadership style that bordered on the edge of being considered unethical and was considered by many as not being beneficial for the company overall. By evaluating Robert Nardelli’s leadership style against known leadership theories such as trait, behavioral, situational and contingency theories it is easy to dissect his leadership style and make a final decision as to how ethical he
Ethical leadership is vital for the success of any business; this case study illustrates that the lack of moral values and a healthy ethically incline corporate culture, can lead to scrupulous behavior from the CEO all the way down the company. Scrushy had a demanding and cunning personality, and it was easy for his to influence others in his business to go along with the fraud. Also, having Stanwick and Stanwick, (2013) an active board of directors does have a positive impact on the performance of the firm. Also, good corporate governance supports the ethical requirements established by the stakeholders. A moral leader must cultivate a real ethically driven organization, which has no tolerance for unethical behavior.
The Home Depot learned the hard way that you must hire a leader that will stay true to the core values. The leader’s ethics and values will play a huge role in determining if the company will succeed or fail. The founders of The Home Depot built a culture on the foundation of respect, integrity, and compassion. The culture and customer service under the influence of the admired founders prospered.
Collins illustrates a persuasive profile of what it takes to be the leader of not a good but a great organization in the modern day. He also demonstrates the development of successful organizations as a consequence of ethical behavior rather than despite
Malthus’ work, Essay on the Principle of Population, is often cited, first by Darwin himself, to have influenced Darwin’s conception of the theory of natural selection. His work, though unpopular, and often proven to be off the mark, did in fact bring to the forefront many socio-economic issues that are still being debated today: population control, food production and concerns over uncontrollable diseases arising from the effects of over-population. In this passage it is stated that Malthus was proven wrong: “...Malthus’ dire predictions have proven to be wrong...” (Efficiency and Equity 211). However, though his calculations have proven to be wrong because he could not accurately account for the
Costco started from a single store in Seattle in 1983 to become one of the largest multinational warehouses chain. The story of Costco begins with the exemplary leadership from the co-founders, James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman. The cofounders launched Costco with the idea of having a high volume of inventory which they could sell for low cost. In order to provide their items at low cost and also pay their employees well to keep them motivated, Sinegal and Brotman concocted a brilliant idea. The idea was to use the warehouse as itself, meaning that concrete floors, fluorescent lights, and pallets of merchandise are all essential to keep price low and customer happy. Although it does not look visually appealing, the

ADHD is a topic of great interest to me because of its prevalence within my immediate and extended family. It affects both myself and my youngest son, Cory. When, as a group, we were considering possible topics to present, I suggested ADHD. My group members agreed that that would be an interesting topic to discuss. My specific contribution to the presentation was to discuss the characteristics of this disorder per the instructions of section II in the SW8340 syllabus. I discussed the symptoms of ADHD, various differential diagnoses, criteria for a diagnosis of ADHD, and how that criteria has changed between the fourth and fifth editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Most of my data was collected directly from the DSM V.
