Runner by Carl Deuker is a book written to describe the life of a boy named Chance Taylor and his dad. Chance is close to starvation and homelessness. He worries about paying the bills, having enough food to eat, and keeping his home, a small boat named the Tiny Dancer. While out on his usual run around the marina and beach, a man asks him if he would like a job. The man says all he has to do is run. Chance will have to pick up a package along the beach each day. The package will be hidden in the recesses of a rock buried at the foot of a maple tree. He then has to leave it in a locker. The man says the job pays a lot of money. Even though he suspects that he is smuggling drugs, he always completes the job and now has extra money in his pocket to spend at the café

Runner is a novel about Charlie Feehan written by Robert Newton. This semi-nonfictional novel brings Charlie on a wild adventure into uncharted territories. It is set in the streets of Richmond, Melbourne in 1919. Charlie is a young adult who lives in a damp and mouldy house with his Ma and his baby brother, Jack. Charlie has to make a living so he quits schools and sets out find the dirtiest job he can get his hands on. Through himself and other close individuals, Charlie is able to further build his experiences using the lessons he’s learnt. Charlie learns some of these lessons and experiences from close friends as they circle around Charlie being close to him and teaching him things just by being by his side. Squizzy Taylor and the Ballarat mile are some other very influential points as well.

Grillo faced many things throughout his life to become the person he is now. Either good or bad all the changes he went through made a big impact in his life. Within the novel Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez, the main character Grillo changes throughout the story when he uses drugs, friends influence him and family problems are encountered.

He takes the opportunity for the money and goes through many adventures throughout this book, such as meeting a girl named Melissa, who lives the opposite life of his, privileged and nice.

In Always Running, is the memoir of Luis Rodriguez battles an external conflict of having to be threatened by the police because he is involved in a gang. Luis ultimately resolves this conflict by making a huge change and leaving the gang and going back school and becoming an activist person; however, this choice also illustrates his true character as a motivation person. Luis’s decision to stay motivated also reveals the universal theme because it’s never too late to make a change in life and also fight for what is right.

Growing up as a young black male has many struggles. M.K. Asante’s Buck is an eye opener to the real world of life growing up as a young black male. Malo is the main character in this book. His older brother, Uzi, is in an out of trouble constantly, mother has mental issues and his dad isn’t really supportive of them.as in their family struggles. Malo feels that he is forced to be independent but his mother doesn’t fully agree with some of the decisions that he makes. With his family falling apart, Malo feels that he has to fight for himself to survive in this world.

The school board is not quite certain that schools should continue to include fiction in the curriculum. However, if fiction is taught to students it may actually teach life lessons. Fictional literature can change someone's perspective on, what problems we may come across. For instance, a fictional book can help us relate to all the controversial problems that do occur in today's society. I disagree with the school board's thoughts about completely banning it. This type of literature can deepen our knowledge and teach us about things that we don’t experience on a day to day basis.

This process is called "coming of age". The idea is that adolescents shed their childhood mindset and take on adult responsibilities. In The First Part Last, the protagonist, Bobby, is faced with the responsibility of having a child of his own, and he begins the coming of age process. By the end of the novel, it is obvious that Bobby has successfully come of age, based on the symbols and events that are show throughout the novel.

Various novels can be classified as “coming-of-age” texts, this means that these are stories about a protagonist’s transition from childhood to adulthood or just growing up even as an adult. These novels show their growth and change in character over the length of the text. Novels such as The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston are all examples of coming-of-age novels. In Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God the story is focused on Janie Crawford and her growth over the course of the book.

He has reached a point in his life where he is expected to follow many more rules and essentially 'how to be a proper responsible adult' guidelines. Instead of being curious about his growth and the developing relationships around him, he convinces himself that the adult world is entirely dishonest and uninteresting. He also calls adults phony.

Coming of age is a recurring theme that is universally known throughout many different pieces of literature. Whether it’s influenced on true experiences, childhood memories, or even based on one’s current juvenile reality, many of theses works have a correlation between them that include many similar ordeals and struggles that the character goes through in order to metamorphosize into taking their first step out of childhood. One prominent theme that often appears is how one experiences and faces a time of tribulation and other walls that stand in one’s path. In effect, hardships mature and enlighten one, causing the loss of something such as childhood innocence. Lastly, these three combined points finally lead to one’s metamorphosis out of childhood. All in all, these three factors take one out of childhood, and slowly allows one step out into the reality of this world.

Coming of age is an influential part of many people’s lives. They begin to leave behind their innocent childhood views and develop a more realistic view on the world around them as they step forward into adulthood. (Need to add transition) Many authors have a coming of age theme in their books; specifically, Harper Lee portrays a coming of age theme in his book To Kill A Mockingbird. Through the journeys of their childhoods, Jem and Scout lose their innocence while experiencing their coming of age moment, making them realize how unfair Maycomb really is.

As he grows older, his style changes and he sees the real world as it really is as opposed to his fantasies he had when he was younger. A major development in the story is the actual act of becoming a man. Boys his age have a festival for many days that lead up to their circumcision, after which they become men. After this accomplishment, he still writes about his fears and his thoughts but he is much more wary to keep them to himself. And as he grows even older he moves away from home to attend Technical College for four years. These years change him very much and when he returns home he is much more of an adult and conducts himself in such a manner.
