Chapter six of Tracking The Vanishing Frogs talks about frogs and sunbathing. It also talks about the UVB theory. Mountain yellow legged frogs can sometimes be seen sunbathing in Palm Springs , California. Ultraviolet radiation is light emitted by the sun. Another type is called uvb. It can be deadly. It is slowly beginning to reach earths surface as the ozone layer in the stratosphere thins. CFCs cause damage to the ozone layer. UVB causes skin cancer , cataracts and can weaken the immune system in humans. When it was found that Cascade frogs were dying they began to look for a reason why. After a while they decide to see if it was linked to UVB. Blaustein and Hayes were working on it together for a while. They used boxes , filters , and
In the folktale “The Celebrated Jumping frog of Calaveras County,” by Mark Twain. A man traveling from the east arrives at a western mining town. A man named Simon Wheeler speaks with an older man in order to find out more about a suspicious myth involving a man named Leonidas W Smiley, but instead of revealing it right away he tells him about an infamous Jim Smiley. As you read this folktale the display of tone in the text reveals a sense of annoyance, and disbelief.
Which amphibian has red eyes, yellow feet, and looks like a leaf? Red Eyed Tree Frogs of course! Because Frogs are amphibians, they spend most of their time in water or wet places. Interestingly, Female will lay their eggs in water, when these eggs hatch they become tadpoles. These baby frogs have many stages such as, developing back legs, growing front legs, becoming a juvenile frog, and finally losing its tail and becoming an adult. Red Eyed Tree Frogs Wake up at dusk and go on the prowl for insects and fruit, which are its main diet. Also, when red eyed tree frogs sleep, they curl their feet and shut their eyes, they look exactly like a leaf, this helps from camouflage from predators. These loveable leaping
The varying writing techniques of the literary world bring particular elements to stories, giving each their own added meaning. In his story, “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” Mark Twain uses two distinct dialects. Contrasting characters, one named Simon Wheeler and the other remaining unnamed, each speaking in their own fashion. By doing this to his characters, Twain ensures that the reader experiences the writing of the realism era in a way that is more than a plot that is merely stated, and not given much value. The characteristics that the story has from dialect usage- these being distinction between two scenarios, theme, and authenticity-are supplemental to the plot’s overall caliber.
The issue I will be raising is one that might not be familiar to all who reside in California and that is primarily focused around the fragmentation and overall mutilation of areas that keep and protect the species Rana Draytonii, otherwise known as the California Red-legged Frog. One of the reasons I raise this issue, is because most importantly “these frogs were named the official state amphibian of California via AB 2364” (Patrick McGreevy.). An even greater reason to discuss this dilemma is because they are limited in their size around the Southernmost California residences, whereas they had previously occupied approximately “70% of its former habitat” according to environmentalists (Campbell.). My goal is to highlight their ecological value to the state and how the California red-legged frog’s value is more significant than the fragmentation and intrusion taking place. These red-legged frogs are currently listed as endangered, but they are vulnerable to human intrusion by means of erecting buildings, projects for road construction, introduction of a non-native species along with habitat fragmentation in areas near where they might usually reside such as near the south Mendocino County and along southern California with populations extending to the Santa Rosa Plateau (Hammerson, Geoffrey). The California red-legged frog has an intrinsic link to
The northern leopard frog is an important predator for its invertebrate prey, such as worms and flies.
There is a deadly fungus called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, Bd for short, that has been wiping out populations of frogs all across the world. Bd has caused dozens of extensions over the past four decades and leaving behind very few survivors. Also in the 1980s the frogs faced a similar problem with this chyrid fungus that wiped out four frog species. However, there are two frogs, the whistling tree frogs and the alpine tree frog, that are doing better than scientists predicted.
Several findings are made based on the results: UV radiation can cause cell death by inducing genetic mutation, which agree with Diepegen et al. (2012)’s finding regarding UV radiation’s destructive effect at a cellular level. Photoprotective agents can effectively prevent and reduce UV radiation induced damage to cells. Similar findings were made by Quatrano and Dinulos (2013), who indicated that sunscreen contains active ingredient that absorbs UV radiation ranging between 290-400 nm. This experiment proves that photoprotective agents with higher SPF values are more effective in absorbing UV radiation. Indicated by Green et al. (2011), they suggested that regular application of high SPF sunscreen will prevent melanoma.
In their movements, northern leopard frogs can encounter native grass prairie as well as crop fields and grazed pastures that potentially can act as barriers to their movements. Since grassland prairie and wetlands in the PPR have been greatly reduced, the wetlands that are highly depended on by the northern leopard frog to complete its’ life cycle in the prairie pothole region have become separated by greater distances. Depending on the cover type through which a frog must move, it can become exposed to the sun, wind, and other environmental factors for longer periods of time that, in turn, could cause them to lose water faster than if moving through a more naturally vegetated area. In addition, they may become more visible to predators.
The Southern Corroboree Frog is a critically endangered species found on Mt Kosciusko, in Victoria, Australia.

The most effective way to prevent them from going through extinction is to restore and augment their environment. One of the greatest causes for their endangerment is the shrinking of the Houston toad’s habitat, either through fires or urbanization. Their main home, Bastrop State Park, was devastated by an immense fire, greatly decreasing their numbers. By fixing the burned forest, it gives the toad more land to live which will leave them in a vulnerable status. In other words, the more the habitat there is, the more Houston toads there will be. Many organizations such as the U.S Fish and Wildlife Services and Houston zoo have joined the fight to help these creatures.
"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" is by Mark Twain. It tells a story about Jim Smiley, though the narrator was sent to learn about Leonidas W. Smiley. Jim Smiley is known for his risky attitude. He is a gambler that often cheats, he is greedy, and uneducated
I think everything goes in a perfect way as it’s the first time for us to teach students. However, the time was very short but we controlled every thing and we start and end on time, rather than that the students were very exiting and interesting to know about the life cycke of the frog, and they did the activities and participate and some of them were asking questions about the frog, for example, where the frog live?. In addition, they were engage wich ,eans that they understand the lesson.
UVB - Medium - wavelength UVB is very living active but cannot go through beyond the superficial skin layers. It is responsible for delayed tanning and burning; in addition to these short-term effects it enhance skin ageing and some what promotes the development of skin cancer. They are present all year around and depending upon the time of year, can be 30 to 50 times more prevalent than UVB rays. UVB, the chief causes of skin reddening and sunburn, tends to damage the skin’s more superficial epidermal layers. “It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and a contributory role in tanning and photoaging. Its intensity varies by season, location, and time of day.” The most significant amount of UVB hits the U.S. between 10am and 4pm from April to October. However, UVB rays can burn and damage your skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as shower ice, which bounces back up to 80 percent of the rays that they hit the skin twice. UVB rays do not some what go through glass.
The Rana pipien is a frog more commonly known by the name Northern Leopard Frog. They are characterized by dark spots on their dorsal side and dorsolateral folds and considered medium sized. This strong jumper is difficult to catch during the day. It emits startling “warning screams” when jumping into the water and when grabbed. The frog may also release urine to discourage potential predator and reduce weight for jumping. The Rana pipien eats a variety of invertebrates. During winter, they often spend it under under submerged logs or rocks in small streams or marshes where large numbers may congregate.
