Styles of writing differ from writer to writer. It is clear that many writers have their own style which make them unique in their own way. However, there are many similar components in writing that authors practice in order to make their writing as effective as possible. In Suzanne Britt and Dave Berry’s essays, they reveal their opinions on the same topics but differing subjects, and in these essays, it is clear that both writers make use of many similar techniques. Yet, within these similarities, an apparent distinction in their writing style is present. Britt and Barry both make use of a sarcastic tone throughout their essays. These humorous real-life situations, allows the reader to remain intrigued throughout the essay. Unlike Britt, Berry explains how two different sexes have different specialties, especially when it comes to cleaning. With use of situational examples, the reader is able to accurately relate to it, realizing that the claims presented are true. Britt’s writing style was more effective because her techniques, like repetition, proved more beneficial at reeling the reader in. Repetitions tends to emphasize on a point, making it stand out throughout the essay. When mixed in with the humor and sarcastic tone, it was one step ahead of Barry’s style. Considering that both had similar components overall, Britt’s use of repetition made her writing more effective. As mentioned before, the styles authors use to develop the effectivity of their essays may frequently reveal the same pattern. Components like humor greatly influence how effective an essay will turn out to be. However, because writing styles differ from writer to writer, there will always be that just noticeable difference between those techniques. Everyone knows what writing is to one extent or another, but we all have different definitions of how it should be done and varying degrees of seriousness about the art. We all have a process of writing, but each is unique to ourselves and our own experiences. Annie Dillard and Stephen King are two well known authors who have published many pieces, two of which describe how they view the writing process and let their readers get a peek of what goes on through their minds when they write. These two pieces are Dillard’s The Writing Life and King’s “What Writing Is.”
“Simplicity” by William Zinsser, “That Lean and Hungry Look” by Suzanne Britt and “The Home Place” by Jimmy Carter. These three pieces of writing are vastly different, they are all based on different subjects, and written by different authors. However, they do have one similarity which is that all three authors used vivid examples when attempting to assert their claims and thesis. An example that comes to mind is in “Simplicity” by William Zinsser. Zinsser used actual quotes and examples of pieces of writing to prove his main claim and thesis one of those examples being Franklin D. Roosevelt’s memo. n his article "The Writing of Essays", Charles S. Brooks uses figurative language to show the difference between essayist and novelist. He uses metaphors and imagery to contrast the two writers. Brooks uses a metaphor to make the comparison between an essay to a back-stove cookery and a novel needing a hot fire. He says, "An essayist needs a desk and a library at hand, because an essay is a kind of back-stove cookery. A novel needs a hot fire, so to speak.

It is essential to understand that classes taken in grade school do not give students a full understanding of each subject. With the topic of writing, there will always be a new lesson to learn, an aspect to improve, or a differing way to explain. Author Craig Vetter states in Bonehead Writing, “This is your enemy: a perfectly empty sheet of paper. Nothing will ever happen here except what you make happen.” Each story, essay, or response comes from a writer’s experiences. With each attempt at a new piece comes an underlying story of emotions the writer is facing. Each person’s writing is unique and the ideas people have are related to their past experiences and what they believe to be familiar with when deciding which writing style to use. As a high school student, I have learned many things about writing that helped me become the improved writer I am today, but the most essential advice I have received is practice makes perfect. Although there is no actual perfect way of writing, I have discovered that each essay I write, my writing improves. It is easier to spot mistakes, find areas to improve, and ponder elevated word choice to use.

I found “Shitty First Draft” interesting due to humorous tone remains throughout the essay. After reading this paper, I realized how important to convey different tones of writing in accordance with the situation or the story you are telling; it is reflective of your writing style, current mood and even your point of view towards certain subject matters. For example, in “Shitty First Draft”, the author reveals some facet of writers in face of challenging themselves to finish writing. Instead of being calm and relaxed, those writers are anxious and worrisome as the author states, “It is not like you don't have a choice---because you do---you can either type or kill yourself.” By telling the readers a few writing stories in an amusing way, the author successfully makes the difficulty of writing understandable to the readers. It is like telling yes, I understand your pain because I went through it before and everyone did. By doing so, the author makes herself approachable to the students who struggle with writing and those potential readers are now more willing to listen to her advice.
An author’s writing style expresses a different view to their story. Many authors vary in their writing style is shown in the story My First Free Summer, the poem Exile, the poem All American Girl and the short story Antojos. Alvarez’s writing style consists of many factors because she uses imagery, figurative language, and point of view to convey a theme.
Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in-class exercises, and final assignments, I think I have figured out my own
The essay “The Sense of Style” by Steven Pinker explains that writing is not a natural talent. Pinker argues that to improve the skill of writing, people must read other’s written work to understand and learn the rules of writing. I have written a summary based on Pinker’s essay explaining the importance of reading and how to improve writing skills. Through my response, I indicate the necessity of reading to improve writing skills, but by practicing the rules learned by writing the reader will remember what they have learned.
