Survival. That was Brian’s only mindset in Gary Paulsen’s novel, Hatchet. Brian is a thirteen year old city boy who goes to visit his father in the Canadian wilderness for the summer. Midway through the flight, the pilot began jerking uncontrollably and by the time he stopped, he was lying dead. Brian, after the mysterious death of the pilot, is forced to pilot a plane alone. He manages to crash land in the Canadian forest, but now he has another problem. Survival. Brian now has to learn how to live again.
Gary Paulsen wrote this adventurous, action-packed book based off of many of his own real life experiences. Most of the situations Brian goes through, Paulsen went through himself. This allows Paulsen to write with astonishing
The main character is Adam Daley, he is a sixteen year-old boy with a kind and compassionate personality. He is brave and is easily able to persuade people. I think Adam is a very kind hearted and intelligent person, and he is highly sociable and skilled, especially as a pilot. He would be a popular person that most people would respect. However, Adam is often too ambitious and trustful, he does not always consider the possible negative consequences or the worst-case scenario, which I think is his major flaw that may potentially affect his or his neighbourhood’s survival.
The protagonist of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is Brian Robeson, a thirteen-year-old boy from New York. The setting of this book is the northern Canadian wilderness. At the beginning of the book, Brian is going on a plane from New York to Canada to visit his father after he and Brian’s mother got divorced. The divorce and “The Secret” that Brian’s mother is having an affair plagues Brian for the majority of the book. As the pilot of the plane is flying them over the Canadian wilderness, the pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes into a large lake. Brian survives, but the plane has sunk in the lake. Brian is injured and has no food. He eventually finds a bunch of strange berries and eats them, but they end up making him sick. He then finds a large amount of raspberries and spots a bear while he is there. He makes a shelter, but in the middle of the night, a porcupine wanders into his shelter and Brian throws his hatchet at it. It shoots quills into his leg and runs off.
Brian’s Return is about a man named Brian, he volunteered to go on a camping
In chapter 9 of hatchet by Gary Paulsen Brian attempts to make fire. He starts off by ripping up the $20 bill thinking it would work as kindling, but he was wrong. There were tiny orange sparks, but they died down quickly. Next up, he finds some dried leaves and grass, but the same thing happens. Sparks, then nothing. Brian was left feeling hopeless. Then, he sees some tiny strings of hair-like material coming off of a tree, and gets a good idea. He rubs the hairs in his hand and it creates a fine powder. So, Brian puts them into a little like, attempts to ignite it, and there are more sparks, but not enough to make a full on fire. Then Brian realizes...he needs oxygen! He needs to blow on the fire as soon as he ignited it, so that the flame
The book that I am writing a book report is 'Hatchet'. It is written by Gary Paulsen. This is about a boy who survived at isolated forest of northern Canada for 54 days. It is impressive that the background of this book is beautiful and magnificent nature, and the author described the psychological changes of a character very well.
After a plane drives by and does not acknowledge Brian. Brian tries to commit suicide. He survives and after he survives he begins to hunt for fish. Brian teaches himself how to create a bow and hunt Brian finally succeeds and learns how to do it. He is proud of himself.
Brian decides to make a raft and get the survival pack in the plane, and he finally succeed. He had got sleeping bag, cook set, butane lighters, an aid-kit, fishing kit, and even a .22 rifle. Brian felt richness and he was no fear of everything. Also, there was a lot of freeze-dried food, and an Emergency Transmitter. Brian used it, and fortunately he got rescued after a 54days-survival by a pilot who heard Brian's Emergency
In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen the main character Brian faces many adversities. While Brian was flying a plane to go see his dad in Canada the pilot had a heart attack and Brian had to safely land the plane. Now he is all alone in the wilderness. The three adversities that Brian faced was flying the plane after the pilot died, making a fire, and making hunting weapons.
Feeling alone. Being the only one. Not knowing what to do. All of these feelings are feelings that a person would not want to feel. One might need to turn to a friend, a role model, or a parent for help. But, what if these people were not there? What if the only person one had was themselves, and they were the only one who knew about all the secrets in the world. They knew what they had done, and they drowned themselves in the guilt that was placed in them after their one mistake. In the young adult novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the dystopian fiction piece The Giver by Lois Lowry, and the realistic fiction book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, the characters overcome hardships, difficult tasks, and social struggles in order to Come of Age.
He is alone since the pilot had died, and he also hardly has any materials to survive so he is left to struggle. The setting and Brian’s actions and thoughts reveal the theme because the setting affects his actions and thoughts throughout
Have you ever had a nightmare where you were stuck on an Island by yourself? Well this really happen to Brian in the story Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. He was stuck on the island for 54 days. This caused moments were he had to put his thinking to the test. He had aha moments of realization on figuring out problems he may have had in the story. When he had these moments it would impact the way the story on ways to survive. These moments helped him out on how to make a fire with his resources he has, and also helps him have a more proficient way on catching fish.
Flight is a novel by Sherman Alexie that tell the story of a distressed Native American teenage boy, who has sadly stretched his breaking point after years of ill-treatment at the hands of adults, named Michael but prefers to be called Zits, “Call me Zits. Everybody calls me Zits. That is not my real name, of course. My real name is not important.” (Zits, p.1). Zits was left to his own devices at the age of six when his mother died of breast cancer and his father did not stick around much after he was born and left him. “I get into arguments and fistfights with everybody. I get so angry that I go blind and deaf and mute” (Zits, p.8)Zits is a violent person and takes out his anger on anyone because he has been in and out of the foster care system, none of which felt like family, with foster parents who only cared about the government cheque. He feels left out from the rest of the society mostly because of his half-Indian heritage and his abuse. Because of this, he is easily persuaded into committing crimes.
This book is written by Gary Paulsen. It takes place in the Canadian wilderness, where Brian Robeson’s, who is 13 yrs. Old, plane crashes. Brian shows a lot of determination and strength, to be able to survive in the wilderness, with no one else.
Hatchet is the book I chose to write about. Brian gets on to the plane right before his mom hands him a “HATCHET”. Brian is on his way to his dad's when something happens. He is stranded in the middle of nowhere. He is trying to figure out how to survive but, he was used to eating fast food and from fancy restaurants in the city. When he is out in the middle of nowhere with no experience, it is really hard for him to survive this is a life or death situation. He finally figures out some techniques catching food and how to boil the water to be safe to drink. He has a tough time at first trying to figure out what to do but, after awhile he is good to go he can find food
In the book Brian's Return, by Gary Paulsen, Brian has to find his way home out of the wilderness. This is a realistic fiction book that is very good so far in my opinion. In this blog I will be talking about three main events in the story, and I am ready to start.
