Social Movements and citizen’s involvement are crucial constituents of a democratic government, a government by the people exercised through elected representatives. Social movements are organized efforts that express a constructed social and political identity often having deep roots and long legacies. Social movements regarding equality for black people have existed throughout American history because of the government's failure to protect black people’s right to equality. The social groups tied to these movements react against active oppression to pursue justice. At the present time, one of the most influential social movements is the Black Lives Matter movement, a movement originating from a social media hashtag, that focuses on fundamental …show more content…
Wells’ anti-lynching campaign and the Black Panther Party’s health activism as examples of previous movements that challenged forms of black oppression. Nelson writes “The healing practices of enslaved Africans, for example, challenged a plantation culture concerned with whether their bodies were ‘sound’(p15–35) enough to labor rather than with their whole healthfulness— a paradox of power described by journalist–activist Ida B. Wells as ‘dwarfing the soul and preserv[ing] the body’ (p75)’” (Nelson1734) to show that neglect of black lives is a long existing issue that is already recognized by social activists. Reference to the publication, “The Red Record” by Ida B. Wells is used which included data that exposed how persistent unjust murders of black lives were. Nelson also explains, “Wells’ pioneering data activism also anticipated the Mapping Police Violence research project launched by Black Lives Matter activists that quantifies “police killings”—data about the use (and abuse) of force that neither federal authorities nor most municipalities collect in a systematic way” (Nelson1734), to show how the publication connects to the Black Lives Matter movement. Nelson also refers to the Black Panther Party who worked to confront the suffer and abuse of the African American community , “The Black Panther Party’s work of 5 decades ago laid the groundwork for today’s demands for Black …show more content…
Oppositions to the Black Lives Matter movement may include the use of the “All Lives Matter” phrase because some people think nonblack people are excluded. However, it should be understood that the reason the movement exists is because all lives matter, but there is evidence that shows that, in the criminal justice system, black lives don’t matter as much as white lives. In a study by Cody T. Ross , a professor at University of California, Davis, found “evidence of a significant bias in the killing of unarmed black Americans relative to unarmed white Americans, in that the probability of being black, unarmed, and shot by police is about 3.49 times the probability of being white, unarmed, and shot by police on average.” The results of the study showed that racial biases of police officers are mostly components of relative risk effects as shown in the graphs. Ross also states that “heterogeneity in encounter rates between suspects and police as a function of race could play a strong role in the racial biases in shooting rates presented here,” showing that risk factors that lead to police shootings are contributed by racial
For the past few years, racial tensions have been on the rise. Although many actions have been taken to prevent these conflicts from occurring, African Americans are still being undervalued by the state. As more African Americans are being turned away with little to no assistance from the American government, anger and the desire for change increased among them. When Trayvon Martin’s murderer George Zimmerman was acquitted for his crime, a great number of Americans were furious at the outcome. Three African American women named Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi expressed their view on a Facebook post titled “A Love Note to Black People” and it ends with “Our Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter” (“Black Lives Matter”). Thus, a new liberation movement for black people was born. The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter rapidly spread throughout social media, bringing awareness of the struggles of African Americans. The Black Lives Matter movement is a call to action to eradicate the dehumanization of African Americans that exists in American society. With the constant targeting of African Americans by the police and the unfair treatment in the criminal justice system, the Black Lives Matter movement is a necessity to combat racism.
The United States of America is not doing very well in upholding some of the principles of The Declaration of Independence. You can tell this by looking at some of the protests going on in the united states such as the Black Lives Matter and the NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. The main principle the United States is not upholding well is,“All men are created equal.” The reason I stated this principle is because something you'll notice about some of the protests is that black people are usually the ones who are doing the protesting.
In “The Black Panther Platform: What We Want, What We Believe,” Huey Newton and Bobby Seale use intersectionality and contradiction to criticize several structural obstacles that facilitated unfair treatment of black people. Some of these injustices included inequalities in basic necessities like housing and education, the economic exploitation of black people in a capitalist society, and military, judicial, and police targeting of black people. Hegemonic ideologies had been dictating the lives of black people for centuries, and the Black Panther Party was a revolutionary socialist party founded in 1966 during the Civil Rights Movement that sought to promote the counter-hegemonic movement in favor of civil liberties. The ideologies that the
While there has been tangible progress made in race relations, inequalities still tarnish the country. In poor black communities across the nation, the lack of opportunity stifles potential and creates a cyclical chain of poverty and violence. Areas with high black populations struggling with violence and unequal policing, have prompted a modern civil right movement called “Black Lives Matter.” Critics of the movement often cite, the supposed inherent inequality in the idea. All lives matter, they argue, why should black lives matter specifically? The movement, however, does not argue that black lives matter more than lives of other races, the movement is saying that black lives matter just as much. Furthermore, it’s an exclamation, that calls for attention to be placed on communities ravaged by violence and poverty that are disproportion black. Similar to the movements of the 1960’s, the BLM movement is causing tension across the country. Like king argued, tension is the catalyst that inspires change and conversation. The nonviolent protests of BLM, seek to “dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored;” that is the “work of a nonviolent resister” (1310). Just as the march that was depicted in Selma, the BLM has sought to seek change without violence, but instead with protests and media campaigns. BLM methods parallel King’s use of non violent protest, in a
Looking at the outside article of “Black Panther Party: 1966-1982” by Michael X. Delli Carpini we see that the Black Panther Party did not share the same exact ideals as Dr. King. Although they did advocate strongly for equal rights for black communities they did not have the same patience that Martin Luther King had. The main points of the Black Panther Party movement
