Analysis Of The Hatchet By Gary Paulsen

The protagonist of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is Brian Robeson, a thirteen-year-old boy from New York. The setting of this book is the northern Canadian wilderness. At the beginning of the book, Brian is going on a plane from New York to Canada to visit his father after he and Brian’s mother got divorced. The divorce and “The Secret” that Brian’s mother is having an affair plagues Brian for the majority of the book. As the pilot of the plane is flying them over the Canadian wilderness, the pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes into a large lake. Brian survives, but the plane has sunk in the lake. Brian is injured and has no food. He eventually finds a bunch of strange berries and eats them, but they end up making him sick. He then finds a large amount of raspberries and spots a bear while he is there. He makes a shelter, but in the middle of the night, a porcupine wanders into his shelter and Brian throws his hatchet at it. It shoots quills into his leg and runs off.

After he crashes, even though he knows things are not going his way he retains a positive attitude and keeps busy. This is a very smart and important move when trying to survive, any doubting will finish you. Brian is very strong mentally because he manages to keep positive after he sees his mother with a man other than his father, his parents divorce, his pilot dies and he gets stranded in the forest. I don’t think most people could cope with all that, I don’t think I could cope well with all that. Not only is he strong mentally but he is also strong physically. After a crash most people would be hurt and discouraged but he is up and moving the next day. He knows to get food, water and a shelter asap. By the third day he had made a proper shelter, a fire for warmth and a fire for signaling, found food and started planning next

In chapter 14, “At one point, a skunk that steals Brian's turtle's eggs sprays him. The spray blinded him for two hours and prevented Brian from being better prepared in case of an emergency. We learn never to give up if we haven’t even tried yet, and try our best to solve the problem. While some people might say how we're going to learn about this in a surviving theme book, they forget that in the text it says “In the park that time they had decided the best shelter was a lean-to and Brian set out how to make one up (Paulsen 57).” This paragraph tells us that even if Brian has a plane crash, he still wants a safe shelter to survive.

Gary Paulsen’s story,”Hatchet” is about a young boy whose plane crashes in the woods close to a lake on the way to see his dad. Before the plane took off, Brian's mom gave him a hatchet to put in his waist belt. When his plane crashed the pilot died but Brian didn't, so Brian is left to survive off of the skills he already knows. He didn't quite know that many, but he had a few gadgets, like the hatchet his mom gave him. When the plane crashed Brian could've easily just killed himself but he didn't, he did not give up trying. Therefore because Brian didn't give up, so, he soon started to survive.. Brian would use his hatchet to build his shelter and get food.The nights that Brian was hungry and wanted to look for food, he got up made a spear

He gets there because the pilot suffers a heart attack. Yet when Brian gets there, he thinks of The Secret. The Secret this time contains his mom cheating on Brian's dad with another guy, but this is behind a tree where they are kissing. Brian then soon realizes that his dad eventually leaves, thinking it was his fault. Brian soon feels bad that he never tells him.

Brian Robeson, is the main character in the story the hatchet. Brian is a thirteen year old boy from new York city. Brian took for granted his life until one day he was in a devastating plane crash, that left him stranded alone in the forest. Hatchet, is based solely on brians survival in the forest and how it changed his life forever.

In Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, setting plays a significant role in the story. In the book it says, “ There were wolves, he thought, and bears- other things. In the dark he would be in the open here, just sitting at the bottom of a tree (55).” These quotes show the dangers of being in the forest alone. Since the whole story is about a stranded boy, it would not make sense if it did not take place in the wilderness.

He carried this lesson throughout the book. This theme is also shown persistently in many parts of the book including the beginning, middle, and end. In the beginning it is shown, when Brian must fly the plane and successfully and accurately land it, and when he must adapt to all the mosquitoes in the forest that are biting him and “bugging” him. Then in the middle of the book, the theme is shown when Brian must adapt to the turtle eggs and when Brian realizes that he has adapted to living in the wilderness and that he is much more skilled than before. Lastly, in the end of the book it is shown when Brian is much more content about his parents’ divorce. Stephen Hawking once said, “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change”. This strongly relates to Brian in the novel, Hatchet and adds on to the theme,the importance of learning to adapt. All in all, Brian Robeson has showed many signs of change reflecting towards the theme--The Importance of Learning to Adapt--in the award winning book, written by Gary Paulsen,

An important event in Hatchet was when the pilot died and Brian had to talk to someone and then he had to get the headset and ask for help. Brian was freaking out and he did not want to grab the headset because he would have to touch the dead pilot. After Brian got the headset off the pilot Brian was talking but he did not know he had to press the switch so that he could hear what to do otherwise. After Brian hears the voice of the other man he knows that he has to crash the plane but the debates on if he should crash the plane in the water or in the woodsy area which either way he had a slim chance of living.

These bad memories made him feel helpless, and he focused on all of the things that were going wrong. However, memories like the one about his accident on his dirt bike, helped him stay healthy. I think that some of the memories Brian had actually helped him, like the

The book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is about a boy, Brian, who had many struggles with survival after he was stranded in a Cessna 406 with his dead pilot who just had a heart attack. He had trouble with his surrounding as he used his intellect to prevail in difficult survival situations. Brian had trouble with blood-thirsty insects, chaotic animals, finding food and many more obstacles.

Is prejudice actually a thing of the past? Are African-Americans still treated differently from whites? As time goes on, people like to think that with time comes change. In some cases it does, concerning change in economy, surroundings, Presidents and so forth. However, the way blacks are treated is surely not one of them.

But when you start to think about it, you don’t realize how much of a responsibility is on one person when you have no stores to go to, no house to live in, nothing. In the book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, a thirteen year old boy named Brian Robeson took on a big responsibility by directing a plane onto an island causing him to be the only survivor and being along for fifty-five days. It wasn’t easy for him to adjust to the new lifestyle but he managed to survive with only him and his hatchet that was very special to him. After comparing what Brian knew about the wilderness and the strategies he used to my own, I wouldn’t of survived for fifty five days.

Man’s morality is not that of an ordinary morality, but that of a new morality. This new morality is one of selfishness, not mystical or social.
