The short story “Orientation” by Daniel Orozco is exactly what the title suggests. An orientation of the new office job somebody has just received. However, the story delves much deeper into the lives of several employees at this office. Orozco’s employment of somber satire in “Orientation” displays how alienated a community can become in corporate environments. The way in which Orozco structured this story is very effective to the reader as well. When the narrator begins to spill the secrets and quirks of each person in the office but insists the newcomer ignore them, he is advocating isolation that is …show more content…

And all these personal secrets and information on one another is juxtaposed with explanations of places and objects in the office such as Mr. Coffee and the weekly coffee pools, as well as the supply cabinet. All this creates a very strange mix of detachment and affection. A prime example of this is illustrated when the narrator tells the new person the office is haunted by Barry Hacker’s dead wife and ends it with “We have four Barrys in this office. Isn’t that a coincidence?” The result is hilarious and quite
After reading this excerpt from “Under the Feet of Jesus”, the reader can better understand how a protagonist’s character can develop throughout a text. At first, Estrella’s character can be described as immature and curious. However, towards the end of the text, Estrella’s character can be described as humble and understanding. Continuing a haphazard conversation, like in a public place when we hear two people having an intimate conversation, we eventually have to walk away because we do not know what they are actually talking about, similarly, following the exact writing style and giving a tone of privacy, the writer has created a similar tone to the whole aspect of the story, making the reader to figure out what actually the two couple are talking about.
In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, the author presents the reader with recurring mysterious images and characters. In visual art, repetition of colors, shapes and textures is used to create unity, emphasis and rhythm. Because Diaz is painting his story with words he is using the literary device of repetition for the same reasons, for emphasis, to create a rhythm and to tie the account together. The narrative of Oscar and the Cabral and De Leon families and friends moves back and forth in time and the repetition of images with slight variations is a powerful way of maintaining and connecting the story line or theme in what may seem like a jumble of events. The “man with no face” and “paginas en blanco” , ‘blank pages’ or missing words are just a few of the recurring symbols used to connect past, present and further and to emphasize the predictable yet random feelings and consequences of 'Fuku'. By looking more closely at how and why these symbols were used, the major theme represented in the story of Oscar’s wonderful life, becomes apparent.

In Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief investment, one of the three major elements of narrative tension is most prominent. For example, how Markus introduces his characters throughout the story. He describes them in a way that you cannot help but want to learn more about them and what their stories are. Markus writes, “Some facts about Hans Hubermann he loved to smoke. The main thing he loved about smoking was the rolling. He was a painter by trade and played the piano accordion. This came in handy, especially in winter, when he could make a little money playing in the pubs of Molching, like the Knoller He had already cheated me in one world war but would later be put into another, where he would somehow avoid me again.” (Zusak 33-34) This shows
“Orientation”- This story is told in 2nd Person POV, and this makes it feel as if you are being spoken directly to about your new job. In the end, when it is revealed, “Kevin Howard sits in that cubicle over there. He is a serial killer” (488), it feels more shocking, more absurd and scary than it would if the reader were more distanced from the story. It was an excellent choice by the author.