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a loosely‐coordinated, nationwide movement dedicated to ending police brutality that rose to prominence in late 2014. It takes its name from a hashtag started by three Black feminist activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi but the movement and the hashtag are not identical (Freelon, McIlwain, & Clark, 2016). BLM has achieved national reputation through their online and offline organizing, obtaining extensive news media coverage and glowing references in music and entertainment television. Based on a horrendous incident that sparked a concern for a lot of Black people across the world, the sudden need for a social movement was born called BLM. Black Lives Matter is a national organization working for the validity of Black life and also working to rebuild the Black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter broadens the conversation and highlight the incidents around state violence to include the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. This referring to the ways in which Black lives are deprived of basic human rights and dignity. According to the article The Murder of Walter Scott, which talks about race and class, “African Americans are less than 13% of the U.S. population yet they are nearly 50% of those killed by the police. North Charleston has a population of 104,000, 47% Black and the police force is 80% white (Miah, 2015)”.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks are, perhaps, the most notable figures of the Civil Rights Movement. However, long before these activists took the stage, “black men and women, acting mostly as individuals but numbering in the thousands, waged guerilla warfare on the infrastructure of Jim Crow” (Litwack, 2009). Since then, numerous civil rights activists emerged to fight against the unjust infrastructure of racism and segregation in the
On a day to day basis African-American individuals are diminished on account of prejudicial biases. Therefore, the movement “Black Lives Matter” has been constructed. It is a network of people working together to rebuild the black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter became a hashtag in the summer of 2013, when Alicia Garza posted a Facebook status called “a love letter to black people.” This status was posted as an assertion for a distressed community over George Zimmerman’s exculpation
In the United States, there has been many cases of Racial injustice. From the beginning of the start of the United States of America it was the injustice to the Native Americans being captured and used for slave labor while their bison be slaughtered for sportsmanship. But this paper is on the specific race of the African Americans. There are many races that have been racially profiled and ostracized by the English people. But the treatment that African Americans have endured even till this day is disheartening. African Americans have gone through enslavement during the early 1600’s to the mid 1800’s. Then the African Americans were obstructed by the Jim Crow laws creating the ‘Separate but Equal” propaganda during the late 1800’s into the 1960’s. After the abolishment of the Jim Crow Laws, people were considered equal until the recent actions of many police officers using deadly force on African American youths in the early 2000’s.
The racial disparities against African Americans lies is shameful, but not surprising. Race matters in the United States. People of color do not receive the same benefits and equality as white people; whether it be in education, the workplace and in the judicial system. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the racial disparities to African Americans in what subsequently led to the Black lives Matter movement. I have chosen a series of photos that capture historical events of protests and movements including an analysis of one of my images.
The black lives matter movement can be deliberated to be a new social movement as it looks at some of the actions which are grounded by policy making and the ideology as the root of collective action. A procedures that fits into this movement is the Collective Behaviour Theory. The theory refers to the events that emerge suddenly and don’t often conform to the laws or rules but as in alternative which is often base on the issues at hand. For instance the Black Lives Matter movement came together as a community as their collective identity matches one another. (Being African American or loosing someone to police violence) This also fits under ‘Grass-roots’ as it is driven by the ‘locals’ who are often
Originating in 2012, the political movement known under the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter has exploded in size and renown. This movement, which was initially inspired after a police officer was acquitted of all charges after fatally shooting an African American individual, seeks to diminish police brutality against African American individuals and systemic racism particularly in the United States. Sweeping the nation, Black Lives Matter has become an international movement and its influence has only increased with time. On the movement’s official website, the following was written regarding the history of the hashtag-inspired entourage, “#BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was posthumously placed on trial for his own murder. Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our dehumanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes.” (http://blacklivesmatter.com/about/). The #BlackLivesMatter movement asserts that racism is still prevalent in modern society and exists not only in passive forms. Instead, racism apparently can be both overt and implicit.
Even though America is the world dominating superpower and is known to intervene on behalf of the violation of human rights internationally, it fails to acknowledge and correct the flaws its legal and justice system present against its own citizens. African Americans have long been targeted by the police force and have been oppressed by the government before, as we are familiar with the Civil Rights Movement that occurred in 1955 due to segregation and discrimination. The system has justified racial profiling, specifically against African Americans, and granted those with authority the right to incarcerate or punish those they deem dangerous. The actions of the American government have given way to the increase incarceration of African Americans and have allowed white privilege to prevail in the justice system. The social movement Black Lives Matter, although recently acknowledged or recognized, is not based on a new issue but rather an old issue that is quickly reviving due to the injustices Black Americans are facing. In short, social movements are known as politics through other means. They occur when people take to the streets in order to have their voices heard by authority and feel as if they are unable to
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
Social movements are vital to the establishment of our societies, and they way we are governed. Social movements help the less privileged band together to create a stronger voice among a sea of political correctness and unlawfully rule that the public supposedly have to abide by without question. Movements create this new form of platform that, if done successfully, are able to create a worldwide frenzy where people from across all walks of life, including politicians, academics, the less fortunate, the homeless, doctors, etc, are able to come together to create change, or to start to create change on a matter that is close to their hearts. One of these matters that has come up in recent years that has been an ongoing battle for centuries upon centuries is Black Lives Matter (Although named various things throughout time such as black civil rights). Black Lives Matter is a movement that started back in 2012 after George Zimmerman was acquitted for his crime against a 17 year old boy named Trayvon Martin, and Trayvon was then put on trial for his own murder (Garza, A. 2014, p. 1.). This crime was just the tipping point for three women who wanted to see a change in the way black lives were/are treated. Black Lives Matter is one of the most important socio-political movements of our time, and this is why it is an important movement to connect with and understand. Throughout, I will be going through the strategies and the tactics Black Lives Matter advocates and cofounders have
