In order to tackle an aspect of social concern a scientist must take into review scholarly articles of the research previously conducted by others. “Conducting a thorough search of the research literature and then reviewing critically what you have found lays an essential foundation for any research project. “ This gives you the opportunity to develop your thinking and consider other perspectives and alternative arguments to fine tune your own methods and ideas for conducting a research project (Bachman & Schutt, 2014, p. 26). Conducting a literature review can help identify a research questions that you would like to further investigate and what method you should use. “Sherman and Berk (1984) learned from their literature review that there …show more content…

In this way, reviewing the literature identifies unanswered questions and contradictory evidence.” (Bachman & Schutt, 2014, p. 26). When conducting a literature review you will want to find academic articles such as refereed journals. The article we are reviewing for this assignment: “Peer violence perpetration among urban adolescents: Dispelling the myth of the violent immigrant” by Almeida et al, used the studies conducted by several others; Feldmeyer (2009), Hunt et al (2002), Peguero (2008), and Smokowski et al (2009) just to name a few. In doing so, Almeida et al were able to identify that: “…few studies have examined youth violence across immigration related factors other than nativity… most have not systematically examined rates of violence by generation status…. Inappropriately generalized to all Latino immigrants.” (Almeida et al, 2010). Performing a literature review helped Almeida et al to identify questions that were unanswered and research methods that they could utilize that were relevant to a reliable and valid argument surrounding the question of the “violent …show more content…

The city of Boston was chosen to sample and the elements and primary sampling unit were the high schools in the City of Boston. The sampling method used was availability sampling, which is selecting elements based on availability; all 32 traditional public high schools (primary unit) in Boston were invited to take part of the study, only 22 participated. Using the 22 schools that responded, the researchers then used a random sampling method. A random number strategy was used to select different classrooms (secondary unit) in each school (Bachman & Schutt, 2014) (Almeida et al, 2010). The research design used was a cross-sectional design in which the data was collected at only one point in time. This type of survey covered a range of topics such as demographics, health behaviors, and involvement in school, developmental assets and risk factors with an emphasis on violence. Questions used were fixed-choice and had exhaustive responses (Bachman & Schutt, 2014, p. 83) with good psychometric properties. The questions were clear and meaningful and the respondents were given clear direction so as to limit the room for interpretation. The Survey also references a time period to be considered when answering questions, which was the last 30 days (Almeida et al, 2010). Obtaining informed consent can be problematic for researchers (Bachman & Schutt, 2014, p. 59), but participants must be informed in order
