Runner by Carl Deuker is a book written to describe the life of a boy named Chance Taylor and his dad. Chance is close to starvation and homelessness. He worries about paying the bills, having enough food to eat, and keeping his home, a small boat named the Tiny Dancer. While out on his usual run around the marina and beach, a man asks him if he would like a job. The man says all he has to do is run. Chance will have to pick up a package along the beach each day. The package will be hidden in the recesses of a rock buried at the foot of a maple tree. He then has to leave it in a locker. The man says the job pays a lot of money. Chance tells her he has nothing to write about and then Melissa says that she has seen him peeking around the rocks. To keep his cover, he tells her a lie. Melissa starts spying on him and he begins to worry. Later the man who gave him the job finds him and tells him to keep his friend out of this or she will be in serious trouble. Chance goes to the café to tell Melissa that she needs to stop spying on him and she decides to listen. On one of his later runs he is told that new packages are going to start coming and he is going to have to hide them on the boat. When he gets the first package he becomes very suspicious. He decides to go to the library and research what it could be. He thinks it could be plastic explosives, but he brushes it off. Chance talks to the man who gave him the job and he says the packages are gems. A few days later the man is killed in an accident. The police believe it’s a suicide, but Chance suspects a murder. He thinks the people running this business decided to kill the man because the people didn’t need him anymore. Chance gets nervous and can’t wait until the people come to pick up the
