This field requires not only education and skills it also requires specific licensing depending on the region of practice. Most importantly I think the many jobs that fall in the broad area of the human services profession requires a professional who has a passion to help others overcome the many obstacles people are faced with on a daily basis. We do not all have the necessary support to live life to its fullest potential and it is our job to help other members of our communities to conquer these hindrances.
A career in social work or human services is similar in the duties and type of work environment. Both of these positions require a desire to help others in many ways. Human Services Assistants may help clients with special needs obtain the services that will help them to develop and improve their situation. Social workers are considered human services workers, only they typically perform more hands-on duties with clients (BLS, 2012a). A career in social and human services is a rewarding choice for those who have a strong desire to help others in need and who have a strong sense of community.
The human service professionals are usually very compassionate and have a heart to meet the needs of vulnerable people who are unable to be self-sufficient in providing their basic needs. Sometimes barriers caused people to have difficulties in being able to meet their needs. Human service professionals realize that making the world a better place is possible, particularly for those with a passion for meeting the needs of the most vulnerable members of society in a way that reflects empathy, compassion, justice, and respect for human dignity (Martin, 2014, p. 390). Because human service professionals have compassionate, they provide counseling, education, act as a lobbyist and advocate for those who have suffered social injustice. Their
From since I was a young child I have always wanted to go into the field of Human Services. As I have grown I have decided that I would go into the Criminal Justice side of Human Services. By this I mean that I still want to help people, but I want to help people who have become criminals or who are on the path of becoming criminals. I especially want to help children and teens who have been in and out of a Juvenal Detention Center. From this passion I have decided that I want to go into one of three careers. These careers are as follows; Juvenile Defense Attorneys, Juvenile Counselor, or Juvenile Corrections Officer.

Human Services is the practice of assisting needy and less fortunate individuals with meeting their basic needs in life. “The Human Services profession is one which promotes improved service delivery systems by addressing not only the quality of direct services, but also by seeking to improve accessibility, accountability, and coordination among professionals and agencies in service delivery” (Martin, 2007)

Working in Education and Human Service careers means that we will be working with other people, some who might end up seeming rude. I agree with what the doctor said, I cannot assume someone is trying to be rude. As a teacher, I cannot take rude students or parents personally. I especially cannot react like the receptionist Ericka who was crying. I have to remain calm, even when I feel like someone is trying to be hostile or rude. The same situation might happen between future students of mine. Misunderstandings can easily occur between students that are in elementary school. A student might become upset because they believe a classmate was being rude, but the classmate might not have even been trying to come across as rude.
I currently work as an administrator with the Brad H – Social Work Department which is responsible for the appropriate discharge planning of all of the mentally ill men and women housed throughout all New York City Correctional facilities. I have over 20 years of experience working in the Human Services field and the majority of my employment has been working with the mentally ill population. I enjoy working with this population; however, I would be open to working in the medical/health field if the opportunity presented itself. Otherwise, my goals as a social worker are to obtain my LCSW-R and become more marketable and knowledgeable of the various diagnostic symptoms and disorders.
I had conducted an in-person interview with Mr. Steven Brenner, the director of SCO family services St. Christopher Ottilie treatment facility, located at 85-70 148th street, queens, NY. Mr. Brenner who has achieved his Master’s Degree in Social Work embodies all the skills and characteristics that make a human service professional effective. Throughout the 31 years of Mr. Brenner’s career in human services, he has enforced a social and physical environment that promotes good health for all adolescents. He Promotes great quality of life, strength, healthy development, and healthy behaviors for all clients. Mr. Brenner stated, “we take the children that nobody wants”, and with that statement, I was captivated.
I chose social working as my career because many other people go through tough situations and have a difficult time talking to relatives or friends to help them through a tough situation. I thought of becoming a social worker so I can have the ability to change the lives of others. Social work is one of those careers you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. I want to become a social worker because life isn’t about just helping yourself it’s about helping others as well, which is what social workers do for a living. Child and family social workers protect children and families in need of assistance. Many families and children don’t feel comfortable talking to just anyone about obstacles they have faced in their lives which is why
