1. In The First Day of School, by Harry and Rosemary Wong, Wong states that the three characteristics of an effective teacher are that a teacher “has positive expectations for student success”, “Is an extremely good classroom manager”, and “knows how to design lessons for student mastery”. The first characteristic essentially means that an effective teacher needs to believe that her students can and will learn. If a teacher believes that her students can learn and can achieve anything, there is a higher chance that they actually will. The second characteristic states that if a teacher is good at managing her classroom, she will be more effective because this will create an environment suitable for learning and teaching. Wong compared a classroom
In Unit B of The First Days of School, Wong discusses how to increase positive student behavior. In this unit, the author informs us about the five significant concepts that enhance positive expectations. These five significant concepts include, name, please, thank you, smile, and love. In order to have a good teacher-student relationship, teachers will have to practice these concepts.

Our reading for this week is from the uniquely formatted book written by Harry and Rosemary Wong titled, “The First Days of School; How to be an Effective Teacher.” The focus section of our reading is based in Unit C of the text, which focuses of Classroom Management. Chapters 11-16 were read, and these chapters focus on the topics of how to have a well managed classroom, effectively preparing the classroom, how to introduce yourself to students, seating arrangement/assignment, starting a class, and the proper timing and execution of taking roll. Essentially each chapter of this text follows the same format. There will be a few paragraphs discussing what “effective teachers” would do followed by a few paragraphs about what “ineffective teachers”
A fellow educator would hear these answers as examples of the teacher’s ability to engage students in every lesson, her desire for all students to succeed, and her competence in subject matter. Although an outstanding educator exudes many other characteristics, these three qualities are essential for one to be considered an outstanding, high-quality teacher.
What is an effective teacher? Is it a teacher who is caring, compassionate, warming, and personable? Or is it a teacher who is good at planning, works well with other teachers/administrators, and self-disciplined? Many people would say that these qualities and characteristics would make an ideal teacher, and they would be correct. But these qualities alone are not enough to be considered an effective teacher.
I believe there are many skills and attributes that are necessary to an outstanding teacher; one’s ability to keep students engaged, the desire to see all students achieve, and knowledge of the content taught are attributes of an outstanding educator.
It’s a little gem for newer teachers who want accessible activities for the first day or week at their fingertips. – Sandee Thompson, Modern English Teacher
# 1 Identify and discuss four dispositions/characteristics you feel an effective teacher MUST possess and provide justification for your thinking using scholarly knowledge from texts, experiences, and classroom discussions. Then, explain which philosophy of education your four chosen dispositions describe. A deep understanding and grounding in the philosophy must be evident in your answer.
In Chapter 1 of The First Days of School, Wong discusses that a teacher’s success during the school year is determined by the first few days of school. In this chapter, the author speaks about structuring your classroom to have a successful school year. This chapter informs us that the most effective teachers spend time organizing and structuring their classroom in order to keep the students in control of their future actions. Wong states, “ The most important thing to establish in the first week of school is consistency.” I believe that this statement is correct because students like a routine.
I believe that teaching excellence comes from two different things, dedication and the desire to help others. Teachers who are dedicated to their students and classrooms are definitely going to be excellent and never give up at what they do. Teachers who have a great desire to help their students and their career will continue to do everything they can to make sure their students receive what is needed. The two characteristics that make an excellent teacher are dedication and the desire to help others.
While there are many ways to be an outstanding teacher, every high-quality teacher should, in my opinion, have these skills and dispositions:
Empathy is the third quality. A teacher must have the ability to bond with the students, to understand and resonate with their feelings and emotions. He/she need to put his/herself in students’ situation to understand and solve students’ problem. A good teacher must know that the aggression, negative attitudes that he/she can see in some students have a root cause. He/she know that they are really scared young people who have come through some bed experiences in life. This will keep a teacher calm and have control. If a teacher can do this, he/she will gain more than love from his/her students.
In this first unit of The First Days of School, Harry Wong presents three characteristics of an effective teacher. The three characteristics are: has good classroom management skills, teaches for mastery, and has positive expectations for student success.
Teachers also have to have special qualities to make them an effective teacher. According to Robert J. Walker teachers need to have twelve basic characteristics that he highlights in his article Twelve Characteristics of an Effective Teacher. The twelve characteristic included in the article are being prepared, positive attitude, high expectations, creative, fair, personal touch, sense of belonging, compassionate, have a sense of humor, respectful, forgiving and able to admit mistakes. I believe Walker has encompassed all the important characteristic of an effective teach. These are all characteristics that I possess, which will make me an effective teacher (Walker, 2008). Cathy L. Seeley believes there are ten roles teachers have in the classroom that she highlights in her article Ten Roles for Math teachers. I found these roles to be creative in description of their purpose. Those ten roles are: 1) An architect for creating a learning environment. 2) A composer for creating the tasks the student will engage. 3) A director because teachers determine how students will relate to each other, their tasks, and the environment. 4) A stockbroker which is where the teacher analyzes their own teaching and the students learning. 5) A ship captain, which deals with the unpredictable factors and make sure the students ' learning does not veer off course. 6) A red jacket which helps the students experience the connection between the different concepts of mathematics. 7) The
Effective and efficient teachers promote high quality and effective learning. Knowledge, decisions and actions, are the major qualities a teacher should adapt, so as to be a more effective and professional teacher.
