Chapter 3 of Cathleen Cahill’s book, Federal Fathers and Mothers: A Social History of the United States Indian Service, 1869-1933, titled “Members of an Amazonian Corps, White Women in the Indian Service”, argues that the Indian Service worked as a maternalist agency due to the high numbers of white women it employed. The Indian Service, later renamed to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), had the most white women employees of any federal agency. Cahill writes, “... by 1925, for example, the Indian Service counted more than 1,000 women among its personnel, while the Children’s Bureau employed only 120 women and the Women’s Bureau a mere 45.” (page 65). The women hired by the Indian Services would be the ones implementing maternalistic assimilation policy across Indian Country in the early 20th century.

All of the preceding events rose many eyebrows in Washington DC, especially among the elite politician’s wives. Floride Calhoun, wife of Vice President John Calhoun, accepted a social call from the Eatons after their marriage, but refused to pay a return visit. This was viewed in Washington DC as a snub. Jackson’s advisors encouraged him not to appoint Eaton into his cabinet, saying that his reputation would damage Jackson’s chances for the Presidency. This only angered Jackson, who recalled the earlier mistreatment of his wife, Rachel, during his first run for the presidency. There had been a misunderstanding about her previous divorce, and it turned out that she and Jackson had not been married when they had thought, since her divorce was not yet final. They had in fact, been living quite publicly in sin for over two years. They quickly repeated their vows, but the political and personal repercussions had already taken effect. Rachel died of a heart attack less than three months before Jackson’s inauguration, and Jackson always blamed his competing party for her death.
Josh Duggar of 19 Kids and Counting lost a lot of fans when his scandal came to light. Now an older picture of Josh with Ted Cruz is being shared and honestly it could put a negative light on Ted's campaign. Starcasm shared about this picture of Josh and Ted and what it could end up meaning. It really does look like Ted could end up being pick for president at a contested Republican.
A democratic society was on the rise and many Americans believed in equality but ignored enslaved African Americans. Government moved out of the houses of rich men and into the houses of the middle and lower- classes; education improved, suffrage laws were enacted, and newspapers were increasingly circulated. The political parties greatly changed; third parties began to rise, four candidates were chosen for one party, and Andrew Jackson lost his first election to John Adams. Adams lost his reelection to Jackson; both of whom created smear campaigns for each other, this improved voter turnout. Jackson represented the common man, throughout his presidency he served
Judie Randall put her daughter, Michele Song, up for adoption in hopes of giving her a better life with another family. Michele Song 's files were sealed by the law, and at the age of 31, after 13 years of petitioning, a social worker was allowed to give non-identifying information about her birth mother and father. Eventually the social worker allowed Song to write a letter in the hopes she could get it to her. Michele Song waited for her daughters birth to contact her birth mother in the hopes of meeting her (Carroll 355). This essay was successful because of her style, her use of figurative language, and her content.
The petticoat affair was between a widowed woman, whose husband died in the marines, then married her dead husbands boss Secretary of War John Henry Eaton. Jackson felt so strongly about this situation because his wife dealt with similar issues with the press, that this widowed woman was currently having.
Before Andrew Jackson was in office, one of his close friends and who was Secretary of War, John Eaton, married Margaret Timberlake. Washington’s socialites actually disapproved of her because of her questionable background and rumors of her past. When the wives of the other cabinet members would not even want to be around her or have anything to do with Mrs. Eaton, Jackson was forced to defend his friend’s wife, and with John Eaton having defended Rachel Jackson during the 1828 campaign. He made a demand for Mrs. Eaton to be accepted into Washington’s social circles. This later on became known as the Eaton Affair.
The American Psychological Institute states that the current divorce rate is around forty to fifty percent for first marriages and even higher for second and third marriages. The upward trend of divorce rates in America has many Americans concerned about the decreasing emphasis on commitment and family values that often results from divorce. In Zora Neale Hurstons’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, the protagonist, Janie, experiences three marriages, one of which ends in divorce and the other two in death. Many readers may question the values of Janie and her seemingly ‘gold- digger’ Nanny as they both seem to be chasing the unattainable, a perfect marriage with a rich husband. As the novel plays out, the reader goes deeper into Nanny and Janie’s values and how they affect Janie’s three marriages. In the article “The Death of Janie Crawford: Tragedy and the American Dream in Their Eyes Were Watching God,” Darryl Hattenhauer correctly identifies Nanny as someone who would want Janie to follow her dreams in Zora Neale Hurston 's Their Eyes Were Watching God; meanwhile, Hattenhauer incorrectly believes that Nanny would not want Janie to marry Jody.

Women throughout the course of history have played numerous roles in society. During the Jacksonian Era, America as a whole was undergoing various changes. Political changes allowed the “common man” to have a say in government. While the women still lacked the right to vote and be involved in politics by law, they certainly made their presence known. Women were able to influence government through their unwritten social laws. The Petticoat Affair describes perfectly how women made powerful political statements without even having a woman in office.
Coming into the presidency Jackson had some issues. The cabinet that he had chosen did not work well together. There was vicious gossip circulating about one of the cabinet members and his wife. It came out that the person spreading these rumors was Jackson’s very own vice president. This incident was later called the Eaton affair. In response to Calhoun’s actions against a fellow cabinet member, Jackson decided to
